  • Immersive media, also known as spatial media, has become essential with the decrease in face-to-face activities in the COVID-19 pandemic era. Teleconference, metaverse, and digital twin have been developed with high expectations as immersive media services, and the demand for hyper-realistic media is increasing. Under these circumstances, MPEG-I Immersive Media is being standardized as a technologies of navigable virtual reality, which is expected to be launched in the first half of 2024, and the Audio Group is working to standardize the immersive audio technology. Following this trend, this article introduces the trend in MPEG-I immersive audio standardization. Further, it describes the features of the immersive audio rendering technology, focusing on the structure and function of the RM0 base technology, which was chosen after evaluating all the technologies proposed in the January 2022 "MPEG Audio Meeting."

  • This study aimed to determine whether there is a significant difference in play properties in the case of media conversion through the combination of analog three-dimensional puzzles and immersive media in children's experience. Based on Roger Caillois' play theory and the contents of previous research, an experience was conducted on an experimental group and control group, and a questionnaire was prepared. The results of the correlation and paired t-test analysis showed that the play properties were higher and more evenly distributed in the media conversion immersive experience. This implies that an increase in children's fun during the immersive experience further increases their immersion, suggesting that the use of immersive media may have a positive effect on children who achieve holistic development through play and experience. We hope that this study will help recognize the difference in effectiveness through conversion into immersive media and will be referenced in various media studies that consider double-play properties.

  • Physiological devices and immersive technologies are crucial innovations being implemented for construction safety. Physiological devices provide insights into the wellbeing of workers while immersive technologies have a potential to simulate or enhance construction environments. These two technologies present numerous benefits for construction safety and have been extensively implemented in various dimensions. In addition to the individual benefits of these two technologies, combining them presents more opportunities for construction safety research and numerous studies have been conducted using this approach. However, despite promising results achieved by studies which have used this technological combination, no review has been conducted to summarize the findings of these studies. This review therefore summarizes studies that have combined immersive technologies with physiological monitoring for construction safety. A systematic approach is employed, and 24 articles are reviewed. This review highlights four safety aspects which have been explored using a combination of immersive technologies and physiological monitoring. These aspects are (1) Safety training and evaluation (2) Hazard identification (3) Attention assessment and (4) Cognitive strain assessment. In addition, there are three main directions for future research. (1) Future studies should explore other types of immersive technologies such as immersive audio (2) Physiological reactions to hazard exposure should be studied and (3) More multi-physiological approaches should be adopted.

  • The aim of this study was to examine the trends (e.g., the distribution of the studies by year, country, research methods, and participants' education level) and fundamental findings [e.g., interaction in Virtual Reality (VR) environments, educational content through VR and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies, learning environment in AR, etc.] regarding immersive learning technologies such as VR and AR in English Language Teaching (ELT) between 2010 and 2019. Employing a systematic review research methodology, data was gathered from 59 academic articles published in the following databases: EBSCOhost, ERIC, Web of Science, and Taylor & Francis. The studies were analyzed using a content analysis approach, and findings demonstrated that immersive learning technologies in ELT came to prominence in 2017. Mixed methods research was the most widely employed research method. The most studied language skill was vocabulary for AR and speaking for VR. The results also revealed advantages and challenges with regards to the use of immersive learning technologies in ELT. Further analysis illustrated the findings related to characteristics of immersive learning technologies in ELT. Based on this review, research and design implications for researchers and practitioners are presented.

  • The Republic of Korea (ROK) Army is developing the Army Synthetic Battlefield Training System and plans divisional-level Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) integrated training. This study proposes a plan to apply VR/AR/MR (Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality/Mixed Reality) technology to LVC integrated training systems to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of future LVC integrated training. The study investigated immersive military training systems in the ROK and advanced countries. As a result, we confirm that immersive technology can significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of military training. Accordingly, we review the key technologies required for building a defense training system with immersive features and propose training subjects that can be enhanced in effectiveness and efficiency when built with an immersive approach. We also propose a plan to apply immersive technology to the Live, Virtual, and Constructive systems for the development of future LVC integrated training system.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential of immersive environments in the design domain by analyzing students' design process in immersive environments from cognitive and experiential aspects. To do this, we reviewed major concepts and theories such as users' immersion, participation, presence, and awareness and developed a comprehensive conceptual framework of immersive shared environments. In three different visualization systems of HIVE, teams consisting two students were assigned to design tasks and the design process was analyzed by a customized framework. The characteristics of the immersive environment related to the performance of the design task were different from those of the previous studies. The perception of the relationship between the spaces is very important, and the perception of the surrounding objects is interested in the shape or the material such as whether the object is flat or inclined. Also, it is found that the multi-technology of immersive environments is very useful for creative collaboration. In the future, a more comprehensive analysis of the effects on design decisions in a more diverse visual interface condition and the effects on more diverse design areas should be added.

  • Immersive space is a new type of space, which is converged with other domains and expressed in various ways and here, a mutual exchange between space and participants is realized with active intervention of participants. The purpose of this study is to examine boundary changes and characteristics in virtual space and reality or inside and outside, focusing on immersive space. For this study, a case analysis was conducted, based on the key words regarding flow experience and boundary characteristics in immersive space. The boundary characteristics extracted are as follow. First, while immersive space is overlapped in many different ways, the boundary in space gradually changes and one unique and convergent space is formed. Also, a combination of overlap is made with internal and external physical force and a convergent boundary is created. Second, forms are mixed in diverse ways and an unrealistic boundary space is revealed. For new experience, it has familiar, but new experiential characteristics and also shows an expanded boundary by the medium of different domains. Third, a simultaneous space, based on variability of time and space, has an ambiguous boundary due to a meaningless physical boundary of space and changing into a space region constantly, it becomes an unlimited variable space. Fourth, a linear expansion-based emergent space has nonlinearity, which creates a meaningless boundary, recognized as an irregular, dynamic and transformative space and expands to a creative space. In conclusion, it is anticipated that based on diverse characteristics found in immersive space, this study would give unlimited inspiration to many design fields and art creation activities and contribute to a further development through continued research on immersive space.
