  • The low actuation voltage and quick bending response of IPMC(ion-exchange polymer metal composite) are considered attractive for the construction of various types of actuators. In this study, in order to develop a new type actuators by using the IPMC platinum electrode of IPMC are fabricated by using electroless impregnation-reduction method plating. As the platinum-plating times are increased, IPMC performance was improved in terms of bending displacement and force due to the enhanced surface conductivity. In addition, we investigated the basic actuation characteristics of resonance frequency and actuator length as well as the effect of water uptake and ion mobility. Using the classical laminate theory(CLT), a modeling methodology was developed to predict the deformation, bending moment, and residual stress distribution of anisotropic IPMC thin plates. In this modeling methodology, the internal stress evolved by the unsymmetric distribution of water inside IPMC was quantitatively calculated and subsequently the bending moment and the curvature were estimated for various geometry of IPMC actuator.

  • Lactose is a reducing disaccharide consisting of two different monosaccharides such as galactose and glucose. The hydrogenation of lactose to lactitol is a formidable challenge because it is a complex process and several side products are formed. In this work, we synthesized Ru-Ni bimetallic nanohybrids as efficient catalysts for selective lactose hydrogenation to give selective lactitol. Ru-Ni bimetallic nanohybrids with $Ru-NiO_x$ (x = 1, 5, and 10 wt%) are prepared by impregnating Ru and Ni salts precursors with $TiO_2$ used as support material. Ru-Ni bimetallic nanohybrids (represented as $5Ru-5NiO/TiO_2$) catalyst is found to exhibit the remarkably high selectivity of lactitol (99.4%) and turnover frequency i.e. ($374h^{-1}$). In contrast, monometallic $Ru/TiO_2$ catalyst shows poor performance with ($TOF=251h^{-1}$). The detailed characterizations confirmed a strong interaction between Ru and NiO species, demonstrating a synergistic effect on the improvement on lactitol selectivity. The impregnation-reduction method for the preparation of bimetallic $Ru-NiO/TiO_2$ catalyst promoted Ru nanoparticles dispersed on NiO and intensified the interaction between Ru and NiO species. $Ru-NiO/TiO_2$ efficiently catalyzed the hydrogenation of lactose to lactitol with high yield/selectivity at almost complete conversion of lactose at $120^{\circ}C$ and 55 bar of hydrogen ($H_2$) pressure. Moreover, $Ru-NiO/TiO_2$ catalyst could also be easily recovered and reused up to four runs without notable change in original activity.

  • Mo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method in various conditions to identify the states of surface Mo species. TPR (Temperature-Programmed Reduction) and Raman spectroscopy were applied to analyze the surface Mo species. TPR analysis revealed that MoO3 was reduced to Mo through MoO2, the intermediate state and the increase of Mo loading enhanced the reducibility of Mo oxide till the formation of monolayer coverage. High temperature calcination induced oxygen defects in MoO3 giving their unstable states for easier reduction. Raman spectroscopy analysis showed that the increase of Mo loading induced the polymeric Mo oxide.

  • The effect of Pt addition over $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst supported on PRO-66 was investigated for NO reduction in order to develop the catalytic filter working at low temperature. Catalytic filters, $Pt-V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2/PRD$, were prepared by co-impregnation of Pt, V, and W precursors on $TiO_2$-coated ceramic filter named PRD (PRD-66). Titania was coated onto the pore surface of the ceramic filter using a vacuum aided-dip coating method. The Pt-loaded catalytic filter shifted the optimum working temperature from $260-320^{\circ}C$(for the catalytic filter without Pt addition) to $190-240^{\circ}C$, reducing 700 ppm NO to achieve the $N_x$ slip concentration($N_x\;=\;NO+N_2O+NO_2+NH_3$) less than 20 ppm at the face velocity of 2 cm/s. $Pt-V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ supported on PRD showed the similar catalytic activity for NO reduction with that supported on SiC filter as reported in a previous study, which implies the ceramic filter itself has no considerable interaction for the catalytic activity.

  • Adsorption characteristics of $CO_2$ on activated carbons were evaluated using dynamic adsorption method in a fixed bed with acid treatment, LiOH impregnation and water vapor supply. Physical and chemical properties of the activated carbons were measured using SEM, EDS, nitrogen adsorption, FTIR and XRD. Nitric acid treatment led to the decrease in BET surface area and the increase in oxygen content of virgin activated carbon, and it produced a new functional group that included nitrogen. For the reduction of BET surface area by LiOH impregnation, the nitric acid treated activated carbon (NAC) was less than the virgin activated carbon (AC). Large particles of LiOH were present on the carbon surface when the content of LiOH was over 2 wt%. The adsorbed amount of $CO_2$ on activated carbon in a fixed bed increased with the acid treatment, LiOH impregnation and water vapor supply. The XRD results indicated that LiOH was converted to $Li_2CO_3$ after the adsorption of $CO_2$ on LiOH precursor.

  • The membrane electrode assembly(MEA) was prepared by a nonequilibrium impregnation- reduction (I-R) method. Nafion 117 and covalently cross-linked sulfonated polyetherether with tungsto- phosphoric acid (CL-SPEEK/TPA30) prepared by our laboratory, were chosen as polymer electrolyte membrane(PEM). $Pt(NH_3)_4Cl_2$, $RuCl_3$ and reducing agent $(NaBH_4)$ were used as electrocatalytic materials. Electrochemical activity surface area(ESA) and specific surface area(SSA) of Pt cathodic electrode with Nafion 117 were $22.48m^2/g$ and $23.50m^2/g$ respectively under the condition of 0.8 M $NaBH_4$. But Pt electrode prepared by CL-SPEEK/TPA30 membrane exhibited higher ESA $23.46m^2/g$ than that of Nafion 117. In case of Pt-Ru anodic electrode, the higher concentration of Ru was, the lower potential of oxygen reduction and region of hydrogen desorption was, and Pt-Ru electrode using 10 mM $RuCl_3$ showed best properties of SSA $34.09m^2/g$ with Nafion 117. In water electrolysis performance, the cell voltage of Pt/PEM/Pt-Ru MEA with Nafion 117 showed cell property of 1.75 V at $1A/cm^2$ and $80{\circ}C$. On the same condition, the cell voltage with CL-SPEEK/TPA30 was the best of 1.73 V at $1A/cm^2$.

  • $Mo/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3catalysts$ modified with Fe, Co, and Ni were prepared by impregnation method and catalytic activity for water gas shift reaction was examined. The optimum amount of Mo loaded for the reaction was 10 wt% $MoO_3$ to ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3.$ The catalytic activity of $MoO_3/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3was$ increased by modifying with Fe, Co, and Ni in the order of Co${\thickapprox}$ Ni > Fe. The optimum amounts of Co and Ni added were 3 wt% based on CoO and NiO to 10 wt% $MoO_3/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, restectively. The TPR (temperature-programmed reduction) analysis revealed that the addition of Co and Ni enganced the reducibility of the catalysts. The results of both catalytic activity and TPR experiments strongly suggest that the redox property of the catalyst is an important factor in water gas shift reaction on the sulfided Mo catalysts, which could be an evidence of oxy-sulfide redox mechanism.

  • In this work, we report the use of caffeine as an alternative source of nitrogen to successfully dope graphene (quaternary 400.6 eV and pyridinic at 398 eV according XPS), as well as the growth of silver nanowires (in-situ) in the surface of nitrogen doped graphene (NG) sheets. We used the improved graphene oxide method (IGO), chemical reduction of graphene oxide (GOx), and impregnation with caffeine as source of nitrogen for doping and subsequently, silver nanowires (NW) grow in the surface by the reduction of silver salts in the presence of NG, achieving a numerous of growth of NW in the graphene sheets. As supporting experimental evidence, the samples were analyzed using conventional characterization techniques: SEM-EDX, XRD, FT-IR, micro RAMAN, TEM, and XPS.

  • When platinum wan impregnated on carbon by methanol, surfactant have an important effect on the stability of platinum colloid. As the increase of amounts of surfactant enhanced the stability of platinum colloid, the particle size of platinum on carbon was diminished. But, after heat treatment, residue of surfactant remained in electrode to decrease current density of oxygen reduction. To remove surfactant, as temperature of heat treatment enhanced, platinum particle was aggromerated and current density was decreased.

  • In the present study, potassium and caesium doped Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalysts were synthesized by simple wet impregnation method and evaluated for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx using methane. TEM analysis and diffraction patterns demonstrated the finely dispersed Ag particles. BET surface measurements reveal that the prepared materials have moderate to high surface area and the metal amount found from ICP analysis was well matching with the theoretical loadings. The synthesized K-Ag/$Al_2O_3$ and Cs-Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalysts exhibited a promotional effect on deNOx activity in the presence of $SO_2$ and $H_2O$. The long-term isothermal studies at $550^{\circ}C$ under oxygen rich condition showed the superior catalytic properties of the both alkali promoted samples. The crucial catalytic properties of materials are attributed to NO adsorption properties detected by the NO TPD.
