  • In image dehazing, the existing transmission estimators bring out the halo artifact at boundaries unless they adopt a refinement process with the high computational complexity. We analyze how the existing transmission estimation methods suffer from the halo artifact at the boundaries and observed that the elaborate, high computational refinement processes to remove the halo effect are excessive for dehazing. On the basis of the analysis and observation, we embed a simple segmentation logic in an existing transmission estimator, which is sufficiently accurate for dehazing. The experiment verifies that the proposed method significantly reduces the halo artifact without requiring any refinement process.

  • This paper presents low-complexity single-image dehazing to enhance the visibility of outdoor images that are susceptible to degradation due to weather and environmental conditions, and applies it to various devices. The conventional methods involve refinement of coarse transmission with high computational complexity and extensive memory requirements. But the proposed transmission estimation method includes excellent edge-preserving performance from comparison of the pixel-based dark channel and the patch-based dark channel in the vicinity of edges, and transmission can be estimated with low complexity since no refinement is required. Moreover, it is possible to accurately estimate transmissions and adaptively remove haze according to the characteristics of the images via prediction of the atmospheric light for each pixel using joint bright and dark channel (JBDC). Comprehensive experiments on various hazy images show that the proposed method exhibits reduced computational complexity and excellent dehazing performance, compared to the existing methods; thus, it can be applied to various fields including real-time devices.

  • Images taken in haze weather are characteristic of low contrast and poor visibility. The process of reconstructing clear-weather image from a hazy image is called dehazing. The main challenge of image dehazing is to estimate the transmission map or depth map for an input hazy image. In this paper, we propose a single image dehazing method by utilizing the Generative Adversarial Network(GAN) for accurate depth map estimation. The proposed GAN model is trained to learn a nonlinear mapping between the input hazy image and corresponding depth map. With the trained model, first the depth map of the input hazy image is estimated and used to compute the transmission map. Then a guided filter is utilized to preserve the important edge information of the hazy image, thus obtaining a refined transmission map. Finally, the haze-free image is recovered via atmospheric scattering model. Although the proposed GAN model is trained on synthetic indoor images, it can be applied to real hazy images. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves superior dehazing results against the state-of-the-art algorithms on both the real hazy images and the synthetic hazy images, in terms of quantitative performance and visual performance.

  • This paper proposes a single image dehazing that utilizes the transmission estimation with low complexity and the pixel-based JBDCP (Joint Bright and Dark Channel Prior) for the effective application of hazy outdoor images. The conventional transmission estimation includes the refinement process with high computational complexity and memory requirements. We propose the transmission estimation using combination of pixel- and block-based dark channel information and it significantly reduces the complexity while preserving the edge information accurately. Moreover, it is possible to estimate the transmission reflecting the image characteristics, by obtaining a different air-light for each pixel position of the image using the pixel-based JBDCP. Experimental results on various hazy images illustrate that the proposed method exhibits excellent dehazing performance with low complexity compared to the conventional methods; thus, it can be applied in various fields including real-time devices.

  • In this paper, we propose a new single-image dehazing method. The proposed method constructs color ellipsoids that are statistically fitted to haze pixel clusters in RGB space and then calculates the transmission values through color ellipsoid geometry. The transmission values generated by the proposed method maximize the contrast of dehazed pixels, while preventing over-saturated pixels. The values are also statistically robust because they are calculated from the averages of the haze pixel values. Furthermore, rather than apply a highly complex refinement process to reduce halo or unnatural artifacts, we embed a fuzzy segmentation process into the construction of the color ellipsoid so that the proposed method simultaneously executes the transmission calculation and the refinement process. The results of an experimental performance evaluation verify that compared to prevailing dehazing methods the proposed method performs effectively across a wide range of haze and noise levels without causing any visible artifacts. Moreover, the relatively low complexity of the proposed method will facilitate its real-time applications.

  • This paper presents a method of single image dehazing and feature matching for aerial remote sensing images. In the case of a aerial image, transferring the information of the original image is difficult as the contrast leans by the haze. This also causes that the image contrast decreases. Therefore, a refined transmission map based on a hidden Markov random field. Moreover, the proposed algorithm enhances the accuracy of image matching surface-based features in an aerial remote sensing image. The performance of the proposed algorithm is confirmed using a variety of aerial images captured by a Worldview-2 satellite.

  • In this paper, we propose a visibility enhancement method using dehazing method in fog situation. The proposed method calculate low bound of the transmission rate that indicate fog rate and transmission that processed power operation in each pixel by the user's control. And we obtain the dehazed image using calculated transmission rate. Proposed method is possible real-time processing, because the method don't cause halo effect and drop operations from filtering by closed form. We can obtain the dehazed image in various fog conditions by user control that strength of removing fog can be adjusted according to the dgree of fog.

  • Underwater images usually have various problems, such as the color cast of underwater images due to the attenuation of different lights in water, the darkness of image caused by the lack of light underwater, and the haze effect of underwater images because of the scattering of light. To address the above problems, the channel attention mechanism, strengthen-operate-subtract (SOS) boosting mechanism and gated fusion module are introduced in our paper, based on which, an underwater image recovery network is proposed. First, for the color cast problem of underwater images, the channel attention mechanism is incorporated in our model, which can well alleviate the color cast of underwater images. Second, as for the darkness of underwater images, the similarity between the target underwater image after dehazing and color correcting, and the image output by our model is used as the loss function, so as to increase the brightness of the underwater image. Finally, we employ the SOS boosting module to eliminate the haze effect of underwater images. Moreover, experiments were carried out to evaluate the performance of our model. The qualitative analysis results show that our method can be applied to effectively recover the underwater images, which outperformed most methods for comparison according to various criteria in the quantitative analysis.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method to effectively eliminate flickering artifacts caused by dehazing in video sequences. When applying a dehazing technique directly to each image in a video sequence, flicker artifacts may occur because atmospheric values are calculated without considering the relation of adjacent frames. Although some existing methods reduce flickering artifacts by calculating highly correlated transmission values between adjacent frames, flickering artifacts may still occur. Therefore, in order to effectively reduce flickering artifacts, we propose a novel approach considering temporal averages of atmospheric light values calculated from adjacent frames. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method achieves better performance of video dehazing with less flickering artifact than existing methods.

  • Haze is an extreme reason of the reduction of contrast when capturing image in the outdoor. Recently, there are several single image dehazing techniques, but they are not robust in dynamic variations of natural environment caused by the thickness, coverage of haze and appearance of sunlight. In this paper, we propose an effective and robust method to restore degradation of hazy image. Compare with conventional methods, our proposal have better performance and computation time.
