Reinforced concrete (RC) slabs are exposed to several static and dynamic effects during their period of service. Accordingly, there are many studies focused on the behavior of RC slabs under these effects in the literature. However, impact loading which can be more effective than other loads is not considered in the design phase of RC slabs. This study aims to investigate the dynamic behavior of two-way RC slabs under sudden impact loading. For this purpose, 3 different simply supported slab specimens are manufactured. These specimens are tested under impact loading by using the drop test setup and necessary measurement devices such as accelerometers, dynamic load cell, LVDT and data-logger. Mass and drop height of the hammer are taken constant during experimental study. It is seen that rigidity of the specimens effect experimental results. While acceleration values increase, displacement values decrease as the sizes of the specimens have bigger values. In the numerical part of the study, artificial neural networks (ANN) analysis is utilized. ANN analysis is used to model different physical dynamic processes depending upon the experimental variables. Maximum acceleration and displacement values are predicted by ANN analysis. Experimental and numerical values are compared and it is found out that proposed ANN model has yielded consistent results in the estimation of experimental values of the test specimens.
In this study, scale down model bridge piers were fabricated and non-destructive experiments conducted with an impact load to determine scours in the ground adjacent to the bridge piers using the natural frequency of the bridge piers. Three scale-model bridge piers with different heights were fabricated, and they penetrated the ground at a depth of 0.35 m. The scours around the bridge piers were simulated as a side scour and foundation scour. The experiments were conducted in 13 steps, in which scouring around the model bridge piers was performed in 0.05 m excavation units. To derive the natural frequency, the impact load was measured with three accelerometers attached to the model bridge piers. The impact load was applied with an impact hammer, and the top of the model bridge pier was struck perpendicularly to the bridge axis. The natural frequency according to the scour progress was calculated with a fast Fourier transform. The results demonstrated that the natural frequency of each bridge pier tended to decrease with scour progress. The natural frequency also decreased with increasing pier height. With scour progress, a side scour occurred at 70% or higher of the initial natural frequency, and a foundation scour occurred at less than 70%.

The understanding of impact-induced delamination is important in safety and reliability of composite structure. In this study, a model for arrest toughness is proposed in consideration of fracture behavior of composite materials. Also, the probabilistic model is proposed to describe the variability of arrest toughness due to the nonhomogeneity of material. For these models, experiments were conducted on the Carbon/Epoxy composite plates with various thickness using the impact hammer. The elastic work factor used in J-Integral is applicable to the evaluation of energy release rate. The fracture behavior can be described by crack arrest concept and the arrest toughness is independent of the delamination size. Additionally, a probabilistic characteristics of arrest toughness is well described by the Weibull distribution function. A variation of arrest toughness increases with specimen thickness.
The free vibration analyses of the isotropic and composite(CFRP, GFRP) rectangular plates with point supports at the free edge and middle position are performed. The natural frequencies and nodal patterns of plates with point supports are experimentally determined by impact testing using an impact hammer. To compare and verify these experimental results, the finite element analysis is also carried out. The effect of the point support position, the number of point supports, and the anisotropic parameters on the natural frequencies and nodal patterns of cantilevered rectangular plates are investigated.

The free vibration analysis of cantilever CFRP and GFRP composite rectangular plates with point supports at the free edge and interior position is performed. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of plates are experimentally determined by impact testing using an impact hammer. To compare and verify these experimental results, the finite element analysis is also carried out and the non-dimensional frequency parameters are compared with FE analysis results. The effects of the number and location of the point support on the frequencies are examined. In the experimental results, it is found that a significant increase in frequencies occurs when the point supports are added on certain parts of plates.

Explosively activated pyro-technic device is used to release exhausted rocket booster or payloads at prescribed times in the rocket's flight. It creates pyro-shock environment that rocket or payload components must survive. With the shock spectra acquired from flight data, laboratory test should be performed before flight to check whether all of component can sustain the shock environment. The pyro-shock environment simulation was created by the resonance fixture response to a projectile impact. Desired shock spectra is realized by adjusting the natural frequency of resonance plate and the velocity of impact hammer. This paper describes the development process of Pyro-shock testing machine, which is designed and tested by Korean engineers, to verify components of Korean Sounding Rocket(KSR-3) and the other Korean space vehicle. Both analytical and experimental techniques are introduced in this paper.

Accident statistics shows that the portion of fatal occupant injuries due to side impacts is considerably high. The side impact usually leads to a severe intrusion of side structure into the passenger compartment. Furthermore, the safety zone for the side impact is relatively small compared to the front impact. Those kinds of physics for side impact frequently result in a fatal injury for the occupant. Therefore, NHTSA and EEVC are trying to intensify the regulation for the occupant protection against side impact. Both the regulation and recent market trends are asking for an installation of side airbag. There are several types of system configuration for side impact sensing. In this paper, we adopt the acceleration-based remote sensing method for the side airbag control system. We mainly focus on the development of hardware and crash discrimination algorithm of remote sensing unit. The crash discrimination algorithm needs fast decision of airbag firing especially for high-speed side impact such as FMVSS 214 and EEVC tests. It is also required to distinguish between low-speed fire and no-fire events. The algorithm should have a sufficient safety margin against any misuse situation such as hammer blow, door slam, etc. This paper introduces several firing criteria such as acceleration. velocity and energy criteria that use physical value proportional to crash severity. We have made a simulation program by using Matlab/Simulink to implement the proposed algorithm. We have conducted an algorithm calibration by using real crash data for 2,500cc vehicle. The crash performance obtained by the simulation was verified through a pulse injection method. It turned out that the results satisfied the system requirements well.

This study investigated the recovery of metallic aluminium in the black dross generated from used beverage can recycling process with crushing mechanism such as compression and impact. The as-received Al black dross had a spherical shape, and its size was about 10~40 mm. Also, The X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the main contents of black dross are composed of halite (NaCl), sylvite (KCl), spinel ($MgAl_2O_4$) and corundum ($Al_2O_3$). A metallic aluminium recovery test was performed using jaw crusher and hammer mill having different crushing mechanism. It was analysed that Jaw crushing process can separate into metallic aluminium and non metallic constituents. However, hammer milling process shows significant difference on the separation results. It was found that jaw crushing process was effective for recovery of metallic aluminium in the black dross than that of hammer milling process.

Assessment of the dynamics properties, like damping, dynamic stiffness and resonance sharpness is essential for the development of a robust system, specifically for the reduction of a traction motor noise. A practical method for identifying dynamic characteristics of a traction motor hosing for an electric vehicle is proposed. Assembling using interference fit of the components of the motor is attributed to the main cause of strong nonlinearity. It is well known that nonlinearity of a structure makes it difficult to assess damping properties or dynamic characteristics of the system. This research presents a practical damping or dynamic stiffness identifying procedures for a nonlinear system according to the boundary condition between assembled components. Based on the simple idea that impact forces of modal tests are highly affected on the condition of the hammer tip, Auto Power Spectrum of the impact forces are used to assess the assembling condition and dynamic characteristics of the system, especially, damping of the system.

In this research, the cylindrical absorber made of expanded metal sheets under impact loading has been examined. Expanded metal sheets due to their low weight, effective collapse mechanism has a high energy absorption capacity. Two types of absorbers with different cells angle were examined. First, the absorber with cell angle ${\alpha}=0$ and then the absorber with angle cell ${\alpha}=90$. Experimental Study is done by drop Hammer device and numerical investigation is done by finite element of ABAQUS software. The output of device is acceleration-time Diagram which is shown by Accelerometer that is located on the picky mass. Also the output of ABAQUS software is shown by force-displacement diagram. In this research, the numerical and experimental study of the collapse type, force-displacement diagrams and effective parameters has been investigated. Similarly, the comparison between numerical and experimental results has been observed that these results are matched well with each other. From the obtained results it was observed that the absorber with cell angle ${\alpha}=0$, have symmetric collapse and had high energy absorption capacity but the absorber with cell angle ${\alpha}=90$, had global buckling and the energy absorption value was not suitable.
