Superconducting $MgB_2$ fibers are in-situ grown by a diffusion method. The fibers are prepared by exposing B filaments to Mg vapor inside a folded Ta foil over a wide range of temperature and growth time. The materials are sealed inside a quartz tube by gas welding. The as - grown fibers are characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x - ray analysis. The fibers have a diameter of about $110{\mu}m$. Surface morphology of the fibers looks dependent on growth temperature and mixing ratio of Mg and B. Radial distribution of Mg ions into B is observed and analyzed over the cross - sectional area. Transport properties of the $MgB_2$ fibers are examined by a physical property measurement system. The $MgB_2$ fibers grown at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours show a superconducting transition at 39.8K with ${\Delta}T_c<$ 2.0 K. Resistance at room temperature $MgB_2$ is 3.745 $\Omega$ and residual resistivity ratio (RRR) is estimated as 4.723.
Considering dredged ground is consolidated more than one meter, Compression index prediction is very important. But, UD-sampling and consolidation test are impossible because of high moisture content and weak shear strength. This paper demonstrates the compression index relation, $C_{c(d)}=F(e_d,C_c)$, between in-situ and dredged clay using N. Keith Tovey's Omega point and soil physical properties. Good relationship is confirmed between proposed formula and measured primary consolidation result on dredged ground in The Republic of Korea.

Two dimensional(2D) crystals, composed of a single layer or a few atomic layers extracted from layered materials are attracting researchers' interest due to promising applications in the nanoelectromechanical systems. Worldwide researchers are preparing devices with suspended 2D materials to study their physical and electrical properties. However, during the fabrication process of 2D flakes on a target substrate, contamination occurs, which makes the measurement data less reliable. We propose a dry transfer method using poly-methyl methacrylate(PMMA) for the 2D flakes to transfer onto the targeted substrate. The PMMA is then removed from the device by an N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone solution and a critical point dryer, which makes the suspended 2D flakes residue free. Our method provides a clean, reliable and controllable way of fabricating micrometer-sized suspended 2D nanosheets.

High energy photons and mechanical energy produced by the process of star formation result in copious FIR molecular and atomic lines, which are important coolants of the system. Photons thermally or mechanically induced could dissociate water in the dense envelope to change relative abundances among the species of O, OH, and H2O. Here we analyze OH emission lines toward embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) observed as part of the Herschel open time key program, 'Dust, Ice, and Gas In Time (DIGIT)' in order to study the physical conditions of associated gas and the energy budget loaded on the OH line emission. According to our analysis of the Herschel/PACS spectra, OH emission peaks at the central spaxel in most of sources, but several sources show spatially extended emission structures. In the extended emission sources, the distribution of OH emission is correlated with that of [OI] emission and extended along the outflow directions. Considering the diversity of source properties, ratios between detected OH lines are relatively constant among sources. In addition, each OH line has strong correlation with bolometric luminosity. In order to determine the physical conditions of YSOs, we adopt several methods for the analysis of the OH lines: rotational diagram, non-LTE LVG analysis, and a 2-D PDR code. From the simple LVG analysis, we find that the thermal solution with the dense ( > $10^7cm^{-3}$) and warm ( ~ 100 K) OH gas reproduces the ratios of detected OH lines. However, our self-consistent PDR 2-D model, which can deal with the IR-pumping effect from the central protostar as well as the warm dust in situ, cannot fit the observational results, suggesting that an irradiated shock model is necessary for a better interpretation.
The measurement based on reliable standard operating procedures (SOPs) is important for consistent information. The objective of this study is to investigate reliable SOPs of soil physical methods, including core method for bulk density, Yamanaka hardness, and air permeameter method for air permeability. The coefficients of variation in bulk density (core method), Yamanaka hardness, and air permeability were ranged of 1~6%, 8~13%, and 10~84%, respectively. The variation in situ measurement such as bulk density, hardness, and air permeability due to spatial variability at measuring site was larger due to the number of replicates, organic matter content, and soil texture. Nevertheless, air permeability had different values as different number of replicates, and thus, it is thought that more replicates can result in higher reliability. It suggested that investigation of soil physical properties for the target sites should required to consider about soil texture, organic matter content, and number of replications before measurement. In conclusion, core sampling for bulk density measurement in upland soil recommended to perform in 3 repetitions with 2 inch core, and 3 inch core sampling for higher organic matter content.

Disposal repository for high-level radioactive waste secures its safety by means of engineered and natural barriers. The performance of these barriers should be tested and verified through various aspects in terms of short and/or long-term. KAERI has been conducting various in-situ demonstrations in KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel). After completing previous experiment, a conceptual design of an improved in-situ experiment, i.e. K-COIN (KURT experiment of THMC COupled and INteraction), was established and detailed planning for the experiment is underway. Preliminary characterizations were conducted in KURT for siting a K-COIN test site. 15 boreholes with a depth of about 20 m were drilled in three research galleries in KURT and intact rock specimens were prepared for laboratory tests. Using the specimens, physical measurements, uniaxial compression, indirect tension, and triaxial compression tests were conducted. As a result, specific gravity, porosity, elastic wave velocities, uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, Brazilian tensile strength, cohesion, and internal friction angle were estimated. Statistical analyses revealed that there did not exist meaningful differences in intact rock properties according to the drilled sites and the depth. Judging from the uniaxial compressive strength, which is one of the most important properties, all the specimens were classified as very strong rock so that mechanical safety was secured in all the regions.
In this study, the relationship between in situ seismic wave velocities and RMR (rock mass rating) was investigated in a test bed for the examination of the basis of rock classification (RMR) based on seismic wave velocity. The seismic wave velocity showed a monotonous increase with depth. It was also found that there was no systematic correlation between the seismic wave velocity (Vp) and other parameters (RQD, joint spacing, UCS, rock core Vp, and RMR) collected at the same depth of the same borehole. However, correlative relation was observed among RMR, RQD, and joint spacing. On the other hand, when all the data in the borehole (three holes) are examined without considering the depth, Vp still shows no correlation with RMR parameters (e.g., correlative coefficient for uniaxial compressive strength and joint spacing are 0.039 and 0.091, respectively), but Vp shows weak correlative relation with RMR and RQD (correlative coefficient for RQD and RMR are 0.193 and 0.211, respectively). Thus, it is found that it is difficult to deduce physical properties of rock mass directly from seismic wave velocities, but the seismic wave velocity can be used as a tool to approximate rock mass properties because of weaker correlation between Vp and RMR with RQD. In addition, the velocity value of for soft and moderate rocks suggested by widely used construction standards is slower than that of the observed velocity, implying that the standards need to be examined and revised.
The microcapsules containing triphenyl phosphate (TPP), a flame retardant, were prepared by phase-inversion emulsification technique using the epoxy resin (Novolac type) with excellent physical properties and network structure. This microencapsulation process was adopted for the protection of TPP evaporation and wetting of polymer composite during the polymer blend processing. The TPP, epoxy resin and mixed surfactants were emulsified to oil in water (O/W) by the phase inversion technology and then conducted on the crosslinking of epoxy resin by in-situ polymerization. The capsule size and size distribution of TPP capsules was controlled by mixed surfactant ratio, concentration and TPP contents, The formation and thermal property of TPP capsules were measured by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The morphology and size of TPP capsules were also investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopies. As the surfactant concentration increased, the TPP capsules were more spherical and mono-dispersed at the same weight ratio of mixed surfactants (F127: SDBS).
We have carried out Pearson-type chi-square tests on the orientation data of joints from different depths in order to estimate the homogeneity of joint orientations obtained from a borehole. The orientation data of joints were collected from two non-foliated massive rocks of granitic gneisses in South Korea since orientations of joints in folded metamorphic rocks, for example, are controlled by foliation and also changes as the orientations of foliation change by folding. Borehole images were used for the analysis of the orientations of individual joints. The orientation data were subdivided into the upper level data and lower level data. The data from these two levels are plotted on the patch net consisting of 21 orientation patches. Then, the two patterns on the patch net were analyzed using a contingency table. From the chi-square test on the data collected from two sites, we found that some data sets show statistically meaningful differences in orientations of joints. Since joints are one of the important parameters in determining the physical properties of rock masses, in situ investigation of joints are desirable in the geotechnical investigation and also in design of subsurface structures (e.g. tunnels and underground storages).
A variety of geophysical well loggings have been conducted to investigate the geological characteristics for basaltic volcanic area in Jeju Island. Specially, there is no precedent case study using geophysical well loggings in Jeju Island. And so, the proper understandings for geological features of Jeju Island are the key to interpret geophysical well logs. Presently, seawater intrusion monitoring systems have been constructed for systematic development and conservation of groundwater resources. As the results of geophysical well loggings in this seawater intrusion monitoring boreholes, the responses of well logs for saturated zone have distinctly identified basalt sequences. In particular, neutron logging, gamma-gamma (density) logging, and resistivity logging have well exhibited the characteristics of lava flows and lithologic boundaries. In hyalocastite, porosity is high, and resistivity is low. Eventually, geophysical well logs are useful for securing sustainable development of groundwater in Jeju Island in that it has identified the characteristics of geological responses.
