Development of the Roundwood Import Prediction Model

  • This study developed the Korean roundwood import prediction model using vector autoregressive (VAR) method. The roundwood was divided into softwood and hardwood by species. The VAR model of roundwood import was specified with two lagged endogenous variables, that is, roundwood import volume and roundwood import price. The results showed that the significance levels of F-statistics in the softwood and hardwood roundwood import equations rejected the hypothesis that all coefficients are zero. So, we concluded that roundwood import volume can be explained by lagged import volume and lagged import price in Korea. The coefficient signs of all variables were as expected. Also, the model has good explanatory power, and there is no autocorrelation.

An Empirical Study on Trade Facilitation by the Korean Government's Single Window System

  • Purpose - Korea became a trillion-dollar trading country in 2011. With the exponential increase in Korea's trade volume over the past decades, trade-related administrative burdens per capita for Korea Customs became enormous, for which the government established the Single Window, a trade-facilitating system, in 2004 to enhance the efficiency of customs-clearing procedures for traders. This paper focuses on finding whether the Korean Single Window system affects the country's trade facilitation positively through an empirical methodology. Design/methodology - To find empirical evidence that Single Window affects trade facilitation for the customs-clearing procedure, this study assumes that a time-efficient environment enables the handling of the increase in trade volume, under which four independent variables related to import customs-clearing procedures and two dependent variables to import were adopted for empirical analysis. The import customs procedures are classified into four steps from port entry to declaration acceptance. To understand the relationship between variables, scattered plots and correlation coefficients were calculated. Eight hypotheses were set and underwent simple linear regression. The data for analysis were collected by Korea Customs, and were about the lead time of import, the volume of imports in million USD, and the number of import declarations reported to customs offices on a monthly basis from 2005 to 2013. Findings - Six of the eight hypotheses showed the statistically significant result that lead time in the import customs-clearing procedure positively affects the number of import declaration reports and import volume. Specifically, Hypothesis 1, Hypothesis 2, and Hypothesis 3 strongly support the assumption lead time in import customs declaration has an inverse relationship with the number of import declarations, which means that the shorter the import lead time, the more import declaration increases. Research Limitations/Implications - With limited data accessibility to the government's custom-sclearing procedures, only the import lead time for customs clearance were adopted as independent variables. This paper, however, successfully found that the Single Window system contributed to trade facilitation. Originality/value - This study found that the time-saving Single Window system of Korea Customs enables itself to manage an exponentially-increasing trade volume by creating a trade-facilitating environment for customs personnel and traders, which may be a unique implication found through quantitative methodology.

Estimation on the Port Container Volume in Incheon Port

  • This paper estimated the container volumes for the Incheon port with univariate time series. As best suited models Winters' additive model, ARIMA model,and Winters' additive model were selected by import-export, coastal, and transshipment volume respectively, based on the data of monthly volume by October 2008 since January 2001. This study supposed the import-export container volumes would be decreased by 14% against that in 2008 and would have been recovered to the increasing trend of the volumes beyond the fourth quarter of 2010. The future import-export and transshipment volumes showed the increasing trend beyond 2011, while the coastal volumes would be on the stagnation. The yearly container volumes were finally forecasted as 1,705, 2,432, and 3,341 thousand TEU in 2011, 2015, and 2020 respectively.

환위험과 경기 불확실성이 우리나라의 수입물동량에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Exchange Rate Risk and Industrial Activity Uncertainty on Import Container Volume in Korea)

  • 본고는 환율변동성과 경기변동성이 우리나라 수입물동량에 미치는 영향의 방향, 크기, 지속기간을 분석하였다. 본고에서 도입하는 모형이 안정적임으로써 허구적 회귀 가능성을 배제하는 것으로 나타남에 따라 장기균형식과 오차수정모형을 이용하여 수입물동량이 변수들에 의해 어떠한 영향을 받는가에 대해 추정하였다. 예상한 대로 장기방정식의 추정결과에서 경기의 호조는 수입물동량의 증가를, 변동성의 증가는 수입물동량을 감소시키는 것으로 나타났다. 수입물동량에 미치는 영향은 환율변동성이 경기변동성보다 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 또한 오차수정항의 계수가 음의 부호로 매우 큰 값을 나타내 빠른 속도로 장기균형으로 수렴하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 충격반응 분석결과에 따르면 반응과 지속기간의 크기에서 경기 변수가 가장 큰 것으로 나타났다.

의사결정나무분석을 이용한 컨테이너 수출입 물동량 예측 (Forecasting Export & Import Container Cargoes using a Decision Tree Analysis)

  • 본 연구는 의사결정나무분석을 이용하여 컨테이너 수출입 물동량을 예측한다. 컨테이너 수출입 물동량에 영향을 미칠 가능성이 있는 요인을 독립변수로 선정하였는데, 생산자물가지수와 소비자물가지수, 수출물량지수와 수입물량지수, 미국과 한국의 산업생산지수, 그리고 원/달러 환율을 선정하였다. 분석기간은 2002년 1월부터 2011년 12월까지 10년간의 월별자료를 이용하였으며, 의사결정나무를 형성하기 위해 다양한 알고리즘이 제안되고 있는데, CRT(Classification and Regression Trees)알고리즘을 활용하였다. 분석결과는 첫째, 컨테이너 수출물동량에 대한 최적분리는 수출물량지수에 의해 분리되었다. 수출물량지수는 115.90으로 분리되어 지는데, 수출물량지수가 115.90보다 큰 경우는 다시 수출물량지수가 152.35보다 큰 경우와 115.90과 152.35사이인 경우로 분리되어진다. 여기서 수출물량지수가 152.35보다 큰 경우는 858,191TEU/(월)이고, 115.90과 152.35사이인 경우는 716,582TEU/(월)로 컨테이너 수출물동량이 예측된다. 둘째, 컨테이너 수입 물동량에 대한 최적분리는 수입물량지수에 의해 분리되었다. 수입물량지수가 116.20에서 분리되어 지는데, 수입물량지수가 116.20보다 큰 경우는 다시 수입물량지수가 134.60보다 큰 경우와 116.20과 134.60사이인 경우로 분리되어진다. 여기서 수입물량지수가 134.60보다 큰 경우는 869,227TEU/(월)이고, 116.20과 134.60사이인 경우는 738,724TEU/(월)로 컨테이너 수입물동량이 예측된다.

물류성과지표가 우리나라 수출입 물동량에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Effect of Logistics Performance Index on Korea's Import and Export Cargo)

  • This study aims to investigate the relationship between cargo volume and logistics performance index published by World Bank which indicate countries' logistics performance. In this study, the results were derived through panel regression analysis consisting of variables such as gross domestic product, geographical distance, population, and LPI using container export/import volume and bulk export/import volume as dependent variables. As a result of the empirical analysis, it was found that Korea's container volume was affected by the overall level of logistics, in particular, was deeply related to the logistics infrastructure, while bulk volume was not related to the logistics level or was less influential.

A Study on Improvement of Import Insurance for Importers

  • South Korea, despite the financial turbulences has marked the trade volume of USD 1 trillion and marked $7^{th}$ largest exporter in 2013. Approximately 40% of the entire import of Korea was for export. In the South Korean trade structure, import and export are closely related, requiring proactive import financial assistance policies. Recognizing this, K-sure has made import insurance policy available on the market since July 2010. The K-sure insurance policy targets both financial institutions and importers. This is the reason why this research seeks to review the import insurance terms for importers and compare with foreign import insurance products to find out ways to improve. K-sure's import insurance for importers is to cover a loss of a policyholder when the policyholder or importer domestically addressed made a prepayment but cannot receive goods. The import insurance is applied to import transactions of goods or resources. K-sure's import insurance coverage needs to be expanded to intermediary trade and consignment processing trade, etc. In this sense, a more systematic educational program should be introduced about K-sure's import insurance.

VAR을 이용한 도매가격, 반입량, 수입량 및 수요량의 동태적 상관분석 -배추, 양파, 마늘을 중심으로- (An Dynamic Analysis on the Relationship among Prices, Trading Volumes, Import Volumes and Demand Using VAR - Focused on Cabbage, Onions, and Garlic -)

  • This paper analyses the interrelationship among wholesale price, trading volumes, import volumes and demand for three agricultural products (cabbage, onions, and garlic) by using the consumer panel and the data from the Korea Rural Economic Institute and the Korea Customs Service with a VAR model. The results are summarized as below. (1) The prices of three agricultural products decrease when trading volumes increase while the price of cabbage and onions decreases when import volumes increase. But the prices of three agricultural products have little effects on trading volumes. (2) The demand of three agricultural products increases when trading volumes increase while the demand of cabbage and onions increases when import volumes increase. (3) when demand of garlic and cabbage increases by 10%, their price increases by 2.5% and 1.3% respectively. And the demand of garlic has positive effects on import volumes of garlic.

환율변동성이 우리나라 컨테이너 수출입 물동량에 미치는 영향 분석 (Analysis of the Effect of Exchange Rate Volatility on Export & Import Container Volumes in Korea)

  • The global financial crisis has slowed overall growth in the global economy. In addition, uncertainty is increasing in the world economy due to the Trade protectionism, sluggish world trade, and a rise in the rate of interest caused by expansion of fiscal spending by major countries. In this study, we analyzed various factors affecting the container import and export volume, which has a high correlation with export and import of commodities in international trade. In particular, we will examine how exchange rate fluctuations and domestic and overseas economic conditions affect container imports and exports. For the empirical analysis, monthly time series data were used from January 2000 to January 2017. We use the Error Correction Model (VECM) for the empirical analysis and the GARCH model for the exchange rate fluctuation. As a result, container export and import volume had a negative relationship with exchange rate and exchange rate volatility, which had a positive effect on domestic and international economic conditions. However, the effects are different before and after the financial crisis.

경제변수의 변동이 광양항 수입컨테이너 물동량에 미치는 효과 (The Effects of the Changes of Economic Variables on the Import Container Volume of Gwangyang Port)

  • 광양항의 수입컨테이너 물동량은 최근 들어 빠르게 증가율이 둔화되고 있다. 이에 본 고는 광양항의 물동량이 환율과 경기와 같은 경제변수에 대해 어떠한 특성을 갖는가를 전국항과의 비교를 통해 밝힌다. 광양항의 수입물동량은 환율과 경기의 변동에 전국항보다 큰 영향을 받으며, 최근의 환율과 경기의 움직임에 특히 민감하게 반응을 하여 안정적인 물동량을 유지하지 못하고 있음을 보인다. 이와 같이 민감한 반응을 보임에도 불구하고 장기추세로부터 괴리가 있을 경우 회복하는 속도는 전국항보다 늦어 상황에 대처하는 능력이 떨어지고 있다. 예측오류의 역사적 분해를 통해 광양항의 수입물동량은 환율변동에 상당부분을 의존하고 있어서 환율 상승과 같은 악재에 특히 취약할 수 있다. 그리고 환율충격과 경기충격은 상당기간 물동량의 흐름에 영향을 미치나 환율충격은음의 반응을, 경기충격은 양의 반응을 유발한다. 환율 40원 상승과 경기 5 포인트 하락이라는 단기적 충격에 대해 광양항의 수입컨테이너 물동량은 33천 TEU가 감소하며, 이러한 충격이 1년간 유지되면 광양항의 수입물동량은 197천 TEU 감소한다는 것을 보인다.
