  • Recently the application of geophysical well logging to geotechnical site investigation is increasing, because the merit that geophysical logs provide the high resolution and in-situ physical properties in volumes of rock surrounding the borehole. Geophysical well logs are used to identify lithologic boundaries and fracture, to determine the physical properties of rock(i.e., density, velocity etc.), and to detect permeable fracture zones that could be conduits for ground water movement through the rocks. The principle of heat-pulse meter, the calibration of gamma-gamma logging, and principles and data processing of full waveform sonic logging are briefly reviewed, and the case studies of geophysical logs are discussed. Correlation between velocity by sonic logging and rock mass classification such as RMR(Rock Mass Rating) value is considered.

  • Purpose: We estimated the dietary qualities of green soybean (edamame) by using a specialized NIR transmission spectrometer to determine the constitutive properties of the soybean, such as the sucrose content and ninhydrine reaction quantity (NRQ; defined by the ninhydrine reaction, which has a high positive correlation with the total free amino acids), with the purpose of establishing a quality assurance system. Methods: We used a newly developed spectrometer probe that enables in situ estimation of the constituents of the soybean. Results: The calibration results obtained using a wavelength range of 760-960 nm were characterized by $R^2$ = 0.57 and standard error of cross-validation (SECV) of 0.78% for sucrose, and $R^2$ = 0.59 and SECV = 0.35% for NRQ. Conclusions: These results are inferior to those of our previous study obtained using a specialized bench-type transmission spectrometer. The poorer results are attributed to several possible reasons, including the effect of direct sunlight and the unstable sample presentation. We plan to conduct further study using improved optical layout and sample presentation.

  • An in-situ probe-based spectrophotometer has been developed. This system used two spectrometers to measure soil reflectance spectra from 450 nm to 2200 nm. It collects soil electrical conductivity (EC) and insertion force measurements in addition to the optical data. Six fields in Kansas were mapped with the VIS-NIR (visible-near infrared) probe module and sampled for calibration and validation. Results showed that VIS-NIR correlated well with carbon in all six fields, with RPD (the ratio of standard deviation to root mean square error of prediction) of 1.8 or better, RMSE of 0.14 to 0.22%, and $R^2$ of 0.69 to 0.89. From the investigation of carbon variability within the soil profile and by tillage practice, the 0-5 cm depth in a no-till field contained significantly higher levels of carbon than any other locations. Using the selected calibration model with the soil NIR probe data, a soil profile map of estimated carbon was produced, and it was found that estimated carbon values are highly correlated to the lab values. The array of sensors (VIS-NIR, electrical conductivity, insertion force) used in the probe allowed estimating bulk density, and three of the six fields were satisfactory. The VIS-NIR probe also showed the obtained spectra data were well correlated with nitrogen for all fields with RPD scores of 1.84 or better and coefficient of determination ($R^2$) of 0.7 or higher.

  • As the wafer geometric requirements continuously complicated and minutes in tens of nanometers, the expectation of real-time add-on sensors for in-situ plasma process monitoring is rapidly increasing. Various industry applications, utilizing plasma impedance monitor (PIM) and optical emission spectroscopy (OES), on etch end point detection, etch chemistry investigation, health monitoring, fault detection and classification, and advanced process control are good examples. However, process monitoring in semiconductor manufacturing industry requires non-invasiveness. The hypothesis behind the optical monitoring of plasma induced ion current is for the monitoring of plasma induced charging damage in non-invasive optical way. In plasma dielectric via etching, the bombardment of reactive ions on exposed conductor patterns may induce electrical current. Induced electrical charge can further flow down to device level, and accumulated charges in the consecutive plasma processes during back-end metallization can create plasma induced charging damage to shift the threshold voltage of device. As a preliminary research for the hypothesis, we performed two phases experiment to measure the plasma induced current in etch environmental condition. We fabricated electrical test circuits to convert induced current to flickering frequency of LED output, and the flickering frequency was measured by high speed optical plasma monitoring system (OPMS) in 10 kHz. Current-frequency calibration was done in offline by applying stepwise current increase while LED flickering was measured. Once the performance of the test circuits was evaluated, a metal pad for collecting ion bombardment during plasma etch condition was placed inside etch chamber, and the LED output frequency was measured in real-time. It was successful to acquire high speed optical emission data acquisition in 10 kHz. Offline measurement with the test circuitry was satisfactory, and we are continuously investigating the potential of real-time in-situ plasma induce current measurement via OPMS.

  • Pressuremeter test estimates deformational properties of soil from the relationship between applied pressure and the displacement of cavity wall, and the results reflect the in-situ stress condition and the structure of soil particles. This study suggests the overall process of test and analysis for the evaluation of nonlinear degradation characteristics of shear moduli, based on the reloading curve of pressuremeter test. The method estimates the maximum shear modulus, taking into account the difference between the stress states around the probe in reloading and that of the in-situ state, and then combines the degradation characteristics of shear moduli taken from reloading curve. This procedure derives the shear moduli in overall strain range. Pressuremeter tests were carried out in various ground conditions using large calibration chamber, together with various reference tests. Shear moduli taken from pressuremeter tests were compared with bender element test and resonant column test results.

  • This paper presents an in-situ correction method to compensate for the position error of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) near the sea floor. AUVs generally have an inertial navigation system assisted with auxiliary navigational sensors. Since the inertial navigation system shows drift in position without the bottom reflection of a Doppler velocity log, external acoustic positioning systems, such as an ultra short baseline (USBL), are needed to set the position without surfacing the AUV. The main concept of the correction method is as follows: when the AUV arrives near the sea floor, the vehicle moves around horizontally in a circular mode, while the USBL transceiver installed on a surface vessel measures the AUV's position. After acquiring one data set, a least-square curve fitting method is adopted to find the center of the AUV's circular motion, which is transferred to the AUV via an acoustic telemetry modem (ATM). The proposed method is robust for the outlier of USBL, and it is independent of the time delay for the data transfer of the USBL position with the ATM. The proposed method also reduces the intrinsic position error of the USBL, and is applicable to the in-situ calibration as well as the initialization of the AUVs' position. Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to verify the effectiveness of the method.

  • Vibrations induced by traffic loading and construction activities are extremely important due to their potential to cause damage to adjacent structures and toy complaints to the neighbors. Vibration induced damage to the built environment may be caused by the direct transmission of vibrations as well as by the, vibration induced differential settlement. In order to effectively control the vibration related problems, the accurate in-situ vibration monitoring is essential. In this paper, a calibration technique of a geophone which is widely used in practice was described. Once the frequency characteristics of individual geophones were calibrated, the 3fomponent geophone was developed for the in-depth vibration measurement, and the dot ailed calibration and application techniques of the 3fomponent geophone were described. Vibrations caused by blasting, train loading, and pile driving were measured and the applicability of the 3fomponent geophone was assessed.

  • The three-dimensional failure criterion is essential for maintaining wellbore stability and sand production problem. The convenient factor for a stable wellbore is mud weight and borehole orientation, i.e., mud window design and selection of borehole trajectory. This study proposes a new three-dimensional failure criterion with linear relation of three in-situ principal stresses. The number of failure criteria executed to understand the phenomenon of rock failure under in-situ stresses is the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, Hoek-Brown criterion, Mogi-Coulomb criterion, and many more. A new failure criterion is the extended Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion with the influence of intermediate principal stress (σ2). The influence of intermediate principal stress is considered as a weighting of (σ2) on the mean effective stress. The triaxial compression test data for eleven rock types are taken from the literature for calibration of material constant and validation of failure prediction. The predictions on rock samples using new criteria are the best fit with the triaxial compression test data points. Here, Drucker-Prager and the Mogi-Coulomb criterion are also implemented to predict the failure for eleven different rock types. It has been observed that the Drucker-Prager criterion gave over prediction of rock failure. On the contrary, the Mogi-Coulomb criterion gave an equally good prediction of rock failure as our proposed new 3D failure criterion. Based on the yield surface of a new 3D linear criterion it gave the safest prediction for the failure of the rock. A new linear failure criterion is recommended for the unique solution as a linear relation of the principal stresses rather than the dual solution by the Mogi-Coulomb criterion.

  • The chlorophyll-a concentration measured by OCTS could be used for observing the physical phenomena such as eddies, fronts, and up welling in the oceans as well as for studying the ecology of phytoplankton. In this study, biological and physical features in the East Sea/Japan Sea (the East Sea) and the Yellow Sea observed by OCTS are analyzed in comparison with other satellite data. And in situ chlorophyll data were compared with OCTS Level 2 chlorophyll data. There was a striking correspondence between the satellite chlorophyll structure and other satellite data in the East Sea in the spring. Very complicated ring structures in the 557 are reflected in chlorophyll structure. In the Yellow Sea, the surface structure was rather simple. While the discrepancies between in situ and OCTS algorithm version 3 chlorophyll were small in the East Sea, those for the Yellow Sea were rather big. Comparison with CZCS data for similar time of the year (May-June) shows that OCTS chlorophyll is higher in general. Although the error is partly due to the fact that NASDA chlorophyll algorithm is an empirical algorithm for case 1 water, how much of this error is also due to the errors in sensor calibration or in atmospheric correction is not clear.

  • Our nation's water resources remain susceptible to contamination by phenolic agrichemicals. These compounds can be toxic to a variety of organisms including humans. Their disposal is restricted in many countries with strict limits for acceptable concentrations in drinking water. Enzyme-mediated in situ stabilization has been advocated as an approach for the treatment of phenolic compounds in soils and groundwater. This study reports the development of a new approach to quantify the activity of the HRP enzyme in aqueous systems. The method is based on the coupled processes of energy transfer and enhanced chemiluminescence using a luminol-$H_2O_2$-HRP system. In this study, the effects of solution pH, ionic strength and aqueous concentrations of HRP, $H_2O_2$ and enhancer were evaluated on the p-iodophenol-enhanced, HRP-catalyzed chemiluminescence reaction intensity in Tris-HCl buffer. All assay components were found to affect the maximum chemiluminescene intensity. The calibration curve for HRP showed the linear relationship with maximum light intensity.
