  • We investigated elementary school students' knowledge, behavior, experience and preference of education method related to food safety in order to provide basic information for food safety educational program. A survey study was conducted with 569, fourth and sixth grade students, from two schools in Seoul and Ulsan. Students were asked thirty-two questions regarding food safety knowledge, behavior and experiences as well as their attitude to food safety class and preference for teaching method. The data was analyzed for the frequency analysis, t-test, chi-square test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation using the SPSS/Windows. Results indicated that 91.9 percent of the respondents did not know what unsanitary food is. 67 percent of the respondents did not know the proper method of hand washing. Although the students' level of knowledge and behavior associated with food safety was low, there was meaningful correlation(r =.184, p<.01) between knowledge and behavior. Surprisingly, students in higher grade did not demonstrate an exceeding food safety knowledge and behavior. More than 50 percent of the subjects did not have food safety education either at home or school. 60 percent of the respondents interested in food safety and the majority recognized that a food safety education is needed. Students want to learn about unsanitary food(34.1%), foodborne illness(29.7%), food selection and storage method(21.3%), and personal hygiene(11.2%) through game, role play, and practice in real situation. These results suggest that development of food safety education program is needed through the elementary school year and the education program must include fun activities in which students can participate.

  • Three books of home economics were published in Korea 1907 and approved as textbooks for women's education by Korean government from 1908 to 1910 and by the Choseon Government-General from 1912 to 1914. The textbooks contained modern knowledge about housing which was focused on hygine matters and most systematic among the knowledge of that time. The original book of the three was Sinsen Gajunhak(新選家政學) by Shimoda Yutako published in Japan 1990 after her surveying western home economics knowledge. It means the modern housing knowledge educated in Korea around 1910 was affected by Western modern thinking in home economics field that gave the responsibility of housing cleanness for family members' health to housewives. So the knowledge even made the educated women to practice their learning only as wives, which was still traditional.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the health segment of the 7th national physical education curriculum in an effort to grasp the state of oral health education in the school curriculum. And it's also meant to investigate the relationship between oral health education and the oral health awareness of some high schoolers to check into any possible problems with oral health education as part of health education. The subjects in this study were 240 students from two different girls' high schools in Seoul, on whom a survey was conducted to find out their oral health knowledge, behavior and awareness. And the health category of the current P.E. curriculum announced by the Ministry of Education was analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: Oral health education provided by the high schools as part of health education in P.E. class wasn't linked to P.E. theories and practice. The weight of oral health education was extremely small in the health segment, and there was no sequence, continuity and integration among the content systems of oral health education for different grades. When some high schoolers were investigated, they weren't properly oral health conscious, though it was very important for students to receive oral health education to prevent and manage dental diseases. And they didn't consequently take care of their own oral health. Future research efforts should be channeled from diverse angles into developing oral health education curriculums to bolster school oral health education to improve national oral health.

  • This study was performed to analyze children's perceptions and practice levels according to gender and obesity status using a dietary life safety index. A national survey was conducted on fifth grade children (n = 2,400), who were selected using three-stage stratified cluster sampling from 16 provinces. The average height was 144.8 cm, and weight was 38.8 kg. The average body mass index was 18.4 kg/$m^2$ and underweight, overweight, and obese children were identified using the 2009 KHNANES cutoff values, which were 5.3%, 10%, and 5.9%, respectively. The perception and practice scores for hand-washing prior to eating were high and the score for willing to buy at a clean store was also high. However, students answered that the hygiene level of food stores near the school was poor. More students skipped breakfast than lunch or dinner. The frequency scores for fruit and vegetables were significantly higher for girls than those for boys. Students had a good understanding of nutrition labeling but did not frequently check the label. Seventy-five percent of the students tried to avoid high calorie foods with low nutritional value, but only 40% had the appropriate knowledge about high calorie foods with low nutritional value. Girls had better dietary life perception and practice levels than those of boys. No differences in perception or practice levels were observed based on obesity status. Nutrition education on the importance of eating breakfast and having accurate knowledge on nutrition labeling and high calorie foods with low nutritional value is needed. Behavior-centered education should be implemented to improve the perceptions and practice level of student's dietary life.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the teaching efficiency of clinical training for dental hygiene students in Gyeonggi Province. The subjects in this study were 371 dental hygiene juniors in seven different colleges in Gyeonggi Province, on whom a self-administered survey was conducted. The collected data were analyzed with a SPSS WIN 12.0 program, and the findings of the study were as follows: 1. The teaching efficiency of clinical training that the dental hygiene students undergone was on the average. As for evaluation of the factors of teaching efficiency, they gave the highest marks to the role model factor(3.40). 2. The size of the institutions where they received clinical training made no statistically significant differences to the teaching efficiency of their clinical training. The university hospitals ranked first in professional knowledge, one of the sub-directory of teaching efficiency, and the gap between them and the others was statistically significant(p=.005). 3. Concerning links between satisfaction level with the major and view of teaching efficiency, stronger satisfaction with the major led to better perception of teaching efficiency(p=.001). Among the subdirectory of teaching efficiency, that made statistically significant differences to view of interpersonal skills, performance as a supporter, fair evaluation, academic organization skills(p=.005), encouragement and support, teaching methods, professional academic knowledge(p=.001), communicative competency, performance as a role model and cooperation with the staff of dental clinics(p=.000). 4. There were no statistically significant gaps in teaching efficiency according to teaching styles. Among the sub-directory of teaching efficiency, statistically significant differences were found only in encouragement and support(p=.005). The above-mentioned findings suggest that the teaching efficacy of the clinical training was approximately on the average, and that a better satisfaction with the major led to a higher teaching efficacy. Therefore a wide variety of teaching methods and systematic training programs should be developed to boost the quality of clinical training to improve its teaching efficacy.

Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 483 dental hygienists in Gwangju from September 13 to October 12, 2013. Data were analyzed by frequency analysis, chi-square test, t-test, and multiple logistic regression analysis using SPSS 18.0 program. Musculo-skeletal pain severity was classified from 1 to 5 by PRECEDE model. The questionnaire consisted of six questions of the general characteristics of the subjects, one question of musculo-skeletal pain prevalence, one question of body part musculo-skeletal pain prevalence, one question of subjective health status, three questions of activities of daily living, six questions of working environment, one question of musculoskeletal system diseases knowledge, two questions of social support, two questions of education experience and data use method, and five questions of necessity of health education. Results: The prevalence rate of musculo-skeletal pain within a year was 83.9% and 22.8% of the dental hygienists complained of severe pain. The odds ratio of moderate pain severity was 1.99(95% CI, 1.10-3.60) and the odds ratio of unhealthiness was 3.27 (95% CI, 1.35-7.94). The odds ratio of pain severity in those working for 4-6 years was 0.21(95% CI, 0.08-0.57). The odds ratio of pain severity in those practicing 6-10 scaling cases per day was 0.33(95% CI, 0.17-0.65). The odds ratio of pain severity in wrist turning and bending was 3.56(95% CI, 1.19-10.62). Conclusions: The muscolu-skeletal pain severity in the dental hygienists was closely associated with subjective health condition, work duration, the number of scaling practice activity, and a treatment posture. Regular physical checkup for the dental hygienists will improve the musculo-skeletal pain due to scaling practice.

  • Background: Nowadays, dental health problems in Indonesia are still quite high. It is one of which influenced by low public awareness of the importance of maintaining the health of teeth and mouth that can be measured by toothbrushing behavior. Based on the results of RISKESDAS 2018, only 2.8 percent of the population has a proper toothbrushing behavior. Behavior tends to form at age 6 to 12 years. At this age, children begin to develop habits that tend to settle until adulthood, including toothbrushing behavior. Social cognitive theory is a theory of behavioral change that explains that behavioral changes are influenced by the environment, personal, behavior where these three factors influence each other. This study aims to identify changes in the dental behavior of second grades students before and after the joint toothbrushing at school for 21 days. Methods: A pre-experimental study-design was conducted on elementary school by pre-post treatment method where there are 2 classes that get intervention and 2 other classes as control. A joint toothbrush is performed every morning before the school activities begin. Before and after the joint toothbrushing, all classes are given questionnaires to see if there are any changes in behavior seen through knowledge, attitudes, and practice. Results: Respondent group showed increasement on their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors towards toothbrushing. In contrast, the control groups showed no significant differences in the 3 factors. Conclusion: In this study the education of toothbrushing through environmental changes is quite effective in elementary school children. Insights into the benefits of this program and refinements of optimally targeted intervention, including longitudinal studies are needed to improve the results.
