  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of parents' repeated reading of the same storybook on young children's independent reading. The subjects were forty five- and six-year-old children and their parents. The children attended four preschools and kindergartens in three cities, Ann Arbor, Northville, and Jackson, Michigan, U.S.A. The family SES varied. Observation of parent-child verbal interaction during storybook reading was carried out in a naturalistic way. The storybook used for this study was The Berenstain Bears visit the dentist(Berenstain & Berenstain, 1981). The parents were asked to read the stroybook aloud to the target child, as they usually did, four times within 2 weeks, but to audiotape the first and fourth reading. The paired t-test was employed to test for the difference in the frequency of the child's taking over of storybook reading between the fir-st and fourth reading. The results showed that children took over storybook reading more frequently in the fourth reading than in the first reading, irrespective of the family SES. Implications for future research in the area of storybook reading were discussed.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop an Empowerment Education Program (EEP) for kidney transplant patients and to test the program's effects on uncertainty, self-care ability, and compliance. Methods: The research was conducted using a nonequivalent control group with a pretest-posttest design. The participants were 53 outpatients (experimental group: 25, control group: 28) who were receiving hospital treatment after kidney transplants. After the pre-test, patients in the experimental group underwent a weekly EEP for six weeks. The post-test was conducted immediately after, and four weeks after the program's completion in the same manner as the pre-test. For the control group, we conducted a post-test six and ten weeks after the pre-test, without and program intervention. A repeated measure ANOVA was performed to compare the change scores on main outcomes. Results: Uncertainty was significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group, both immediately after (t=-3.84, p=<.001) and 4 weeks after (t=-4.51 p=<.001) the program, whereas self-care ability (t=5.81, p=<.001), (t=5.84, p=<.001) and compliance (t=5.07, p=<.001), (t=5.45, p=<.001) were significantly higher. Conclusion: Kidney transplant patients who underwent an EEP showed a decrease in uncertainty and an improvement in self-care ability and compliance. Thus, our findings confirmed that an EEP can be an independent intervention method for improving and maintaining the health of kidney transplant patients.

  • In this experimental study, it is concerned to develop a simple equation using jar-test results in order to predict the optimum dosage of coagulant, PAC(polyaluminum chloride). Considering the relationships with the reactions of coagulation and flocculation, the four independent variables (e.g. turbidity, temperature, pH and alkalinity) are selected out of many parameters and they are put into calculations to develop an equation by means of multi-regression method. As the result, the dosing rate of PAC is proportional to turbidity, pH and alkalinity, but in inverse to temperature. And the developed equation is as follow, $$D_c=\frac{3.2{\cdot}T^{0.37}{\cdot}A^{0.04}{\cdot}P^{0.5}}{t^{0.1}},\;(R^2=0.9443)$$ And also, comparing between the estimated value from the equation and the real dosing rate in the plant, Kwangam and Tdukdo, during 1988~1991, it is represented an agreement having a relative error of 16.4%, 17.8%, respectively.
