Purpose: Accurate monitoring of soil strength is a key technology applicable to various precision agricultural practices. Soil strength has been traditionally measured using a cone penetrometer, which is time-consuming and expensive, making it difficult to obtain the spatial data required for precision agriculture. To improve the current, inefficient method of measuring soil strength, our objective was to develop and evaluate an in-situ system that could measure horizontal soil strength in real-time, while moving across a soil bin. Methods: Multiple cone-shape penetrometers were horizontally assembled at the front of a vertical plow blade at intervals of 5 cm. Each penetrometer was directly connected to a load cell, which measured loads of 0-2.54 kN. In order to process the digital signals from every individual transducer concurrently, a microcontroller was embedded into the measurement system. Wireless data communication was used between a data storage device and this real-time horizontal soil strength (RHSS) measurement system travelling at 0.5 m/s through an indoor experimental soil bin. The horizontal soil strength index (HSSI) measured by the developed system was compared with the cone index (CI) measured by a traditional cone penetrometer. Results: The coefficient of determination between the CI and the HSSI at depths of 5 cm and 10 cm ($r^2=0.67$ and 0.88, respectively) were relatively less than those measured below 20 cm ($r^2{\geq}0.93$). Additionally, the measured HSSIs were typically greater than the CIs for a given numbers of compactor operations. For an all-depth regression, the coefficient of determination was 0.94, with a RMSE of 0.23. Conclusions: A HSSI measurement system was evaluated in comparison with the conventional soil strength measurement system, CI. Further study is needed, in the form of field tests, on this real-time measurement and control system, which would be applied to precision agriculture.

We present a processing system for the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) sounding suite onboard Aqua satellite. With its unprecedented 2378 channels in IR bands, AIRS aims at achieving the sounding accuracy of radiosonde (1 K in 1-km layer for temperature and $10\%$ in 2-km layer for humidity). The core of the processor is the International MODIS/AIRS Processing Package (IMAPP) that performs the geometric and radiometric correction for generation of Level 1 brightness temperature and Level 2 geophysical parameters retrieval. The processor can produce automatically from received raw data to Level 2 geophysical parameters. As we process the direct-broadcast data almost for the first time among the AIRS direct-broadcast community, a special attention is paid to understand and verify the Level 2 products. This processor includes sub-systems, that is, the near real time validation system which made the comparison results with in-situ measurement data, and standard digital information system which carry out the data format conversion into GRIdded Binary II (GRIB II) standard format to promote active data communication between meteorological societies. This processing system is planned to encourage the application of geophysical parameters observed by AIRS to research the aqua cycle in the Korean peninsula.
A new ex-situ model to diagnose a plasma processing equipment was presented. The model was constructed by combining wavelet, scanning electron microscope, ex-situ measurement of etching profile, and neural network. The diagnosis technique was applied to a tungsten etching process, conducted in a $SF_6$ helicon plasma. The wavelet was used to characterize detailed variations of plasma-etched surface. The diagnosis model was constructed with the vertical wavelet component. For comparison, a conventional model was built by using the estimated profile data. Compared to the conventional model, the wavelet-based model, demonstrated a much improved diagnosis.
As in Korean environments with mountainous and hilly areas, the rock generally has to be removed in construction or civil engineering work in tunnelling or excavation for development in urban area. Explosives should be used for blasting, which may cause serious problems on local people for their claim for compensation due to ground vibration, noise. For safe and economic blasting, geology and engineering characteristics of rocks such as discontinuities of rock or weathering are very important factors, together with site characteristics for prediction of ground vibration. In this study, conducted were the detailed study for major rocks most widely distributed in the South-east area, in-situ geological survey, geological and geochemical analysis, and further laboratory uniaxial rock stress, seismic velocity of core samples together with in-situ seismic velocity measurements. Regulations on ground vibration and noise were reviewed for assessing their adaptabilities, and a total of 4,856 measured blasting vibration data were examined for enhancing the confidence level in estimating the predictive formulation using scaled distance statistically.

The most widely accepted method for understanding the deformation mechanism of rock is from the use of computer simulation. However, if the changes in rock properties after excavation are significant this will prevent the computer simulation kent predicting the deformation with acceptable accuracy. If the deformations are, however, carefully measured in situ, the resulting data can be more useful far predicting the deformational behavior of underground openings, since the effect of the parameters which influence the deformational behavior are included in the measurement. In this study, extensive data analyses were carried out using the deformation measurements from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), which is a permanent nuclear waste repository The results from computer simulations were compared with field measurements to evaluate the assumptions used in the computer simulations, For better description of the deformational behavior around underground excavations, several techniques were developed, namely: (a) the calculation of the zero strain boundary; (b) the evaluation of the influence of adjacent excavations on the deformational behavior of pre-excavated openings; (c) the description of the deformational behavior using in situ measurements; (d) the calculation of the shear stress distribution; and (e) the application of a Neural Network for the prediction of opening deformation.
Electrical impedance spectroscopy is used to detect membrane fouling in-situ in reverse electrodialysis. The impedance data for the AMX membrane being fouled in the reverse electrodialysis are plotted and analyzed by Nyquist and admittance method. The meaningful graphical analyses for the fouling phenomena could be done by both Nyquist and admittance method. In addition, the unstable initial fouling stage was identified by the admittance data with high standard deviation, and the structural change of the fouling layer formed at the surface of anion-exchange membranes with the operation time of reverse electrodialysis was also detected.
Chlorophyll-a concentration maps of Yongdam reservoir in September and October, 2001 were produced using Landsat ETM imagery and the in-situ water quality measurement data. In-situ water samples were collected on 16th September and 18th October during the satellite overpass. The correlations between the DN values of the imagery and the values of chlorophyll-a concentration were analyzed. The visible bands(band 1, 2, 3) and the near infrared band(band 4) data of September image showed the correlation coefficient values higher than 0.9. The October image showed correlation coefficient values of about 0.7 due to the low variations of chlorophyll-a concentration. Regression models between the DN values of the Landsat ETM image and the chlorophyll-a concentration have been developed for each image. The developed regression models were then applied to each image, and finally the chlorophyll-a distribution maps of Yongdam reservoir were produced. The produced maps showed the spatial distribution of the chlorophyll-a in Yongdam reservoir in a synoptic way so that the tropic state could be easily monitored and analysed in the spatial domain.

Gas piping systems in power plants and factories are always influenced by the mechanical vibrations of rotational machines such as pumps, blowers, and compressors. Unusual vibrations in a gas piping system influence possible leakages of liquids or gases, which can lead to large explosive accidents. Real-time measurements of unusual vibrations in piping systems in situ prohibit them from being possible leakages owing to the repeated fatigue of vibrations. In this paper, a non-contact 3-dimensional measurement system that can detect the vibrations of a solid body and monitor its vibrational modes is introduced. To detect the displacements of a body, a stereoscopic camera system is used, through which the major vibration types of solid bodies (such as X-axis-major, Y-axis-major, and Z-axis-major vibrations) can be monitored. In order to judge the vibration types, an artificial neural network is used. The measurement system consists of a host computer, stereoscopic camera system (two-camera system, high-speed high-resolution camera), and a measurement target. Through practical application on a flat plate, the measured data from the non-contact measurement system showed good agreement with those from the original vibration mode produced by an accelerator.

Efficient management of deteriorating civil infrastructure is one of the most important research topics in many developed countries. In particular, the remote displacement measurement of bridges using linear variable differential transformers, global positioning systems, laser Doppler vibrometers, and computer vision technologies has been attempted extensively. This paper proposes a remote displacement measurement system using closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) and a computer-vision-based method for in-situ bridge bearings having relatively large displacement due to temperature change in long term. The hardware of the system is composed of a reference target for displacement measurement, a CCTV to capture target images, a gateway to transmit images via a mobile network, and a central server to store and process transmitted images. The usage of CCTV capable of night vision capture and wireless data communication enable long-term 24-hour monitoring on wide range of bridge area. The computer vision algorithm to estimate displacement from the images involves image preprocessing for enhancing the circular features of the target, circular Hough transformation for detecting circles on the target in the whole field-of-view (FOV), and homography transformation for converting the movement of the target in the images into an actual expansion displacement. The simple target design and robust circle detection algorithm help to measure displacement using target images where the targets are far apart from each other. The proposed system is installed at the Tancheon Overpass located in Seoul, and field experiments are performed to evaluate the accuracy of circle detection and displacement measurements. The circle detection accuracy is evaluated using 28,542 images captured from 71 CCTVs installed at the testbed, and only 48 images (0.168%) fail to detect the circles on the target because of subpar imaging conditions. The accuracy of displacement measurement is evaluated using images captured for 17 days from three CCTVs; the average and root-mean-square errors are 0.10 and 0.131 mm, respectively, compared with a similar displacement measurement. The long-term operation of the system, as evaluated using 8-month data, shows high accuracy and stability of the proposed system.

A 3-dimensional stress measurement system based on the bore hole bottom deformation method, which is one of the stress relief methods, was developed. A pilot bore hole is drilled from the bottom of a bore hole and the stress meter is inserted into the pilot bore hole in the method. The bore hole is advanced as an over coring and the deformations in seven directions are measured by cantilever type-sensors. Using the cantilever type-sensors saves time for hardening of glue. No cable connection between the stress meter and a data logger is necessary since a compact data logger is installed in the stress meter. The accuracy of the stress meter was confirmed by a biaxial test for a Shikotsu welded tuff block although in-situ tests have not been carried out yet.
