  • In this paper the auther investigated the chemical properties, process of humification and type of humic acid in soils which were reclaimed by farming for cultivation in Kangwondo. The results obtained in this studies were summarized as follows: 1. General chemical components of these soil were similar to the ordinary soil but C.E.C. and humus contents were found much more 2. Humic acid and fulvic acid which were extracted with NaOH from soil were greater than those of Na-pyrophosphate(Na-p.) and NaF. Hmus contents and PQ% were increased much more in the upper layer than in the lower layer. 3. Degree of humification of humic acid extracted with NaOH. was very similar to those extracted with Na-pyrophosphate. Humification degree of humic acid extracted with NaF was lower than humic acid which were extracted with NaOH and Na-pyrophosphate. But humification degree of humic acid extracted with NaOH was similar to that with Na-pyrophosphate. Humic acid in B soil and the upper layer was higher than A, C soil and the lower layer of soil, in humification degree. 4. Humic acids extracted with NaOH and Na-pyrophosphate from soil were fractionated by Mg into two parts ${\alpha}$ type and ${\beta}$ type humic acid. Humic acids of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ type extracted with NaOH were higher than these of Na-pyrophosphate in humification degree. In this soil the humification degree of humic acid was not changed during the period of cultivation. 5. ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ type humic acid extracted with NaOH were very similar to the humic acid extracted with Na-pyrophosphate in shapes of absorption curves.

  • This study was conducted to find an optimal combination rate of castor meal for the good qualitative compost and to estimate the humification grade by physico-chemical characterization and phyto-toxicity test during composting of the mixture with cow manure and castor meal. The material ratios of the compost which was mixed with cow manure(C), castor meal(C), and saw dust(S) were 5 : 1 : 4(CCS-1), 5 : 2.5 : 2.5(CCS-2) and 5 : 4 : 1(CCS-3) by volume to volume, and they were decomposed for 60 days. In the result, the changes of temperature in all treatments during composting radically increased more than $63.6^{\circ}C$ at the incipient stage, and gradually decreased around $42^{\circ}C$. At the 60 days after the treatment, pH was slowly increased from 7.0 to 8.0, and the C/N ratio was 12.3~13.8 at the final composting stage. The low C/N ratio value was caused by the castor meal with high nitrogen level(T-N 5.7%). G.I.(germination index) showed in the range of 77.5 to 82.6 in all treatments. Among all treatments CCS-1 was appeared to be the best condition for composting. Therefore, the combination rate of castor meal which was used for compost humification improvement could be recommended 10% to manufacture the good qualitative cow manure compost.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the humification grade of compost, based on physico-chemical property and phyto-toxicity during the composting with three kinds of livestock manures and saw dust. The ratios of the compost, which was mixed with pig manure(P) and sawdust(S) were 4 : 6(PS-1), 5 : 5(PS-2) and 6 : 4(PS-3); poultry manure(PO) and sawdust(S) were 4 : 6(POS-1), 5 : 5(POS-2) and 6 : 4(POS-3); cow manure(C) and sawdust(S) were 4 : 6(CS-1), 5 : 5(CS-2) and 6 : 4(CS-3) by volume to volume, and they were decomposed for 60 days. In the result, the temperature in all treatments during composting rapidly increased above $65.4^{\circ}C$, and then gradually decreased to around $40^{\circ}C$. At 60 day, after the treatment, pH 5.9 ~ 8.0 at the incipient stage increased to 7.6 ~ 8.5, and the C/N ratio was 13.8 ~ 21.1 at the final composting stage. Germination Index(G.I.) showed in the range of 75.1 ~ 94.6 in all treatments at day 60. Therefore, it is likely recommended to take the best humification grade when the temperature maintains above $65^{\circ}C$ longer than a day at minimum, in the range of pH 6.5 ~ 8.5 for the final compost, under 20 of C/N ratio, and G.I. above 80. The level of G.I. above 80 should be the mature compost which could be used in the field without gas demage to crops.

  • Humic substances(HS) from Han River water was physic-chemically isolated by fractionational methods to investigate the seasonal distribution and to characterize the properties compared with intrinsic humic materials. Various HS samples were analyzed by element, Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance$(^1H-NMR)$ and fluorescence analyzers. The portion of HS from Han River water(HRHS) was 47.0% on the average, however it appeared that rainfall event brought about higher fraction of HS in Han River water by the periodic investigation. Aromaticity and humification degree of the HRHS were relatively lower than those of intrinsic humic materials originated from decomposing vegetation. FT-IR, $^1H-NMR$ and fluorescence spectroscopy showed the distinct differences between HRHS and intrinsic humic materials. Commercial humic materials could not represent structural and functional characteristics of local HS. The fluorescence spectroscopy, a relatively simple measurement, was found most useful tool to estimate humification degree for humic materials from particular sources.

  • The objective of study was to evaluate the apropriate maturity indices for garbage composting using sawdust as bulking agent. Materials used in this study were the average composition garbage(G20) and garbage conditioned by sawdust(GS30, GS50) and cereals(GSC30). Indices for evaluating maturity were VS, water soluble TOC, polysaccharide, Humification Index(HI), and E4/E6. Experiment results showed that VS reduction was the most desirable index for evaluating compost maturity except for the GS50 which were conditioned with high sawdust Water soluble TOC decreased rapidly during the composting of first one month and then little changed. Therefore, water soluble TOC was recommended as maturity index. Polysaccharide was considered as a maturity index in case of garbage conditioned with sawdust and high cereals. Humification Index(HI) and E4/E6 were available as maturity indices in case of only some garbage composting so additional study was needed to confirm them as maturity indices for all garbage composting. Correlation analysis indicated that indices for evaluating maturity of garbage(about 30 C/N ratio) adding sawdust as bulking agent and high cereals, were VS reduction, water soluble TOC, polysaccharide, and E4/E6.

  • Treated or untreated wastewater may be a major source of refractory organic matters (R-OM) in drinking water sources. For this study, spectroscopic characteristics of wastewater OM were investigated using the samples from 20 wastewater treatment plants, which are located at the upstream of the lake Paldang, to suggest a estimate index for R-OM in wastewater. R-OM was quantified by measuring total organic carbon (TOC) concentration of the wastewater samples remaining after 28-day dark incubation. Among the traditional OM indices such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) and initial TOC, CODMn showed the lowest correlation coefficients with R-TOC of the samples. The ratios of carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD) to $COD_{Cr}$ had a better correlation with the percent distribution of R-OM than $BOD/COD_{Cr}$ ratios. terrestrial humic-like fluorescence (THLF) exhibited the highest correlation coefficient with R-TOC among the indices obtained from the synchronous fluorescence spectra of the samples. Milori index, one of the humification indices, showed a good correlation with the percent distribution of wastewater. This study demonstrated that fluorescence properties might be a better indices to estimate the concentrations and the distributions of wastewater OM compared to the specific UV absorbance (SUVA) values. Some useful formulas based on OM spectroscopic characteristics were finally suggested to predict R-OM in wastewater.

  • Humic substances present in landfill leachates were extracted and their characteristics were analyzed with respect to landfilling age as a basic study to evaluate the effect of humic substances on the transport and transformation of other pollutants in pollution plume contaminated by landfill leachate. Element analysis of the extracted humic substances were performed. The information on the functional groups of the humic substances molecules were obtained from the spectroscopic analysis using UV-visible, FT/IR, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The structural characteristics of the humic substances were also analyzed by $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopy. From the results of the analyses it was found that the structure of the humic substances present in landfill leachates was more aliphatic than aromatic relative to other common humic substances extracted from natural soils and water. The results indicate that the degree of humification of the humic substances were relatively low. The degree of humification, however, was increased as the landfilling age was increased.

  • Present stadies were carried out to obtain fundermental data for effective management of the soils by investigating the physicochemical characteristics rubber fiber, humification grade and bearing power of peats and muck which were included in Geongdeog series, and Gimje series in Honam area. The results abtained were as follows; 1. Humification grade of peats were about 23, while that of muck soils was about 45-71 and those were higher in Gimje series than Bongnam series. 2. The organic tiers which humification grade was higher were high pH, bulk density, and contents of K, $P_2O_5$, B.S and while were low OM, T-C, T-N, Na, $SiO_2$ and rubbed fiber. 3. In peats and mucks, bulk density, pH, contents of T-N $P_2O_5$ and ash were negatively correlated with rubbed fiber and OM, CEC, T-C, PAC, C/N, C/P were positively correlated with one, while these physicochemical characteristics were oppositely correlated with humification grade. 4. Cone bearing power of each soil tiers was low in every Geongdeog series which had the thick organic tiers and showed poorly drainage and it was the highest in Gimje series which was similar to in organic soils because of its thin organic tiers.

  • To examine whether the xylene component of BTX (benzene, toluene, xylene) mixture is cometabolized and residues are produced in soil, $\^$14/C-labeled-0-xylene was added to sandy loam in combination with unlabeled benzene and toluene. After 4 weeks of incubation in a sealed system connected to an oxygen reservoir, 55.1% of the radiocarbon was converted to $\^$14/CO$\sub$2/, 3.0% was to 95.8% radiocarbon recovery. Biomass incorporation of o-xylene radiocarbon which was detected by fumigation/extraction was usually low (5.6%), but 32.1% radiocarbon became associated with soil humus. Most of the numus-bound radiocarbon was found in humin fraction. In addition to o-xylene, p-xylene and toluene also showed similar results. The evidence shows that some of their reactive methylcatechol biodegradation intermediates attach to the humic metrix in soil in preference to mineralization and biomass incorporation.
