  • Nanosized CeO$_2$Powders were prepared under high temperature and pressure conditions by precipitation from metal nitrates with aqueous potassium hydroxide. Spherical shape of CeO$_2$powder was obtained at 175$^{\circ}C$ for 6h. TEM and X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the synthesized particle was crystalline. The average size and size distribution of the synthesized particles were below 30 nm and narrow, respectively. In addition, the effects of synthesis parameters under hydrothermal process are discussed.

  • In this paper, the ZnS nanoparticles were synthesized according to the process conditions of hydrothermal synthesis. When the molar ratio of Zn to S was 1:1.2, it was confirmed that it had a cubic single phase and a high crystal phase. After the molar ratio is fixed, hydrothermal synthesis was conducted at $180^{\circ}C$ for 24, 36, 72 and 96 h in order to confirm the structural change with the change of hydrothermal synthesis times. As the hydrothermal synthesis times increased, the particle size increased. The hydrothermal synthesized particle size for 72 h was considered to be suitable for sintering. The ZnS ceramic had a density of 99.7% and an excellent transmittance of ~70% in the long-wavelength region.

  • Nanocrystalline ceria powders were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate solution without a precipitating agent. A systematic investigation of the effect of hydrothermal temperature and react ion time on the physical properties of the product powders was carried out. When the hydrothermal temperature was increased, the product ceria powders exhibited larger crystallite size with higher yield. Increasing reaction time produced more crystalline ceria powders attributed to further hydrothermal reactions and structural rearrangement. The physical properties of ceria powders can be control led by adjusting the hydrothermal conditions.

  • The nano-array of the vertically aligned rod-like particles grown on ZnO coated glass-substrates was obtained via hydrothermal process. ZnO thin film coatings were prepared on the glass substrates using a MOD (metallorganic deposition) dip-coating method with zinc chloride dihydrate as starting material and 2-ethylhexanol as solvent. ZnO nanorods were synthesized on the seeded substrates by hydrothermal method at $80^{\circ}C$ using zinc-nitrate hexahydrate as a Zn source and sodium hydroxide as a mineralizer. Under the hydrothermal condition, the rod-like nanocrystals were easily attaching on the already ZnO seeded (coated) glass surface. It has been shown that the hydrothermal synthesis parameters are key factors in the nucleation and growth of ZnO crystallites. By controlling of hydrothermal parameters, the ZnO particulate morphology could be easily tailored. Rod-shaped ZnO arrays on the glass substrates consisted of elongated crystals having 6-fold symmetry were predominantly developed at high Zn precursor concentration in the pH range 7~11.

  • The solid-state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD) has promoted the development and application for biogas production from biomass which operate a high solid content feedstock, as higher than 15% of total solids. However, the digested byproduct of SS-AD can be used as a fertilizer or as solid fuel, but it has serious problems: high moisture content and poor dewaterability. The organic residue from SS-AD has to be improved to address these problems and to make it a useful alternative energy source. Hydrothermal carbonization was investigated for conversion of the organic residue from the SS-AD of livestock waste to solid fuels. The effects of hydrothermal carbonization were evaluated by varying the reaction temperatures within the range of $180-240^{\circ}C$. Hydrothermal carbonization increased the calorific value through the reduction of the hydrogen and oxygen contents of the solid fuel, in addition to its drying performance. Therefore, after the hydrothermal carbonization, the H/C and O/C atomic ratios decreased through the chemical conversion. Thermogravimatric analysis provided the changed combustion characteristics due to the improvement of the fuel properties. As a result, the hydrothermal carbonization process can be said to be an advantageous technology in terms of improving the properties of organic waste as a solid-recovered fuel product.

  • Activated alumina was fabricated with aluminum hydroxide in this study. High-purity alumina gel and boehmite were prepared from aluminum hydroxide by a hydrothermal process and fired to activate alumina having a surface area of 380 ~ 480 $m^2/g$ with less loss of ignition. The aging and drying condition during the fabrication process affected the loss of ignition, the sedimentation time of the alumina suspension, as well as the surface area of the activated alumina. For pellet-type activated alumina, the pre-fired alumina gel and boehmite were press-formed and fired at $400^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$ for 6 h, respectively. The fired pellets showed a low density of 2.0 ~ 2.2 $g/cm^3$ with 20% firing shrinkage and sufficient handling strength. In this study, a new fabrication process for high-quality activated alumina with aluminum hydroxide is introduced. The effects of the processing parameters on the activated alumina properties are also examined.

  • Submicron nickel powders were prepared from aqueous solution under hydrothermal condition. The experimental conditions including the types of protective agents, concentration of the solution and the pH were studied in detail. Starting concentration of nickel ion is a dominant factor affecting particle size. It was shown that the subsequent addition of Poly Vinyl Pyrrolidone(PVP) and Sodium Dodecyle Sulfate(SDS) can help to disperse the nickel powder. X-ray diffraction and SEM were employed to characterize the products.

  • Ultraviolet (UV) sensors are widely applied in industrial and military fields such as environmental monitoring, medicine and astronomy. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is considered as one of the promising materials for UV sensors because of its ease of fabrication, wide bandgap (3.37 eV) and high chemical stability. In this study, we used the hydrothermal growth of ZnO to form two types of ZnO nanostructures (Nanoflower and nanorod) and applied them to a UV sensor. To improve the performance of the UV sensor, the hydrothermal growth was used in a two-step process for fabricating ZnO hierarchical nanostructures. The fabricated ZnO hierarchical nanostructure improved the performance of the UV sensor by increasing the ratio of volume to surface area and the number of nanojunctions compared to one-step hydrothermal grown ZnO nanostructure. The UV sensor based on the ZnO hierarchical nanostructure had a maximum photocurrent of 44 ㎂, which is approximately 3 times higher than that of a single nanostructure. The UV sensor fabrication method presented in this study is simple and based on the hydrothermal solution process, which is advantageous for large-area production and mass production; this provides scope for extensive research in the field of UV sensors.

  • The mesoporous metal organic framework structure of Ni-BTC was successfully synthesized in a low temperature and short operation time via hydrothermal synthesis process. Such operational route virtuously consumed less electrical and thermal energy. It proved time saving along with acceptable product yield (38%). The product was characterized through FESEM, FT-IR, XRD and $N_2$ gas adsorption measurement. Hightemperature stability of synthesized MOF was gauged by diffraction indexing of XRD patterns of as synthesized and heat treated samples of MOFs. The mathematically calculated particle size of Ni-BTC was found to be 42nm.
