  • In this study, we proposed a standard model for the design, construction and demonstration of the technology development and substantiation of small hydrogen powered vessel in order to respond to the alternative fuel-using vessel market that requires the use of low-carbon/carbon-free fuel as a greenhouse gas reduction measure. The hydrogen fuel cell-based electric propulsion system developed through this is optimized through performance and durability tests on the land-based test site (LBTS), and the electric propulsion system applied to this result is mounted on a small hydrogen propulsion vessel and operated. Simultaneously, through the digital twin technology between the LBTS and the hydrogen-propelled vessel on the sea, the technology that can predict and diagnose the problems that can occur in the electric propulsion system of the vessel is applied to carry out the empirical study of the hydrogen-propelled vessel. In addition, we propose a commercialization model by analyzing the economic feasibility of the demonstration vessel.

  • Comparing with the large containment, the gas can not flow freely within the local compartment due to the small volume of the compartment in case of serious accident, which affects the hydrogen flow distribution, and it will determines the location where high concentration occurs in compartment. In this paper, hydrogen distribution and possible hydrogen risk in the vessel under the different conditions are investigated. The results show that when the initial gas momentum is increased, the ability of gas enters into the upper region of the vessel will be strengthened, and the hydrogen volume fraction in the upper region of the vessel is higher. Comparing with horizontal source direction, when source direction is vertically towards upper space, hydrogen is more likely to accumulate in the upper region of the vessel. With the increasing of steam mass flow, the dilution effect of steam on the hydrogen volume fraction will be strengthened, while the pressure in the vessel is also increased. When steam flow is decreased, the hydrogen explosion risk is higher in the vessel. The experiment data can provide technical support for the validation of the CFD software and the mitigation of hydrogen risk in the containment compartment.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional hydrogen absorption model is developed to precisely study hydrogen absorption reaction and resultant heat and mass transport phenomena in metal hydride hydrogen storage vessels. The 3D model is first experimentally validated against the temperature evolution data available in the literature. In addition to model validation, the detailed simulation results shows that at the initial absorption stage, the vessel temperature and H/M ratio distributions are uniform throughout the entire vessel, indicating that the hydrogen absorption is so efficient during the early hydriding process and thus local cooling effect is not influential. On the other hand, nonuniform distributions are predicted at the latter absorption stage, which is mainly due to different degrees of cooling between the vessel wall and core regions. This numerical study provides the fundamental understanding of detailed heat and mass transfer phenomena during hydrogen absorption process and further indicates that efficient design of storage vessel and cooling system is critical to achieve fast hydrogen charging and high hydrogen storage efficiency.

  • As the supply of hydrogen charging stations for hydrogen supply accelerates due to the hydrogen economy revitalization policy, the risk of accidents is also increasing. Since most hydrogen explosion accidents lead to major accidents, it is very important to secure safety when using hydrogen energy. In order to utilize hydrogen energy, it is essential to secure the safety of hydrogen storage containers used for production, storage, and transportation of liquid hydrogen. In this paper, in order to evaluate the structural safety of a hydrogen-filled pressure vessel, the behavioral characteristics of gas pressure were analyzed by finite element analysis. SA-372 Grade J / Class 70 was used for the material of the pressure vessel, and a hexahedral mesh was applied in the analysis model considering only the 1/4 shape because the pressure vessel is axisymmetric. A finite element analysis was performed at the maximum pressure using a hydrogen gas pressure vessel, and the von Mises stress, deformation, and strain energy density of the vessel were observed.

  • One of the technical methods to increase the volumetric energy density of hydrogen is to pressurize the gaseous hydrogen and then contain it in a rigid vessel. Especially for automotive systems, the compressed hydrogen storage can be found in cars as well as at refueling stations. During the charging the pressurized hydrogen into a vessel, the temperature increases with the amount of stored hydrogen in the vessel. The temperature of the vessel should be controlled to be less than a limitation for ensure stability of material. Therefore, the accurate estimation of temperature is of significance for safely storing the hydrogen. In this work, three well-known cubic equations of state (EOSs) were adopted to examine the accuracy in regenerating thermodynamic properties of hydrogen within the temperature and pressure ranges for the compressed hydrogen storage. The formulations representing molar volume, internal energy, enthalpy, and entropy were derived for Redlich-Kwong (RK), Soave-Redlioch-Kwong (SRK), and Peng-Robinson (PR) EOSs. The calculated results using the EOSs were compared with literature data given by NIST. It was revealed that the accuracies of RK and SRK EOSs were satisfactorily compatible and better than the results by PR EOS.

  • The hydrogen storage vessel having a good heat conductivity along with a simple structure and a low cost for these alloys was designed and manufactured, and then its characteristic properties were studied in this study. The various parts in hydrogen storage vessel consisted of copper pipes and stainless steel of 250 mesh reached the setting temperature after 4~5 minutes, which indicated that storage vessel had a good heat conductivity that was required in application. And also the storage vessel had a good property of hydrogen transport considering that the reaction time between hydrogen and rare-earth metal alloys in storage vessel was found to be within 10 min at $18^{\circ}C$ under 10 atmospheric pressure. It showed that the average capacity of discharged hydrogen volume was found to be $120{\ell}$ for $MmNi_{4.5}Mn_{0.5}$ under discharging conditions of $40^{\circ}C{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ at a constant flow rate of $5{\ell}$/min. It was found that the optimum discharging temperature for obtaining an appropriate pressure of 3atm was determined to be $60^{\circ}C$ for $MmNi_{4.5}Mn_{0.5}$ hydrogen storage alloy.

  • A hydrogen liquefaction equipment by direct cooling has been designed and built at KIST. Cool-down characteristics and liquefaction performance of the equipment have been investigated. The hydrogen liquefaction equipment consists of a GM refrigerator, a liquefaction velssel, a radiation shield and a cryostat. It is found that the hydrogen starts to be liquefied in the liquefaction vessel after 40~50 minutes of cool-down from the gas state of 270K. The effect of natural convection phenomena of charged gas in liquefaction vessel on the cool-down characteristics is evaluated by comparing with those in vacuum of liquefaction vessel. It is seen that the cool-down time of a liquefaction vessel is substantially increased in vacuum environment of liquefaction vessel. The experiments have been performed for 1~5 atm of hydrogen pressure to investigate the influence of hydrogen pressure on the liquefaction rate and figure of merit(FOM). It is found that both liquefaction rate and FOM are increased as the charged hydrogen pressure is increased.

  • It was discussed about explosion danger of hydrogen gas experimentally that could be happen during the handling and using. Hydrogen concentration was varied from 10 to 60 vol% for get the explosion characteristics of hydrogen and 5 kinds of cylindrical vessel were used to find the explosion characteristics of hydrogen according to the vessel volume. Initial pressure of hydrogen-air mixture was varied from 0.6 to 2 kg/cm2. Based on the experiment, explosion pressure was most high near the 30vol% of hydrogen and explosion pressure was increased slightly according to the increase of vessel volume but explosion pressure rise rate was decreased. Explosion pressure was increased linearly proportional to the initial pressure of gas mixture.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional hydrogen desorption model is developed to precisely study the hydrogen desorption kinetics and resultant heat and mass transport phenomena in metal hydride hydrogen storage vessels. The metal hydride hydrogen desorption model, i.e. governed by the conservation of mass, momentum, and thermal energy is first experimentally validated against the temperature evolution data measured on a cylindrical $LaNi_5$ metal hydride vessel. The equilibrium pressure used for hydrogen desorption simulations is derived as a function of H/M atomic ratio and temperature based on the experimental data in the literature. The numerical simulation results agree well with experimental data and the 3D desorption model successfully captures key experimental trends during hydrogen desorption process. Both the simulation and experiment display an initial sharp decrease in the temperature mainly caused by relatively slow heat supply rate from the vessel external wall. On the other hand, the effect of heat supply becomes influential at the latter stages, leading to smooth increase in the vessel temperature in both simulation and experiment. This numerical study provides the fundamental understanding of detailed heat and mass transfer phenomena during hydrogen desorption process and further indicates that efficient design of storage vessel and heating system is critical to achieve fast hydrogen discharging performance.

  • In this study, a cryogenic vessel was constructed to maintain and control the safe pressure of liquid hydrogen boil-off gas (BOG), and the numerical analysis was conducted on the development of computational fluid dynamics model inside the high-pressure vessel. An evaluation system was constructed using cryogenic inner and outer containers, pre-cooler, upper flange, and internal high-pressure container. We attempted to analyze the performance of the safety valve by injecting relatively high temperature hydrogen gas to generate BOG gas and quickly control the pressure of the high-pressure vessel up to 10 bar. As a results, the liquid volume fraction decreased with a rapid evaporation, and the pressure distribution increased monotonically inside a high pressure vessel. Additionally, it was found that the time to reach 10 bar was greatly affected by the filling rate of liquid hydrogen.
