With the development of artificial intelligence technology, various methods have been developed for recognizing objects in images using machine learning. Image segmentation is the most effective among these methods for recognizing objects within an image. Conventionally, image datasets of various classes are trained simultaneously. In situations where several classes require segmentation, all datasets have to be trained thoroughly. Such repeated training results in low training efficiency because most of the classes have already been trained. In addition, the number of classes that appear in the datasets affects training. Some classes appear in datasets in remarkably smaller numbers than others, and hence, the training errors will not be properly reflected when all the classes are trained simultaneously. Therefore, a new method that separates some classes from the dataset is proposed to improve efficiency during training. In addition, the accuracies of the conventional and proposed methods are compared.
This study a imed to analyze the effect of combined optical and radar image for the land cover classification in coastal region. The study area, Gyeonggi Bay area has one of the largest tidal ranges and has frequent land cover changes due to the several reclamations and rather intensive land uses. Ten land cover types were classified using several datasets of combining Landsat ETM+ and RADARSAT imagery. The synergic effects of the merged datasets were analyzed by both visual interpretation and an ordinary supervised classification. The merged optical and SAR datasets provided better discrimination among the land cover classes in the coastal area. The overall classification accuracy of merged datasets was improved to 86.5% as compared to 78% accuracy of using ETM+ only.
Structural health monitoring (SHM) plays a vital role in the maintenance and operation of constructions. In recent years, autonomous inspection has received considerable attention because conventional monitoring methods are inefficient and expensive to some extent. To develop autonomous inspection, a potential approach of crack identification is needed to locate defects. Therefore, this study exploits two deep learning-based segmentation models, DeepLabv3+ and Mask R-CNN, for crack segmentation because these two segmentation models can outperform other similar models on public datasets. Additionally, impacts of label quality on model performance are explored to obtain an empirical guideline on the preparation of image datasets. The influence of image cropping and label refining are also investigated, and different strategies are applied to the dataset, resulting in six alternated datasets. By conducting experiments with these datasets, the highest mean Intersection-over-Union (mIoU), 75%, is achieved by Mask R-CNN. The rise in the percentage of annotations by image cropping improves model performance while the label refining has opposite effects on the two models. As the label refining results in fewer error annotations of cracks, this modification enhances the performance of DeepLabv3+. Instead, the performance of Mask R-CNN decreases because fragmented annotations may mistake an instance as multiple instances. To sum up, both DeepLabv3+ and Mask R-CNN are capable of crack identification, and an empirical guideline on the data preparation is presented to strengthen identification successfulness via image cropping and label refining.

Accurate classification of cloud images is a challenging task. Almost all the existing methods rely on hand-crafted feature extraction. Their limitation is low discriminative power. In the recent years, deep learning with convolution neural networks (CNNs), which can auto extract features, has achieved promising results in many computer vision and image understanding fields. However, deep learning approaches usually need large datasets. This paper proposes a deep learning approach for classification of cloud image patches on small datasets. First, we design a suitable deep learning model for small datasets using a CNN, and then we apply data augmentation and dropout regularization techniques to increase the generalization of the model. The experiments for the proposed approach were performed on SWIMCAT small dataset with k-fold cross-validation. The experimental results demonstrated perfect classification accuracy for most classes on every fold, and confirmed both the high accuracy and the robustness of the proposed model.
High-quality image datasets are in high demand for various applications. With many online sources providing manually collected datasets, a persisting challenge is to fully automate the dataset collection process. In this study, we surveyed an automatic image dataset generation field through analyzing a collection of existing studies. Moreover, we examined fields that are closely related to automated dataset generation, such as query expansion, web scraping, and dataset quality. We assess how both noise and regional search engine differences can be addressed using an automated search query expansion focused on hypernyms, allowing for user-specific manual query expansion. Combining these aspects provides an outline of how a modern web scraping application can produce large-scale image datasets.
The characteristics of neighborhood correlation images for change detection were explored at different spatial resolution scales. Bi-temporal QuickBird datasets of Las Vegas, NV were used for the high spatial resolution image analysis, while bi-temporal Landsat $TM/ETM^{+}$ datasets of Suwon, South Korea were used for the mid spatial resolution analysis. The neighborhood correlation images consisting of three variables (correlation, slope, and intercept) were evaluated and compared between the two scales for change detection. The neighborhood correlation images created using the Landsat datasets resulted in somewhat different patterns from those using the QuickBird high spatial resolution imagery due to several reasons such as the impact of mixed pixels. Then, automated binary change detection was also performed using the single and multiple neighborhood correlation image variables for both spatial resolution image scales.
The applications and user interfaces (UIs) of smart mobile devices are constantly diversifying. For example, deep learning can be an innovative solution to classify widgets in screen images for increasing convenience. To this end, the present research leverages captured images and the ReDraw dataset to write deep learning datasets for image classification purposes. First, as the validation for datasets using ResNet50 and EfficientNet, the experiments show that the dataset composed in this study is helpful for classification according to a widget's functionality. An implementation for widget detection and classification on RetinaNet and EfficientNet is then executed. Finally, the research suggests the Widg-C and Widg-D datasets-a deep learning dataset for identifying the widgets of smart devices-and implementing them for use with representative convolutional neural network models.

This paper proposes a method for constructing and verifying datasets used in deep learning technology, to prevent safety accidents in automated construction machinery or autonomous vehicles. Although open datasets for developing image recognition technologies are challenging to meet requirements desired by users, this study proposes the interface of virtual simulators to facilitate the creation of training datasets desired by users. The pixel-level training image dataset was verified by creating scenarios, including various road types and objects in a virtual environment. Detecting an object from an image may interfere with the accurate path determination due to occlusion areas covered by another object. Thus, we construct a database, for developing an occlusion area detection algorithm in a virtual environment. Additionally, we present the possibility of its use as a deep learning dataset to calculate a grid map, that enables path search considering occlusion areas. Custom datasets are built using the RDBMS system.
The existing image quality assessment (IQA) datasets have a small number of samples. Some methods based on transfer learning or data augmentation cannot make good use of image quality-related features. A No Reference (NR)-IQA method based on multi-task training and quality awareness is proposed. First, single or multiple distortion types and levels are imposed on the original image, and different strategies are used to augment different types of distortion datasets. With the idea of weak supervision, we use the Full Reference (FR)-IQA methods to obtain the pseudo-score label of the generated image. Then, we combine the classification information of the distortion type, level, and the information of the image quality score. The ResNet50 network is trained in the pre-train stage on the augmented dataset to obtain more quality-aware pre-training weights. Finally, the fine-tuning stage training is performed on the target IQA dataset using the quality-aware weights to predicate the final prediction score. Various experiments designed on the synthetic distortions and authentic distortions datasets (LIVE, CSIQ, TID2013, LIVEC, KonIQ-10K) prove that the proposed method can utilize the image quality-related features better than the method using only single-task training. The extracted quality-aware features improve the accuracy of the model.
The drastic advance of recent deep learning technologies is heavily dependent on training datasets which are essential to train models by themselves with less human efforts. In comparison with the work to design deep learning models, preparing datasets is a long haul; at the moment, in the domain of vision intelligent, datasets are still being made by handwork requiring a lot of time and efforts, where workers need to directly make labels on each image usually with GUI-based labeling tools. In this paper, we overview the current status of vision datasets focusing on what datasets are being shared and how they are prepared with various labeling tools. Particularly, in order to relieve the repetitive and tiring labeling work, we present an interactive smart image annotating system with which the annotation work can be transformed from the direct human-only manual labeling to a correction-after-checking by means of a support of automatic labeling. In an experiment, we show that automatic labeling can greatly improve the productivity of datasets especially reducing time and efforts to specify regions of objects found in images. Finally, we discuss critical issues that we faced in the experiment to our annotation system and describe future work to raise the productivity of image datasets creation for accelerating AI technology.
