  • The three-dimensional incompressible clavier-Stokes equations are solved to simulate the flow field around a Wigley model with free-surface. The IAF(Implicit Approximate Factorization) method is used to show a good success in reducing the computing time. The CPU time is almost an half of that if the IAF method were used. The present method adopts the local linearization and Euler implicit scheme without the pressure-gradient terms for the artificial viscosity. Calculations are carried out at the Reynolds number of $10^6$ and the Froude numbers are 0.25, 0.289 and 0.316. For the approximations of turbulence, the Baldwin-Lomax model is used. The resulting free-surface wave configurations and the velocity vectors are compared with those by the explicit method and experiments.

  • The violent free-surface motions and the corresponding impact loads are numerically simulated by using the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method, which was originally proposed by Koshizuka and Oka (1996) for incompressible flows. In the original MPS method, there were several shortcoming including non-optimal source term, gradient and collision models, and search of free-surface particles, which led to less-accurate fluid motions and non-physical pressure fluctuations. In the present study, how those defects can be remedied is illustrated by step-by-step improvements in respective processes of the revised MPS method. The improvement of each step is explained and numerically demonstrated. The numerical results are also compared with the experimental results of Martin and Moyce (1952) for dam-breaking problem. The current numerical results for violent free-surface motions and impact pressures are in good agreement with their experimental data.

  • RTI (Rayleigh-Taylor instability) is investigated by a multi-liquid MPS (Moving Particle Semi-implicit) method for both viscous and inviscid flows for various density differences, initial-disturbance amplitudes, viscosities, and surface tensions. The MPS simulation can be continued up to the late stage of high nonlinearity with complicated patterns and its initial developments agree well with the linear theoretical results. According to the relevant linear theory, the difference between inviscid and viscous fluids is the rising velocity at which upward-mushroom-like RTI flow with vortex formation is generated. However, with the developed MPS program, significant differences in both growing patters and developing speeds are observed. Also, more dispersion can be observed in the inviscid case. With larger Atwood (AT) number, stronger RTI flows are developed earlier, as expected, with higher potential-energy differences. With larger initial disturbances, quite different patterns of RTI-development are observed compared to the small-initial-disturbance case. If AT number is small, the surface tension tends to delay and suppress the RTI development when it is sufficiently large. Interestingly, at high AT number, the RTI-suppressions by increased surface tension become less effective.

  • In the reliability analysis of general structures, the limit state equations are implicit and cannot be described in closed form. Thus, sampling methods such as the Crude Monte-Carlo simulation, and probabilistic FEM are often used, but these methods are not so effective in view of computational cost, because a number of structural analysis are required and the derivatives must be calculated for probabilistic FEM. Alternatively the response surface approach, which approximates the limit state surface by using several results of structural analysis in the region adjacent to MPFP, could be applied effectively. In this paper, the central composite design, Bucher-Bourgund method and the approximation method using artificial neural network are studied for the calculation of probability of failure by the response surface method. Through the example comparisons, it is found that Bucher-Bourgund method is very effective and Neural network method for the reliability analysis is comparable with other methods. Specially, the central composite design method is found to be rational and useful in terms of mathematical consistency and accuracy.

  • We present a novel haptic sculpting system where the user intuitively adds to and carves out material from a volumetric model using new sculpting tools in the similar way to handling real clay Haptic rendering and model deformation are implemented based on volumetric implicit surface. We enhance previous volume-based haptic sculpting systems by presenting fast and stable force computation on 3D models to be deformed. In order to bridge the gap between fast haptic process (1 KHz) and much slower visual update frequency(~30Hz), the system generates intermediate implicit surfaces between two consecutive physical models being deformed. It performs collision detection and force computation on the intermediate surface in haptic process. The volumetric model being sculpted is visualized as a geometric model which is adaptively polygonized according to the surface complexity. We also introduce various visual effects for the real-time sculpting system including mesh-based solid texturing, painting, and embossing/engraving techniques.

  • Computer-aided materials design requires new modeling approaches to characterize and represent fine-grained geometric structures and material compositions at multiple scales. Recently, a dual-Rep approach was developed to model materials microstructures based on a new basis function, called surfacelet. As a combination of implicit surface and wavelets, surfacelets can efficiently identify and represent planar, cylindrical, and ellipsoidal geometries in material microstructures and describe the distribution of compositions and properties. In this paper, these primitive surfacelets are extended and composite surfacelets are proposed to model more complex geometries. Composite surfacelets are constructed by Boolean operations on the primitives. The surfacelet transform is applied to match geometric features in three-dimensional images. The composition of the material near the identified features can then be modeled. A cubic surfacelet and a v-joint surfacelet are developed to demonstrate the reverse engineering process of retrieving material compositions from material images.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a mathematical model which can be used to compute the position of the free surface due to water level fluctuations in the canal and the transient pressure distributions along the canal lining. The diagnostic equation has been solved by the point successive over-relaxation method, and the linearized prognostic equation has been solved by the implicit Lax-Wendroff scheme. Four different cases in the simulation conditions are presented for both permeable and impermeable canal lining to predict the transient seepage surface development.

  • Reliability analysis of pile type quaywalls were done by using response surface method. Pier structures have implicit form of limit state function since they are flexible in motion, which is different from gravity type quaywalls. To solve a reliability analysis problem with implicit limit state function, response surface method was applied. Reliability indices of structure under seismic load were found for pier structures Then, they were compared with those found by simulation method. In numerical analysis, both the inclined type and vertical type were analyzed.

  • After a severe accident to the nuclear reactor, the in-vessel retention strategy is a key way to prevent the leakage of radioactive material. Nanofluid is a steady suspension used to improve heat-transfer characteristics of working fluids, formed by adding solid particles with diameters below 100nm to the base fluids, and its thermal physical properties and heat-transfer characteristics are much different from the conventional working fluids. Thus, nanofluids with appropriate nanoparticle type and volume concentration can enhance the heat-transfer process. In this study, the moving particle semi-implicit method-meshless advection using flow-directional local grid method is used to simulate the bubble growth, departure, and sliding on the downward-facing heating surface in pure water and nanofluid (1.0 vol.% $Al_2O_3/H_2O$) flow boiling processes; additionally, the bubble critical departure angle and sliding characteristics and their influence are also investigated. The results indicate that the bubble in nanofluid departs from the heating surface more easily and the critical departure inclined angle of nanofluid is greater than that of pure water. In addition, the influence of nanofluid on bubble sliding is not significant compared with pure water.

  • A particle method, recognized as one of gridless methods, has been developed to investigate non-linear free-surface motions interacting with structures. This method is more feasible and effective than conventional grid methods for solving flow fieldswith complicated boundary shapes. The method consists of particle interaction models representing pressure gradient, diffusion, incompressibility, and the free-surface boundary conditions without grids. In the present study, broken dam problems with various viscosity values are simulated to validate the developed method.
