This paper presents a performance analysis of the 1st generation bump foil journal bearings for the micro gas turbine TG75. Static performances such as load capacity and attitude angle are estimated by using soft elasto-hydrodynamic analysis technique, and dynamic performances such as stiffness and damping coefficients are estimated by perturbation method. Rotordynamic analysis for TG75 is performed by using the bearing analysis results. TG75 rotor has 2 horizontal and vertical directional natural modes due to the bearing stiffness characteristics. TG75 rotor will be stably operated between the 1st bending mode at 33000cpm and the 2nd bending mode at 85500cpm. Unbalance response analysis results satisfy the API vibration criteria.
An OEM driven working group started in January 2004 to elaborate the philosophies, concepts and test procedures for testing piston ring and cylinder liner materials as well as engine oils outside the engine using the $SRV^{(R)}$ test equipment. The different $SRV^{(R)}$ test philosophies in use by OEMs are compiled. The working group focuses on a.) ASTM sequence VIB (Fuel economy by aging oils), b.) friction and wear in the top dead region under mixed/boundary lubrication, c.) extreme pressure load under mixed/boundary lubrication and d.) hydrodynamic friction. Tribological test result and precision data are presented.
In this paper, the characteristics of lubrication and wear phenomena of journal bearing with respect to film parameter and Sommerfeld number variation are investigated experimentally and the design criterion for the hydrodynamic journal bearing is presented to avoid wear and seizure. Experimental work is performed with various rotating speed and load, and lubricant is used synthetic oil and mineral oil. By the results of the experiment, it is found that friction coefficient is decreased as Sommerfeld number is decreased, and that wear phenomenon is observed when Sommerfeld number is below $9$\times$10^{-4}$ and there are much alike in wear properties between synthetic and mineral oil.
In order to design a propeller with high efficiency and excellent cavitation performance, theoretical and experimental studies on the cavitation and noise characteristics according to the blade section shape are essential. In general, sheet cavitation, bubble cavitation, and cloud cavitation are the main causes of hull vibration and propeller surface erosion. However vortex cavitation, which has the greatest influence on the noise level because the fastest CIS in ship propeller, has been researched for a long time and studies have been conducted recently to control it. In this experiment, the development process of cavitation was measured by using three dimensional wings with two different wing section and wing tip shapes, and the noise level at that time was evaluated. In addition, we evaluated the relationship between cavitation inception and hydrodynamic force using three component load cell and we measured the velocity field of wing wake using LDV.
This paper presents a wear analysis procedure for calculating the wear of journal bearings of a four-strokes and four-cylinder engine operating at a constant angular crank shaft speed during firing conditions. To decide whether the lubrication state of a journal bearing is in the possible region of wear scar, we utilize the concept of the centerline average surface roughness to define the most oil film thickness scarring wear (MOFTSW) on two rough surfaces. The wear volume is calculated from the wear depth and wear angle, determined by the magnitude of each film thickness on a set of oil films with thicknesses lower than the MOFTSW at every crank angle. To calculate the wear volume at one contact, the wear range ratio during one cycle is used. The total wear volume is then determined by accumulating the wear volume at every contact. The fractional film defect coefficient, asperity load sharing factor, and modified specific wear rate for the application of the mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime are used. The results of this study show that wear occurs only at the connecting-rod big-end bearing. Thus, simulation results of only the big-end bearing are illustrated and analyzed. It is shown that the wear volume of each wear scar group occurs consecutively as the crank angle changes, resulting in the total accumulated wear volume.

The hydrodynamic interaction of two floating bodies in waves freely floating or connected by a rigid link is studied by using a boundary element method in the frequency-domain. The exact two-body hydrodynamic coefficients of added mass, wave damping and exciting force are calculated from the radiation-diffraction potential solution of the improved Green integral equation associated with the free surface Green function. The irregular frequencies in the conventional Green integral equation make it difficult to predict the physical resonance of the fluid in the gap between two bodies floating side by side. However, the improved Green integral equation employed in this study is free of irregular frequencies and always yields the exact solution of the multi-body radiation-diffraction potential boundary value problem. The 6 degree-of-freedom motions of two bodies freely floating side by side or connected parallel by a rigid link have been calculated for the incident wave frequencies ranging from 0.1 to 5 radians per second in head, left and right bow quartering seas. The 6-component load of the rigid link have also been presented.

In order to improve the safety r! ship berthing and the efficiency r! berth operation in the harbour, the berthing energy acting on a ship in berthing maneuver need to be estimated properly. The berthing energy is used as one q the criteria to determine the maximum permissible load of fender as well as important factors to establish the berthing speed and the required power r! tug-beat for pilot and ship operator. In this study, some problems r! present the method of berthing energy are discussed on the basis of the hydrodynamic aspects. As journal bearing has a sliding motion between the shaft and bearing with lubricating oil, it produces a hydrodynamic lubrication condition. Journal bearing can receive a large force because it takes a distributed load at the large friction face. As the oil groove or oil hole is made in the journal bearing surface for the journal bearing smoothly working under a hydrodynamic lubrication condition, sufficient lubricating oil is supplied through the clearance of journal bearing. The performance of the journal bearing is changed according to the shapes, sizes and positions of an oil groove. In this paper, the flow rate according to the oil groove shapes (triangle, semicircle and rectangle) among the various oil supply conditions was measured. The shape that discharges the highest flow rate was observed and the groove shape of optimal performance for the journal bearing was determined. The results showed that the flow rate increases with decreasing operating temperature, the influence of temperature on the flow rate decreased with increasing rotational speed, and flow rate in the triangular groove shape was greater than in other shapes.

In this paper, an experimental study on sloshing problems in an independent B-type tank of STX Offshore and Shipbuilding Co. is described. Recently STX Offshore and Shipbuilding Co. introduced a new design of an independent B-type tank in order to reduce sloshing impact loads on LNG CCS. This tank has many internal members, so that sloshing flow and the resultant hydrodynamic loads are very different from those in typical membrane tanks. In this study, a series of sloshing experiment have been carried out for 1/50 scale model, and the main characteristics of sloshing load on the independent tank are observed. The properly scaled internal members such as swash bulkhead, center bulkhead and stringers have been installed in the test tank model, but sloshing pressures are measured on the tank walls only. The forced excitation signals have been generated by using the predicted ship motion in irregular sea states. The characteristics of sloshing loads on this tank have been observed in different filling levels with various heading angles, and sea states. In this paper, some key findings from the model tests are discussed.
