In order to investigate hydrological behavior of the east coast snowfall in February 2014, this study analyzed the changes of the hydrological components due to the snowmelt in the Ssangcheon watershed nearby Sokcho city. The temporal changes of hydrological components through snowfall and snowmelt processes were simulated using SWAT-MODFLOW. As a result of the analysis, snow accumulated until February is fully melted from the late March, 2014, and the stream discharge of April is more than doubled compared to the case of not considering snowmelt. The soil moisture also increased by up to 21 % due to the melting and the groundwater level rose by about 40 cm until the end of April. Thus, the heavy snowfall in February 2014 is considered to play an important role in securing water resources in this region.
Changes in land cover or land use, such as changes in forest area, can cause changes in water and energy circulation, ultimately affecting overall hydrological cycle including stream flow, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and base flow. In this study, the changes of the hydrological processes over the past long period were simulated by using large-scale surface hydrologic model along with various soil, land use, vegetation, and meteorological data. For this purpose, this study simulated and evaluated the changes in the hydrological cycle for the past 50 years (1955-2010) in East Asia including China, Japan and South Korea. In particular, this study used the land cover maps which can properly reflect the vegetation condition for each simulation period. As results, the mean runoff ratio of China was estimated to be 47.0% over the entiree period, 62.7% in Japan and 49.4% in South Korea. The mean soil moisture of China was estimated to be 22.2%, 35.6% in Japan and 23.9% in South Korea. Finally, the mean evapotranspiration rate was estimated to be 52.7% in China, 37.3% in Japan and 50.4% in South Korea. Especially, in China, the hydrological cycle was found to be changed very much for the entire simulation period. However, in Japan, the hydrological cycle was found to be very stable for the entire simulation period. The hydrological cycle was also found to become stable mainly due to the stabilization of the vegetation.

The main purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of urbanization on the groundwater system in the Gap river basin, a sub-basin of the Geum river basin. In this analysis, we constructed a water cycle analysis system using SWAT. Then, changes in soil moisture and recharge rate due to land-use changes were investigated using different land-use data estimated in 1975 and 2000. Simulation results were analyzed for both draught (2001) and flood (2003) years to take into account different hydrologic conditions. It was shown that recharge rate in the most urbanized area (31% change) was reduced by 17% for both periods due to urbanization. The results also indicated that soil moisture decrease due to urbanization was more sensitive in the drought year (2001) than in the flood year (2003), We expect that the results of this research can contribute to providing useful information for managing urban rivers considering river restoration and flood control.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the applicability of the HSPEXP expert system for the calibration of the Hydrological Simulation Program - Fortran (HSPF) for the study watershed. HSPEXP offers advice to the modeler, suggesting parameter changes that might result in better representation of a river basin and provides explanations supporting the recommended parameter changes. The study watershed, Sancheong, is located within the Nakdong River Basin and having the size of $1,072.4km^2$. Input data for the HSPF model were obtained from the landuse map, digital elevation map, meteorological data and others. Water flow data from 2006 to 2008 were used for calibration and from 2009 to 2010 were for validation. Using the HSPEXP expert system, hydrological parameters were adjusted based on total volume, then low flows, storm flows, and finally seasonal flows. For the calibration and validation period, all the HSPEXP model performance criteria were satisfied.

Hydrologic responses to the 4September 2010 $M_W$ 7.1 and 22 February 2011 $M_W$ 6.2 Canterbury earthquakes ranged from near instantaneous co-seismic liquefaction and changes in groundwater levels, to more sustained (days to months) changes in river discharge, spring flow and groundwater level. There was some indication of a sustained change in aquifer properties. This paper presents some of the hydrographs from the September and February events, and compares the response to each event, briefly taking into account the location of the bore relative to each earthquake, together with other factors such as borehole depth. Over the months following the September earthquake, a pattern emerged of relatively short-term responses in the shallow aquifers and in the confined aquifer system, close to the coast. A longer term response appears to have occurred in inland, deep bores, where water levels 12 months after the September event were (in some cases) up to 20 metres higher than would have been expected based on simple modelling (see Figure 3). Some examples of these are highlighted.

The patterns of occurrence of typhoons in North Pacific region are constantly changing with the increase of temperature in sea surface and the occurrence of El Nino and La Nina and changes of their development caused by global warming. In addition, alterations of flow regimes caused by large-scale hydraulic construction projects in the past few years and changes in precipitation patterns caused by climate change have imposed increased stress on hydroecology while the indiscreet utilization of water resources has a negative environmental impact on the water flows in the natural rivers and streams and hydroecological structures. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of altered hydrologic regime on stream and riparian ecosystems that are most vulnerable to climate variability and extremes such as typhoons.
In this study, Hydrologic regime alterations(magnitude, magnitude and duration of annual extreme, frequency and duration of high and low pulse, rate and frequency of water condition changes, Range of Variability Approach) were analyzed by using Indicators of Hydrologic Alterations at the 11 major multi-purpose dam. The analysis result of the magnitude of monthly water conditions during drought season, inflow was $6.38m^3/sec{\sim}39.84m^3/sec$ and outflow was $20.36m^3/sec{\sim}49.43m^3/sec$, was increased $1.84%{\sim}200.98%$. The analysis result of the magnitude of monthly water conditions during flood season, inflow was from $79.06m^3/sec{\sim}137.12m^3/sec$ and outflow was from $65.32m^3/sec{\sim}80.16m^3/sec$, was decreased from $18.19%{\sim}40.39%$. The analysis result of the magnitude and duration of annual extreme, 1-day minimum was increased $82.86%{\sim}2,950%$, but 1-day maximum was decreased $34.78%{\sim}83.96%$. The analysis result of the frequency and duration of high and low pulse, low pulse count was decreased $29.67%{\sim}99.07%$ and high pulse count was also decreased $4.6%{\sim}92.35%$ after dam operation. Hydrograph rise rate was decreased $15.84%{\sim}79.31%$ and fall rate was $1.97%{\sim}107.10%$. RVA of 1-day minimum was increased $0.60{\sim}2.67$, also RVA of 1-day maximum was decreased $0.50{\sim}1.00$.
The Yeongsan River, one of the four major rivers in Korea, shows the highest degree of water pollution compared to the other major rivers. The construction and opening of two weirs, Seungchon and Juksan, induced fluctuations in the hydrologic conditions and water quality of the river. To investigate the water quality changes caused by the opening of the weir in 2017, this study analyzed the water quality data using the non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the three-dimensional spatiotemporal plots. The non-parametric statistical test results showed that the concentration of all parameters has increased after 2017 at a significance level of 0.05. For the parameters that showed the highest degree of change, chlorophyll-a and suspended solids, the median values have increased by more than 30% after weir opening. Visual analysis additionally showed the spatial changes in the Yeongsan River. Generally, the sites above the Seungchon weir showed higher pollution levels than those above the Juksan weir. In time series, visual analysis results also showed the trend of rising concentration for all water quality parameters, indicating that the opening of two weirs had a significant effect on the change in water quality of the Yeongsan River.

In recent decades, extreme events have been significantly increased over the Korean Peninsula due to climate variability and climate change. The potential changes in hydrologic cycle associated with the extreme events increase uncertainty in water resources planning and designing. For these reasons, a reliable changing point analysis is generally required to better understand regime changes in hydrologic time series at watershed scale. In this study, a hierarchical changing point analysis approach that can apply in a watershed scale is developed by combining the existing changing point analysis method and hierarchical Bayesian method. The proposed model was applied to the selected stations that have annual rainfall data longer than 40 years. The results showed that the proposed model can quantitatively detect the shift in precipitation in the middle of 1990s and identify the increase in annual precipitation compared to the several decades prior to the 1990s. Finally, we explored the changes in precipitation and sea level pressure in the context of large-scale climate anomalies using reanalysis data, for a given change point. It was concluded that the identified large-scale patterns were substantially different from each other.
The objective of this research is to analyze the hydrological environment changes in Daechung Dam Basin due to the global warming. GCM simulation results are used to predict the possible changes in precipitation and temperature. The changes of potential evapotranspiration, soil moisture and runoff due to the changes of precipitation and temperature are analyzed using a conceptual water balance model. From the simulation results using the water balance model for lx$CO_2$ and 2x$CO_2$ situations, it has been found that the runoff would decrease in Winter, but increase in Summer and Fall due to the global warming. Therefore, it is predicted that the frequency of drought and flood occurrences in Daechung Dam Basin would be increased in 2x$CO_2$ condition.
