Infections involving Echinostoma hortense (E. hortense) are considered to more severe than infections caused by other heterophyids. Although parasite expulsion by host immune responses attenuates the symptoms of infection, the detailed mechanisms of the host immune response need to be determined, especially in local immune responses involving cytokine and immunoglobulin expressions. We infected BALB/c mice with E. hortense and examined recovery rates together with expressions of multiple cytokines and immunoglobulins in the villi and crypts of the small intestine using immunohistochemistry. We observed a close correlation between worm expulsion rates and cytokine/immunoglobulin expressions in E. hortense infected mice. This study contributes to an understanding of the relationship between the immune response and parasite expulsion in hosts.

Objective: This study was conducted to investigate whether acupuncture and moxibustion treatment could improve proteinuria in immunoglobulin A nephropathy. Methods: A 25-year-old man diagnosed with immunoglobulin A nephropathy had severely increased proteinuria. We conducted acupuncture treatment and moxibustion treatment on the abdominal area between the abdominal aorta and kidney at level L2. Results: After five months of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment, the patient's urine albumin/creatinine ratio and urine protein/creatinine ratio had improved from 0.571 to 0.28 and 0.79 to 0.47, respectively. Conclusions: This case report suggests that acupuncture and moxibustion treatment may ameliorate proteinuria in immunoglobulin A nephropathy.

The 'Dielectrophoretic Tweezers(DEP Tweezers)' can be used as a facile, economical toolkit for quantitative measurement of chemical and biological binding forces related to many biological interactions within a microfluidic device. Our experimental setup can probe the interaction between a single receptor molecule and its specific ligand. Immunoglobulin G(IgG) functionalized on polystyrene microspheres has been used to detect individual surface linked Staphylococcus protein A(SpA) molecules and to characterize the strength of the noncovalent IgG-SpA bond. It was measured and compared with the existing measurements. Measured single binding force of between Goat, Rabbit IgG and SpA were $17{\pm}7pN$, $74{\pm}16pN$. This work can be used to investigate several different ligand-receptor interactions and antigen-antibody interactions.

Background: Defective or immature antibody responses to pathogens in children may explain the increased susceptibility to acute otitis media. However, there is no study in Korea patients whether a correlation exists between otitis media with effusion and the levels of serum immunoglobulins, IgG subclasses, IgA, IgM and IgE. Methods: 45 children with otitis media with effusion more than 4 episodes in 12 months or 3 episodes in 6 months, 62 children with otitis media with effusion less than 3 episodes in 12 months and 102 children for control group took part in the study at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the KyungHee University from May 2004 to Feburary 2007. Serum immunoglobulin levels were determined by nephelometry. And then the relationship between otitis media with effusion and serum immunoglobulin level was evaluated. Results: In otitis media prone group, serum IgG1, IgG2, IgG4, and IgA level was lower than those level of control group, it was significantly decreased (p<0.05). In otitis media group, serum IgA, IgE, and IgG4 level was lower than those level of control. But it was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: Lower immunoglobulins in children with otitis media with effusion suggest a generalized decreased antibody responses. Lower levels of serum IgG1, IgG2, IgG4, and IgA may be related with chronicity or intractability of otitis media with effusion.

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4RD) is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by tissue infiltration with lymphocytes and IgG4-secreting plasma cells, as well as varying degrees of fibrosis. We report a case of a 70-year-old man with a rapid-growing cervical mass for several months. Computed tomography and positron emission tomography showed a huge, ill-defined mass involving left thyroid lobe and encasing the common carotid artery, which was clinically and radiologically suspicious for anaplastic thyroid carcinoma. Ultrasonography-guided core needle biopsy was performed and histopathology examination revealed to be consistent with IgG4RD, and the IgG4/IgG ratio was 0.6. After oral corticosteroid was administered, the mass was dramatically resolved. Because IgG4RD often presents as a single localized and infiltrated mass lesion, it can be confused and misdiagnosed as a malignancy. Thus, clinicians should consider IgG4RD as a differential diagnosis in a rapid-growing neck mass to prevent unnecessary and excessive treatments.

Kimura's disease is an angiolymphoid-proliferative disorder that manifests with benign subcutaneous swelling predominantly in the head and the neck. Kidney involvement, including proteinuria, occurs in 12-16% of patients with the disease, and 60-78% of such cases is nephrotic syndrome. Reported etiologies of nephrotic syndrome in Kimura's disease include membranous glomerulonephritis, mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis, minimal-change disease, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis and immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy. There have been only two case reports of IgA nephropathy in Kimura's disease, in 1998. In this report, we present a third case of IgA nephropathy associated with Kimura's disease.

POEMS syndrome is a multisystem disorder associated with polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, a monoclonal protein(M-protein), and skin change. Recently we have had the opportunity to attend one patient with clinical features similar to this syndrome. He was a 46-year-old man who had a progressive polyneuropathy, swallowing difficulty, hepatosplenomegaly, hypothyroidism, IgA ${\lambda}type$ monoclonal gammapathy, specific skin change and ascites. His symptoms such as low extrimity pain and weakness, swallowing difficulty were improved by high-dose 7S-IgG. Thus, we report a case with a review of the literature.

Bisphenol A(BPA). a monomer used in the manufacturing epoxy resins and polycarbonates. has been reported to induce estrogenic activity, it has been considered as an environmental endocrine disruptor. But the immunomodulatory effects of BPA exposure have not been systemically evaluated. We investigated whether BPA effects on the ability of immunoglobulin(lg) production of mice. To initiate investigation of BPA-induced alterations of the immune system. BPA at dose of 100. 500,1000 mg/kg b.w./day with or without OVA-antigen for 30 days were orally administered to female ICR mice. Mice were sacrificed and serum was colleted on day 2 following administration of BPA for 30days. Total lgG1. total lgG2a. total lgE. OVA-specific lgG1. OVA-specific lgG2a. and OVA-specific lgE in serum were detetmined and compared with those of non-treated mice. In the groups of BPA with OVA antigen, total 1gG1, total lgG2a, total lgE. OVA-specific lgG1 and OVA-specific lgG2a were significantly decreased at dose of 500mg/kg/day. However, in mice treated with BPA alone, total lgG1, and lgG2 were not much altered and total lgE was significantly increased at dose of 1000mg/kg/day. These results demonstrated the BPA modulates the production of immunoglobulin.

Immunoglobulin Y (IgY) obtained from chicken as the immunization host brings several advantages to antibody production, such as improved yield, lower cost, longer stability, and higher specificity than mammalian immunoglobulin. In the present study, we attempted to purify Maackia fauriei lectin using antilectin IgY-affinity chromatography in order to produce a good yield and to reduce the purification time. (omitted)

Solitary plasmacytoma of the lung are extremely rare, and are sorts of plasma cell dyscrasia which are characterized by the elaboration of excessive amount of immunoglobulin or their constituent units. We experienced one case of plasmacytoma on the left lower lobe which was treated by left pneumonectomy. It was proven that the plasmacytoma produced immunoglobulin M and kappa chain by immunofluorescent technique. During the follow up period, 2 1/2 years after surgical removal of tumor mass, there were no local recurrence and dissemination.
