  • To establish an optimum condition in the surface treatment and curing process will be an important parameters for the fabrication of multilayered hybrid composite materials, A17075/CFRP (CARALL : carbon fiber reinforce aluminum laminates). Effects of carbon fiber direction and thickness variation in tensile strength were investigated. And impact damage behavior of carbon fiber reinforce plastic (CFRP) and CARALL were investigated also, it was found that a partial stress increase in order of epoxy adhesive, A17075, CFRP. And the partial stress of CFRP carried out a great portion of applied stress. The impact damage resistance of CARALL was higher than that of CFRP. This is because both side Al sheet of CARALL absorb a great of impact damage.

  • Basalt and poly-ester fibers along with epoxy resin were used to produce inter-ply, intra-ply and functionally gradient hybrid composites. In all of the composites, the relative content of basalt fiber to poly-ester fiber was equal to 50 percent. The flexural and charpy impact properties of the hybrid composites are presented with particular regard to the effects of the hybrid types, stacking sequence of the plies, loading direction and loading speed. The results show that with properly choosing the composition and the stacking sequence of the plies; the inter-ply hybrid composites can achieve better flexural strength and impact absorption energy compared to the intra-ply and functionally gradient composites. The flexural strength and impact absorption energy of the functionally gradient hybrid composites is comparable to, or higher than the intra-ply sample. Also, by increasing the loading speed, the flexural strength increases while the flexural modulus does not have any special trend.

  • Many household appliances, including vacuum cleaners, are being subjected to various of impact damages, and made of plastic. However, researches on the damage of appliances materials by repetitive impacts have been rarely conducted. the mechanical stress exerted upon impact-modified polycarbonate (PC) has a great influence not only on the quality of the product but also on the life span. The purpose of this research was to quantify the effects of repetitive impact on the polycarbonate. Second, it was to design the repetitive impact tester for controlling the impact energy. The mechanical properties of tensile strength, yielding stress and strain on the specimens subjected to cyclic impacts were discussed. Tensile strength was sharply declined at the beginning of the impact cycles, while the strain gradually decreased during impact cycles.

  • This paper describes a method for a falling weight impact test to estimate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP (Carbon-fiber reinforced plastics) laminate plates based on considerations of stress wave propagation theory, which were converted to measurements of load and displacement verses time. The delamination area of impacted specimens for the different ply orientations was measured with an ultrasonic C-scanner to determine the correlation between impact energy and delamination area. The energy absorbed by a quasi-isotropic specimen having four interfaces was higher than that of orthotropic laminates with two interfaces. The more interfaces, the greater the energy absorbed. The absorbed energy of a hybrid specimen embedding GFRP (Glass-fiber reinforced plastics) layer was higher than that of normal specimens. Also, a falling weight impact tester was built to evaluate the characteristics and impact strength of CFRPs.

  • This paper aims at the evaluation on the characterization of CFRP laminate plates using falling weight impact tester. The experimentation was conducted on several laminates of different fiber and ply orientation. A system was built for the impact strength of CFRP laminates in consideration of stress wave propagation with using drop-weight impact tester as one of impact test. Absorbed energy of orthotropic composites with using T300 fiber, which are composed of the same fiber and stacking number is higher than that or quasi-isotropic specimen over impact energy 7J, but in case or using T700 fiber, much difference does not show. Also, absorbed energy of orthotropic composites with using T300 fiber, which are composed or stacking number and orientation became more than that of T700 fiber specimen; however great change doesn't show in case of quasi-isotropic specimens. It is found that influence was confirmed between impact energy and absorbed energy as the impact energy is increased with adding the falling weight.

  • It is well known that composite laminates are easily damaged by low velocity impact. Low velocity impact damage characteristics and residual compressive strength of composite laminates used in light rail transit are investigated. The damage of composite laminates subjected to impact loading are occurred matrix cracking, delamination, and fiber breakage. The damage of matrix cracking and delamination are reduced suddenly the compressive strength after impact. The objectives of this study is to evaluate impact characteristics and the relationship between impact force and inside damage of composite laminates by low velocity impact loading. UT C-scan is used to determine impact damage areas by impact loading.

  • A clear correlation exists between the compressive strength and elastic modulus of concrete. Unfortunately, determining the static elastic modulus requires destructive methods and determining the dynamic elastic modulus is greatly complicated by the shape and size of the specimens. This paper reports on a novel approach to the prediction of compressive strength in concrete cylinders using numerical calculations in conjunction with the impact-echo method. This non-destructive technique involves obtaining the speeds of P-waves and S-waves using correction factors through numerical calculation based on frequencies measured using the impact-echo method. This approach makes it possible to calculate the dynamic elastic modulus with relative ease, thereby enabling the prediction of compressive strength. Experiment results demonstrate the speed, convenience, and efficacy of the proposed method.

  • RCC consumes large quantities of natural resources like gravel stone and steel, and there is a need to investigate on an innovative material that utilizes limited quantities of natural resources but should have good mechanical strength. This study deals with the experimental investigation of strength evaluation of cementitious composites reinforced with polyolefin fibers from 0% to 2.5% (with interval of 0.5%), namely Polyolefin Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (PL-FRCC) and developing statistical regression models for compressive strength, splitting-tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength of PL-FRCC. Paired t-tests (for each PL fiber percentage 0 to 2.5%) bring out that there is significant difference in compressive and splitting-tensile strength when curing periods (3, 7, 28 days) are varied. Also, a strong relationship exists between the compressive and flexural strength of PL-FRCC. The proposed mathematical models developed in this study will be helpful to ascertain the mechanical strength of FRCC, especially, when the fiber reinforcing index is varied.

  • The failure behavior and tensile strength of sandstone materials under different strain rates are greatly different, especially under static loads and impact loads. In order to clearly investigate the failure mechanism of sandstone materials under static and impact loads, a series of Brazilian disc samples were used by employing green sandstone, red sandstone and black sandstone to carry out static and impact loading splitting tensile tests, and the failure properties subjected to two different loading conditions were analyzed and discussed. Subsequently, the failure behavior of sandstone materials also were simulated by finite element code. The good agreement between simulation results and experimental results can obtain the following significantly conclusions: (1) The relationship of the tensile strength among sandstone materials is that green sandstone < red sandstone < black sandstone, and the variation of the tensile sensitivity of sandstone materials is that green sandstone > red sandstone > black sandstone; (2) The mainly cause for the difference of dynamic tensile strength of sandstone materials is that the strength of crystal particles in sandstone material, and the tensile strength of sandstone is proportional to the fractal dimension; (3) The dynamic failure behavior of sandstone is greatly different from that of static failure behavior, and the dynamic tensile failure rate in dynamic failure behavior is about 54.92%.

  • Instrumented impact tests and compression-after-impact(CAI) tests have been used to evaluate the effect of temperature on the low-velocity impact characteristics of phenolic matrix composites reinforced with various woven glass fabric. Impact characteristics and damage area in laminates are evaluated by C-scan. It is shown that the extent of damage and residual compressive strength of the laminates vary with energy level and impact test temperature. The damage area increases with increasing impact energy and temperature. All these observations indicate reduced impact damage resistance and damage tolerance of the laminates at elevated temperature.
