As the proliferation of hydrogen electric vehicles accelerates, there is observed diversification in hydrogen refueling station models. This diversification raises safety concerns for different types of stations. This study conducted a quantitative risk assessment of a multi-vehicle hydrogen station, capable of simultaneously refueling cars, buses, and trucks. Utilizing Gexcon's Effects&Riskcurves Software, scenarios of fire and explosion due to hydrogen leaks were assessed. The study calculated the impact distances from radiative heat and explosion overpressure, and measured risks to nearby buildings and populations. The largest impact distance was from fires and explosions at dispensers and high-pressure storage units. High-pressure storage contributes most significantly to personal and societal risk. The study suggests that conservative safety distances and proper protective measures for these facilities can minimize human and material damage in the event of a hydrogen leak.
The focus of this study is to develop a virtual reality program for safe training and virtual reality of hydrogen station. This programme consists of 4 modules such as hydrogen and safety module, hydrogen station module, hypothetical experience module, and accident scenarios module for hydrogen experts. User can experience with principles and operation condition and collect the information of hydrogen station by this programme and can simultaneously study the probable scenarios, emergency response plan/standard operating procedure about hydrogen stations. It makes it possible to educate and safety publicity for the trainee. This virtual reality program will be expected to be helpful for hydrogen station's construction propagation and technology development which is essential for hydrogen energy induction.

According to the "hydrogen economy roadmap" announced recently by the government, fuel cell electric vehicle diffusion and hydrogen refueling station construction are actively being carried out to prepare for the hydrogen economy era. The station will be expanded by introducing various charging station models such as hydrogen complex charging station, package, and mobile. Accordingly, the study on the safety demonstration of the charging station and related regulations should be compromised. The purpose of this study is to collect monitoring data during charging according to the distinct four seasons in Korea, and to use it as safety demonstration data by analyzing the charging status, charging rate and charging time during charging.
Numerical simulation of the natural gas steam reforming process for on-site hydrogen production in a $H_2$ fueling station was conducted on the basis of process material and heat balances. The effects of reforming parameters on the process efficiency of hydrogen production were investigated, and set-point values of each of the parameters to minimize the sizes of unit process equipments and to secure a stable operability of the reforming process were suggested. S/C ratio of the reforming reactants was found to be a crucial parameter in the reforming process mostly governing both the hydrogen production efficiency and the stable operability of the process. The operation of the process was regarded to be stable if the feed water(WR) as a reforming reactant could evaporate completely to dry steam through HRSG. The optimum S/C ratio was 3.0 where the process efficiency of hydrogen production was maximized and the stable operability of the process was secured. The optimum feed rates of natural gas(NGR) and WR as reforming reactants and natural gas(NGB) as a burner fuel were also determined for the hydrogen production rate of $27\;Nm^3/h$.
Commercial hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are charged by compressing gaseous hydrogen to high pressure and storing it in a storage tank in the vehicle. This process causes the temperature of the gas to rise, to ensure the safety to storage tanks, the temperature is limited. Therefore, a heat transfer model is needed to explain this temperature rise. The heat transfer model includes the convective heat transfer phenomenon, and accurate estimation is required. In this study, the convective heat transfer coefficient in the hydrogen fueling process was calculated and compared using various correlation equations considering physical phenomena. The hydrogen fueling process was classified into the fueling line from the dispenser to the tank inlet and the storage tank in the vehicle, and the convective heat transfer coefficients were estimated according to process parameters such as mass flow rate, diameter, temperature and pressure. As a result, in the case of the inside of the filling line, the convective heat transfer coefficient was about 1000 times larger than that of the inside of the storage tank, and in the case of the outside of the filling line, the convective heat transfer coefficient was about 3 times larger than that of the outside of the storage tank. Finally, as a result of a comprehensive analysis of convective heat transfer coefficients in each process, it was found that outside the storage tank was lowest in the entire hydrogen fueling process, thus dominated the heat transfer phenomenon.
In this study, $20\;Nm^3/hr$ scale compact hydrogen generator which can be apply to the hydrogen station was manufactured and tested. The design of $20\;Nm^3/hr$ scale compact hydrogen generator was upgraded on the base of $5\;Nm^3/hr$ scale plate hydrogen generator concept stacking the plate reactors. Ideas for improving system efficiency such as heat recovery from the exhaust, exhaust duct which is especially design for plate type reactor, reinforcement of insulation, enlargement of heat exchange area of reactor, introduction of desulphurizer reactor and PROX rector in a compact design etc. were applied. From the performance test, we can learn that the $20\;Nm^3/hr$ scale compact hydrogen generator can be operated steadily at 100% road condition and the methane conversion of over 94%(at S/C=3.75) was obtained. This result shows that the concept of plate type hydrogen generator can be scale-up to the $20\;Nm^3/hr$ scale and fit for hydrogen generator for on site hydrogen station application.
This study performed qualitative and quantitative risk assessment of equipment for evaluating the protocol of hydrogen refueling stations and suggested measures to improve safety. Hazard and operability study was performed for qualitative risk assessment, and Hy-KoRAM was used for quantitative risk assessment. Through a qualitative risk assessment, additional ventilation devices were installed, simultaneous venting of the storage container was prohibited, and the number of repeated refilling of the evaluation equipment was identified to manage the number of fillings of the container. Through quantitative risk assessment, the area around the device was set as a restricted area when evaluating the station, and measures were suggested to reduce the frequency of accidents.
In this research, the safety trends and technologies of HCNG, a mixture of hydrogen and natural gas, are analyzed. This is an attracting alternative fuels to meet the strengthened automotive exhaust gas emission standards. HCNG is very important opportunities and challenges in that it is available the existing CNG infrastructures, meets the strengthened emission standards, and the technical, social bridge of the coming era of hydrogen. It is essential for the commercialization of HCNG that hydrogen - compressed natural gas blended fuel for use in preparation of various safety considerations included accidents scenario, safety distance, hydrogen attack, ignition sources and fire detectors are examined. Risk assessments also are suggested as one of permission procedure for HCNG filling station.

In response to the recent increase in demand for hydrogen stations, the Ministry of Trade and Industry has enacted and promulgated special notifications to enable the installation of hydrogen stations in the form of the combined complex in existing automotive fuel supply facilities such as LPG, CNG, and gas stations. Hydrogen multi energy filling stations haven't been operated yet in Korea till the establishment of special standards, so it is necessary create special standards by considering all Korean environmental characteristics such as four seasons and daily crossings. In this study, we collected and analyzed the charging data of Ulsan LPG-Hydrogen Multi Fueling Station installed for the first time in Korea. The data are hourly temperature and pressure data from compressors, storage vessels and dispensers. We used the data collected for a year, including the highest temperature and the lowest temperature in Ulsan to compare seasonal characteristics. As a result, it was found that the change of the outside temperature affects the initial temperature of the vehicle's container of the hydrogen car, which finally affects the charging time and the charging speed of the vehicle. There was no effect on vehicle containers because the limit temperature suggested by the Korean Hydrogen Station Standard(KGS FP217) and the US Filling Protocol(SAE J2601) was not exceeded.

We propose an equivalent model of a sintered metal mesh filter calculated by Ergun's equation and polynomial regression for the CFD analysis of breakaway devices at a hydrogen fueling station. CFD analysis of filters that cause high pressure loss is essential because breakaway devices in high-pressure hydrogen conditions require low pressure loss. A differential pressure experiment with a filter was performed in a low-pressure air condition considering similarities. An equivalent model was developed by deriving the resistance value by the polynomial regression using the experimental results. The results of CFD analysis using the equivalent model show that there was almost no error in the operating condition of the breakaway device compared to the experimental results. Through this work, we believe that the proposed equivalent model of a filter can be applied to the analysis of breakaway devices in hydrogen fueling stations. We will study how to optimize the shape and position of the filter in breakaway devices using the developed equivalent model.
