Characteristic of the Class Library for Embedded Java System (내장형 자바 시스템을 위한 클래스 라이브러리의 특성)

  • Class library is one of the most crucial element of Java runtime environment in addition to Java virtual machine. In particular, embedded Java system depends heavily on the class library due to having a low bandwidth communication link and a small amount of memory which are a common restriction of embedded system. It is therefore quite necessary to find the characteristic of the class library for embedded Java system to build an efficient Java runtime environment. In this paper we have analyzed the characteristic of the class library for embedded system. The analysis includes sorts of classes in the library, typical size of the file which contains the class, and the composition of constant pool which is a major part of the file. We also have found typical number of field and method a class contains, the sizes of stack and local variable array each method requires, and the length of bytecode in the method. The result of this study can be used to estimate the startup time for class loading and the size of memory to create an instance of class which are a mandatory information to design an efficient embedded Java virtual machine.

Index management technique using Small block in storage device based on NAND flash memory

  • In this paper, we propose to solve the problem of increasing system memory usage due to an increase in the number of mapping information management when using a NAND flash memory-based storage device in an existing sector-based file system. The proposed technique is to store only mapping information in page units based on index blocks and manage them in block units. To this end, the proposed technique uses a sequential offset for storing and managing a plurality of mapping information in one page in a small block, and a reverse offset for a spare page corresponding to a change in mapping information in the block. Through this, the proposed technique has the advantage that the number of block-unit deletions is less than that of the existing technique, and the system memory usage required for mapping information management is low. Reduced by about 32%.

Memory Allocation and Reclamation Policies for Fast Swap Support in Mobile Systems (모바일 시스템의 고속 스왑 지원을 위한 메모리 할당 및 회수 기법)

  • Recent advancements in mobile apps have led to continuously increasing memory demands on smartphone systems. Unlike desktops, which use swap functions to backup the entire memory footprint to storage when memory space is exhausted, smartphones terminate apps and lose significant context. This occurs because large-scale I/O operations to flash memory cause severe delays when swap is enabled on smartphones. This paper discusses how efficient memory management can be performed by using eMRAM, which is faster in write operations than flash memory, as the swap area in mobile systems. Considering the characteristics of backup storage (i.e., flash memory for the file system and eMRAM for the swap areas) as well as the reference characteristics of each page, we demonstrate that the proposed memory allocation and reclamation policies can improve the smartphone's I/O performance by an average of 15%.

  • In recent times, NAND flash memory has become widely used as secondary storage for computing devices. Accordingly, to take advantage of NAND flash memory, new file systems have been actively studied and proposed. The performance of these file systems is generally measured with benchmark tools. However, since benchmark tools are executed by software simulation methods, many researchers get non-uniform benchmark results depending on the system environments. In this paper, we use Filebench, one of the most popular and representative benchmark tools, to analyze benchmark results and study the reasons why the benchmark result variations occur. Our experimental results show the differences in benchmark results depending on the system environments. In addition, this study substantiates the fact that system performance is affected mainly by background I/O requests and fsync operations.

A method for improving wear-leveling of flash file systems in workload of access locality (접근 지역성을 가지는 작업부하에서 플래시 파일시스템의 wear-leveling 향상 기법)

  • Since flash memory cannot be overwritten, new data are updated in new area. If data are frequently updated, garbage collection which is achieved by erasing blocks, should be performed to reclaim new area. Hence, because the count of erase operations is limited due to characteristics of flash memory, every block should be evenly written and erased. However, if data with access locality are processed by cost benefit algorithm with separation of hot block ad cold block though the performance of processing is hight wear-leveling is not even. In this paper, we propose CB-MB (Cost Benefit between Multi Bank) algorithm in which hot data are allocated in one bank and cold data in another bank, and in which role of hot bank and cold bank is exchanged every period. CB-MB shows that its performance is 30% better than cost benefit algorithm with separation of cold block and hot block its wear-leveling is about a third of that in standard deviation.

  • Due to advantages of NAND flash memory such as non-volatility, low access latency, low energy consumption, light weight, small size and shock resistance, it has become a better alternative over traditional magnetic disk drives, and has been widely used. Traditional DBMSs including mobile DBMSs may run on flash memory without any modification by using Flash Translation Layer (FTL), which emulates a random access block device to hide the characteristics of flash memory such as "erase-before-update". However, most existing FTLs are optimized for file systems, not for DBMSs, and traditional DBMSs are not aware of them. Also, traditional DBMSs do not consider the characteristics of flash memory. In this paper, we propose a flash-conscious storage system for DBMSs that utilizes flash memory as a main storage medium, and carefully put the characteristics of flash memory into considerations. The proposed flash-conscious storage system exploits log records to avoid costly update operations. It is shown that the proposed storage system outperforms the state.

  • A study on e-book viewer terminal in the native language of the platform-dependent studies are based, This is inefficient in memory usage and screen rendering speed, and there are frequent system updates, e-book viewer, the nature of mobile terminal platform application compatibility issues may occur. In this paper, using the mobile app framework in order to design e-book e-book viewer, analyzed the structure of ePub file parser and file more structured modules were designed and MVC. Designed and implemented to test the functionality of the memory information that is currently running to provide the ability to show the relationship of DDMS and layout components were used to show Hierarchy Viewer. As a result, rendering the screen 150%, 84% in the heap memory usage, improved performance was confirmed.

Estimating Size of Class Area Using Probe Classes in Java Virtual Machine (자바가상기계에서 탐침 클래스를 이용한 클래스 영역 크기의 예측)

  • Class area is a portion of memory where the constants, fields, and codes of the classes loaded into the Java virtual machine are kept. Knowing the size of the class area is very important especially for embedded Java system with limited memory resources. This paper induces a formula which makes it possible estimate the size of the area. The formula needs some constant values specific to target JVM implementation. We also show that these values can be found using some simple probe classes. An experimental result is included in this paper to confirm the correctness of our approach.

  • Advantages of flash memories are their shock resistance and fast read speed, which is much faster than that of a HDD. Because of these characteristics, they are increasingly used in the traditional household electric appliance and portable handset and therefore, development of file systems which use them as storage medium is increasingly needed. But they have two problems as storage medium. First, data stored in them cannot be overwritten: it must be erased before new data can be stored. Unfortunately, this erase operation usually takes about one second. Consequently, updating data in flash memories takes long time. In this paper, their problem is solved by using a data update mechanism like LFS(Log-structured File System). Second, their erase operations are restricted. We propose novel cleaning policy in order to increase the life cycle. We implemented FAT file system, which is suitable to small storage medium and solved problems, which usually happen in implementing FAT. We evaluated the performance of sequential writes and random writes on our implemented flash file system.

  • These days, there are more and more IT research institutions which foresee cloud services as the predominant IT service in the near future and there, in fact, are actual cloud services provided by some IT leading vendors. Regardless of physical location of the service and environment of the system, cloud service can provide users with storage services, usage of data and software. On the other hand, cloud service has challenges as well. Even though cloud service has its edge in terms of the extent to which the IT resource can be freely utilized regardless of the confinement of hardware, the availability is another problem to be solved. Hence, this paper is dedicated to tackle the aforementioned issues; prerequisites of cloud computing for distributed file system, open source based Hadoop distributed file system, in-memory database technology and high availability database system. Also the author tries to body out the high availability mass distributed data management architecture in cloud service's perspective using currently used distributed file system in cloud computing market.
