  • This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of the field-saturated hydraulic conductivity( $K_{fs}$ ) and matric flux potential(ф$_{m}$) measured by the Guelph Permeameter at the Backokpo watershed in the Han river and at the Bangdong watershed in the Keum river. And the Alpha (a) value which is the ratio of $K_{fs}$ to ф$_{m}$ were determined and the a values along with the defined soil series could be utilized to classify the soil in the Korean watershed into the SCS hydrologic soil groups.ups.

  • The development of a basin-wide runoff analysis model is to analysis monthly and daily hydrologic runoff components including surface runoff, subsurface runoff, return flow, etc. at key operation station in the targeted basin. h short-term water demand forecasting technology will be developed fatting into account the patterns of municipal, industrial and agricultural water uses. For the development and utilization of runoff analysis model, relevant basin information including historical precipitation and river water stage data, geophysical basin characteristics, and water intake and consumptions needs to be collected and stored into the hydrologic database of Integrated Real-time Water Information System. The well-known SSARR model was selected for the basis of continuous daily runoff model for forecasting short and long-term natural flows.

  • The specification of surface vegetation is essential for simulating actual evapotranspiration of water resources. The availability of land cover maps based on remotely collected data makes the specification of surface vegetation easier. The spatial resolution of hydrologic models rarely matches the spatial scales of the vegetation data needed, and remotely collected vegetation data often are upscaled up to conform to the hydrologic model scale. In this study, the effects of the grid scale of of surface vegetation on the results of actual evapotranspiration were examined. The results show that the coarser resolution causes larger error in relative terms and that a more realistic description of area-averaged vegetation nature and characteristics needs to be considered when calculating actual evapotranspiration.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an efficient model for the least cost design of multi-site detention systems. The IDP (Incremental Dynamic Programming) model for optimal design is composed of two sub-models : hydrologic-hydraulic model and optimization model. The objective function of IDP is the sum of costs ; acquisition cost of the land, construction cost of detention basin and pumping system. Model inputs include channel characteristics, hydrologic parameters, design storm, and cost function. The model is applied to the Jung-Rang Cheon basin in Seoul, a watershed with cetention basins in multiple branching channels. The application results show that the detention system can be designed reasonably for various conditions and the model can be applied to multi-site detention system design.

  • This study examined characteristic differences by the rainfall direction on the runoff responses. The directional characteristics of hydrological components in a basin were quantified by von Mises distribution. The runoff hydrograph was derived using the result of convolution integration of each distribution and this hydrograph was compared with GIUH model and observed data. As a result, it was found that runoff response by rainfall direction was more similar the observed rainfall-runoff data than the runoff result using GIUH model. These results implies that runoff modeling could be improved by considering directional components in hydrologic analysis. This study would be helpful to reduce uncertainties of hydrologic analysis considering a non-linearity of rainfall-runoff process by the rainfall direction.

  • Growing needs for efficient management of water resources urge integrated management of whole basin. As one of the tools for supporting above tasks, this study aims to indicate a hydrologic model that can simulate the streamflow discharges at some control points located both upper and down stream of dams. For the development and utilization of non analysis model, relevant basin information including historical precipitation and river water stage data, geophysical basin characteristics, and water intake and consumptions needs to be collected and stored into the hydrologic database of Integrated Real-Time Water Information System. The well-known SSARR model was selected for basis of continuous daily runoff model for forecasting short and long-term national river flows in this paper.

  • In Jeju island, the surface runoff characteristics are quite different from those of inland. Most of streams show dried characteristics by means of large portion of recharge which goes to the deep aquifer. For this reason, the accurate estimation of hydrologic components by using watershed model like SWAT is very difficult. On the other hand, the integrated SWAT-MODFLOW model is able to simulate the complex runoff structure including stream-aquifer interaction, spatial-temporal groundwater recharge and so on. The comprehensive results of Pyoseon region in Jeju island show that the amount of groundwater discharge to stream is very small, but it might be added to the discharge into the sea. Statistical analysis shows that SWAT-MODFLOW's results represent better than SWAT's. Also, SWAT-MODFLOW produces a reasonable water budget which shows a quite similar pattern of observed one. This result proves that the integrated SWAT-MODFLOW can be used as a proper tool for hydrologic analysis of entire Jeju island.

  • In this study, the method of estimating hydrologic information (water depth, submerged period etc.) on the proper selection of construction point and scale as well as vegetation type suggested for the design of natural riparian rehabilitation structure. Long-term comprehensive watershed model SWAT-K(Korea) was applied to this purpose. Flow duration analysis was conducted to analyze the hydrologic characteristics of Pyungchang watershed at which the 'bangtul' construction method was tested. For this purpose 20 years (1989-2008) rainfall runoff analysis was carried out. Based on the simulated daily streamflow data, flow duration curve was made to analyze the flow characteristics, and the water depth hydrograph was made to analyze the water depth distribution at the cross section. Finally, the information for the selection of proper vegetation according to the submerged period is suggested.

  • The characteristics of drinking groundwater quality at Chung Cheong Nam Do was analyzed by investigating the 3,086 groundwater data which were carried out the water quality inspection from Jan. 1998 to Dec. 1998. It was found that all the mean concentration of items was not over the drinking water quality standard except Zn at Yeongee area. The highest mean concentration of nitrate was $8.2 mg/{\ell}$ at Hongsung area. And the mean concentrations of nitrate and ammonium at Sucheon, Yesan, Yeongee were relatively higher. It was considered that the groundwater of that area was contaminated by breeding livestock as farm pollutants. The mean concentrations of chloride, hardness and evaporation residual at coastal regions were higher than inland regions. Especially the mean concentration of chloride was 2.5 times higher. It was considered that the groundwater at coastal regions was affected by seawater. It was found that the correlation between Fe and Mn was relatively high(r=0.776) and the correlation between hardness and evaporation residual was very high(r=0.983). The rainfall series and detection rate of E-coli had the hydrologic persistence. The correlation between the detection rate and rainfall series over 150 mm was very high (r=0.9146). Therefore it is surely required to control the groundwater sanitation in the rainy season.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze hydrologic recessiioon curve at the outlet of the ssangchi basin. For the development of recession equation, the initial discharge(Q0) and the recession parameters are estimated . It is shown that the accurate estimates of recession curve is easily obtained . The obtained parameters can be related to the basin characteristics, drainge area, and the total stream length so that they can be used for the development of the regional low flow estimation model.
