  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the hypersonic reactive flow around hyperbolic shaped ballistic launcher, A numerical study was carried out to compare with the experimental results of hyperbolic shaped model, which were tested in a free piston shock tunnel, T3 in ANU. Freestream condition was 98% $N_2$, 2% $O_2$, and total enthalpy was 8MJ/kg. Also this paper used 2-temperature and 1-temperature model to show the difference of them.

  • Scramjets are a class of hypersonic airbreathing engine that are associated with realizing the technology required for economical, reliable access-to-space and high-speed atmospheric transport. After-burning augments the thrust produced by the scramjet nozzle and creates a more robust nozzle design. This paper presents a numerical study of three parameters and the effect that they have on thrust augmentation. These parameters include the injection pressure, injection angle and streamwise injection position. It is shown that significant levels of thrust augmentation are produced based upon contributions from increased pressure, mass flow and energy in the nozzle. Further understanding of the phenomenon by which thrust augmentation is being produced is provided in the form of a force contribution breakdown, analysis of the nozzle flowfields and finally the analysis of the surface pressure and shear stress distributions acting upon the nozzle wall.

  • Matching inviscid and boundary layer methods are developed for analysis of hypersonic flow with thick boundary layer. The new equations match all the boundary layer properties with a variation in the inviscid solution near the edge, except for the normal velocity. Computational comparison are peformed for incompressible and compressible flows over a flat plate. Results from the present method are compared with Wavier-Stokes solutions. The present results are in good agreement with Wavier-Stokes solutions. They show that the new technique can provide improved predictions of heating rates and skin friction predictions for preliminary design of vehicles where shear layers and entropy layer swallowing are importantfor for preliminary design.

  • Development and validation of performance analysis model for dual combustion ramjet engines has been performed. A typical performance model for hypersonic intake flow and supersonic mixing and combustion was demonstrated; Taylor-Maccoll equation for coaxial intakes and a quasi-one dimensional reacting flow analysis with CEA chemical equilibrium for supersonic combustion. The results, thermodynamic data of intake and supersonic combustor were validated with CFD numerical results.

  • To improve the resolution of complex flow field features, grid adaptation scheme of Anderson has been revised, which was based on the Poisson grid generator of Thompson. Anderson's original scheme adapts the grid to solution automatically, but if flow field is more or less complex, then the adaptivity is weak. So the technique of using threshold which is used in unstructured grid system is adopted. The regions of large variation in the solution are marked by marking function which has the property of total variation of the solution, and these regions have same values of weight but other regions are neglected. This updated method captures shocks clearly and sharpy. Four examples are demonstrated, (1) Hypersonic flow past a blunt body, (2) High speed inlet analysis, (3) Supersonic flow of M=1.4 over a 4% biconvex airfoil in a channel, (4) Hypersonic shock-on-shock interaction at M=8.03.

  • In hypersonic aircraft, increase of aerodynamic and engine heat lead thermal load in airframe. It could lead structural change of aircraft's component and malfunctioning. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon fuels which are able to absorb the heat load by undergoing endothermic reactions. In this study, we investigated the method of measuring the heat sink of catalyst by using exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene as a fuel in a packed bed flow reactor similar to the actual reaction conditions.

  • The study of nonlinear gas transport in rarefied condition or associated with the microscale length of the geometry has emerged as an interesting topic in recent years. Along with the DSMC method, several fluid dynamic models that come under the general category of the moment method or the Chapman-Enskog method have been used for this type of problem. In the present study, on the basis of Eu's generalized hydrodynamics, computational models for diatomic gases are developed. The rotational nonequilibrium effect is included by introducing excess normal stress associated with the bulk viscosity of the gas. The new models are applied to study the one-dimensional shock structure and the multi-dimensional rarefied hypersonic flow about a blunt body. The results indicate that the bulk viscosity plays a considerable role in fundamental flow problems such as the shock structure and shear flow. An excellent agreement with experiment is observed for the inverse shock density thickness.

  • Various jet engines (Turbine engine family and RAM Jet engine) have been developed for high speed aircrafts. but their application to hypersonic flight is restricted by principle problems such as increase of total pressure loss and thermal stress. Therefore, the development of next generation propulsion system for hypersonic aircraft is a very important subject in the aerospace engineering field, SCRAM Jet engine based on a key technology, Supersonic Combustion. is supposed as the best choice for the hypersonic flight. Since Supersonic Combustion requires both rapid ignition and stable flame holding within supersonic air stream, much attention have to be given on the mixing state between air stream and fuel flow. However. the wider diffusion of fuel is expected with less total pressure loss in the supersonic air stream. So. in this study the direction of fuel injection is inclined 30 degree to downstream and the total pressure of jet is controlled for lower penetration height than thickness of boundary layer. Under these flow configuration both streams, fuel and supersonic air stream, would not mix enough. To spread fuel wider into supersonic air an aerodynamic force, baroclinic torque, is adopted. Baroclinic torque is generated by a spatial misalignment between pressure gradient (shock wave plane) and density gradient (mixing layer). A wedge is installed in downstream of injector orifice to induce an oblique shock. The schlieren optical visualization from side transparent wall and the total pressure measurement at exit cross section of combustor estimate how mixing is enhanced by the incidence of shock wave into supersonic boundary layer composed by fuel and air. In this study non-combustionable helium gas is injected with total pressure 0.66㎫ instead of flammable fuel to clarify mixing process. Mach number 1.8. total pressure O.5㎫, total temperature 288K are set up for supersonic air stream.

  • A variant of the magnetoplasma jet engine (magjet) is here proposed for airbreathing flight in the hypersonic regime. As shown in Figure 1, the engine consists of two distinct ducts: the high-speed duct, in which power is added electromagnetically to the incoming air by a momentum addition device, and the fuel cell duct in which the flow stagnation temperature is reduced by extracting energy through the use of a magnetoplas-madynamic (MPD) generator. The power generated is then used to accelerate the flow exiting the fuel cells with a fraction bypassed to the high-speed duct. The analysis is performed using a quasi one-dimensional model neglecting the Hall and ion slip effects, and fix-ing the fuel cell efficiency to 0.6. Results obtained show that the specific impulse of the magjet is at least equal to and up to 3 times the one of a turbojet, ram-jet, or scramjet in their respective flight Mach number range. Should the air stagnation temperature in the fuel cell compartment not exceed 5 times the incoming air static temperature, the maximal flight Mach number possible would vary between 6.5 and 15 for a magnitude of the ratio between the Joule heating and the work interaction in the MPD generator varied between 0.25 and 0.01, respectively. Increasing the mass flow rate ratio between the high speed and fuel cell ducts from 0.2 to 20 increases the engine efficiency by as much as 3 times in the lower supersonic range, while resulting in a less than 10% increase for a flight Mach number exceeding 8.
