High strength cement composites (W/C=0.1) were prepared by using various blending materials such as SiC whisker and white carbon (hydrated silica: SiO2·nH2O). The effect of various blending materials on the microstructure and strength of the hardened cement paste were investigated in the view of fracture mechanics. The plain specimen showed 101 MPa of flexural strength, 81 GPa of Young's modulus and 1.32 MPam1/2 of fracture toughness. When the blending materials were added to the composites, their values were enhanced to about 110∼138 MPa, 95∼146 GPa and 1.32∼1.87MPam1/2 respectively. The improvement of the mechanical strength for the hardened cement paste may be due to the removal of macropores, the reduction of total porosity, pozzolanic reaction and the increase of various fracture toughening effect.

The proton transport through proton exchange membranes is controlled by the distribution of hydrated structure connected with negative-charged fixed ions such as phosphonic acid, carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid, or water molecules within the membrane.(omitted)
The impedance and the subsequent proton conductivity of Nafion$\^$/ membranes as standard samples were measured and compared via the two-probe method and the four-probe method using the prepared impedance measurement system. The different impedance behavior for the same membrane was observed at the fully hydrated state in the Nyquist impedance plot. The effect of the humidity and the temperature on the proton conduction through a membrane was investigated and compared with two different cell configurations.
Poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) with different wt% water was studied gravimetrically as well as with 1H magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The composition of PVB samples changes during MAS NMR because of the centrifugal force. As MAS time progresses, initially free water was removed fast but bound water also was gradually depleted. More water was diminished at faster spinning speeds, longer spinning time, higher temperatures, and higher initial water contents. As water in PVB was reduced, the chemical shifts and line widths of different types of water and also those of PVB changed. Our results demonstrate that 1H MAS NMR carried out at 10 kHz in less than about 5 minutes is a convenient and sensitive technique to measure: (a) the content variations of different types of water in polymers, (b) the degree of the interaction of water and polymer, and (c) the molecular dynamics of the polymer. Our study can be extended to different soft polymers with other small molecules than water in them.

The purpose of the present investigation was to develop a novel method for cell immobilization. Aureobasidium pullulans cells were mixed with an alginate solution, and the mixture was extruded to form small gel beads as hydrated- immobilized cells. The beads were then placed at $-15^{\circ}C$ for 6-24 h to induce freeze-dehydration. The freeze-dehydration resulted in shrinkage of beads due to water removal reducing bead volume by 82% and bead weight by 85%. The dehydrated beads were successfully used for the production of fructo-oligosaccharides in a model reactor system. This study showed that bioreactor performance can be improved up to 2 times by the use of the dehydrated beads.
This short review focuses on fouling by proteins and macromolecules in microfiltration/ultrafiltration. First, an experimental system that enables investigation of how the extent of the adsorption of proteins and macromolecules on membrane surfaces contributes to a decrease in filtrate flux in microfiltration/ultrafiltration is described. Using this system, a causal relationship - not a correlation - indicating that adsorption results in a decrease in filtrate flux could be clearly demonstrated in some cases. Second, a hydration structure at the membrane surface that can suppress adsorption is discussed, inspired by biomaterial research. In their hydrated states, polymers with low-fouling properties have water molecules with a particular structure. Finally, some successful examples of the development of low-fouling membranes via surface modification using low-fouling polymers are discussed.
A series of the long-chain iron(II) alkylsulfonate hydrates were synthesized via self-assembly of surfactant alkyl chains in aqueous medium. Reaction of iron(II) salts with n-alkylsulfonate yields lamellar $Fe(CnH2n+1SO3)2{\cdot}4H_2O$. These compounds show a layered structure, as determined by XRD, consisting of alternating organic alkylsulfonate layers and inorganic iron(II) hydrate layers, with interlayer distances of upto 3.2 nm. This lamellar structure may be attributed to the amphiphilic nature of the surfactants, mediating the coordination and H-bionding interactions, and the hydrophobic alkyl chains. An alkyl chain packing of present system are differ from those of similar Cu(II) series, which are attributed from the size of hydrated metal(II) ions.

In this research we made the mean cement particle size 4 $\mu\textrm{m}$ which can penetrate even minor cracks based on the theory of J.K. Michel who reported particles can penetrate the crack of width up to 3 times of maximum particle size. The cement slurries were produced by adding super plasticizer. The slurries were tested with slurry characterization methods and its rheological properties were characterized. The early hydrated phenomena of ultra fine cement were observed by SEM, XRD and DSC during 24 hours. Mechanical properties of hardened slurry with JIS molds were also tested in 3, 7 and 28 days. The cracked specimens which were repaired with slurries produced various conditions were tested after 3, 7 and 28 days curing in the air and adhesion properties were characterized.

Shrinkage and creep are the fundamental properties of concrete. These long term deformations can be seen as bothersome(increased deflection) or can be seen as reduction of compressive stress of prestressed concrete. Steel fibers advance the mechanical properties of concrete:tensile strength, ductility, flexural strength, fracture toughness, and post-cracking resistance, etc...Silica fume is pozzolanic material which combines with hydrated lime to generate silicate materials which increase the compressive strength and reduce somewhat the creep of concrete. This paper is the result of the long-term deformation by silica fume and steel fibers with varying percentages.

Polymer-modified mortar was developed for improving the performance of modified mortar which is mixed with polymer, and it is used for protecting and repairing materials of building because of their excellent performance to improve characteristics which are compressive strength, flexural strength, and adhesive strength. However, the performances of the polymer-modified mortars are highly affected by materials, which are polymer, mortar, and aggregates, and conditions which are curing environment and testing method. Furthermore, dry curing method after hydrated curing has been recommended to make strong polymer film for the best curing method to make excellent characteristics. In this report, We investigated the co-relation between curing methods and the characteristics, which are compressive strength, flexural strength, and adhesive strength for the polymer-modified mortars that are used in the domestic area.
