The goal-gradient hypothesis states that the tendency to approach a goal increases with the increasing proximity of the goal (Hull 1932). It was initially supported with an evidence of animal experiments and since then, several papers have investigated the goal-gradient hypothesis in humans. Although there are some evidences related to the goal-gradient hypothesis in human behaviors, none of previous studies can properly explain its underlying mechanism, and what's more, they were not able to suggest useful managerial applications in human behaviors. From these perspectives, this work points out that there are some theoretical weaknesses to apply the goal-gradient hypothesis into the complicated human decision-making behaviors and proposes an alternative theoretical mechanismthat underlies the goal-gradient hypothesis in human. Finally, it offers insights into managerial implications of the goal-gradient hypothesis in the marketing field. This study focuses on the changes in motivations for achieving goals, in terms of how approaches to goals vary according to temporal distance from those goals. Specifically, the temporal construal theory (Liberman and Trope 1998) is considered as the underlying mechanism of the goal-gradient in that the temporal construal theory argues how the temporal distance from a goal makes people change their associated values regarding to that goal. According to the temporal construal theory, the value of distant future outcomes (near future outcomes) is construed on the basis of abstract and central features (concrete and peripheral features), and it argues that distant future situations are construed on a higher level than near future situations. This means that the value associated with the high-level construal is enhanced over delay, whereas the value associated with the low-level construal is discounted over delay. Our propositions suggest that the goal-gradient behavior in human can be motivated by the different aspects or characteristics of the goal as time changes based on the temporal construal theory. Thus, the following propositions are proposed. P 1-1: If the goal is far away, consumers put more value on the central features that are more associated with the desirability of the goal. P 1-2: If the goal is far away, consumers put more effort into accomplishing the goal that has more central features, regardless of its peripheral features. P 2-1: If a goal is near, consumers put more value on the peripheral features that are more associated with the feasibility of the goal. P 2-2: If a goal is near, consumers put more effort into accomplishing the goal that has more peripheral features, regardless of its central features. We hope to provide sufficient managerial implications for the companies as our research aims to show how consumers react differently as they progress toward the goal. Proposed propositions may provide guidance for companies developing a loyalty program, enabling them to understand what kinds of benefits or services they should provide or emphasize to consumers in loyalty programs on the basis of the time-dependent changes in outcome values (such as gifts, reward coupons). The effects of temporal distance from a goal should inform companies' marketing activities and help themto determine where emphasis should be placed in designing the benefits of their loyalty program.
The purpose of this study was to identify a determent of mastery approach goal and performance approach goal using a basic concept of goal orientations and goal setting theory, and to evaluate a preference of goal achievement index as a balance score card (BSC). The study model proposed had a adoptable level of goodness of fit index(.94) and root mean square residual(.08). The meditating variable, goal contribution, totally mediated the impact of goal commitment, Y-theory human behavior, and self-efficacy but organizational resource contribution for pursuing goal orientation. Moreover, goal contribution significantly determined mastery approach goal(p<.01) and performance approach goal(.05). In standardized effects, the most powerful antecedent of mastery approach goal and performance approach goal were in order of organizational resource contribution(.27/.28), goal contribution(.21/.17), self-efficacy(.07/.06), and Y -theory human behavior and goal commitment(.05/.05), respectively. Moreover, goal contribution had a more powerful impact on mastery approach goal(.21) rather than performance approach goal(.17). In the preference of BSC, all job types preferred learning and growth index in first. In the second preference, medical doctors and pharmacists chose financial results, nurses customer service, and office managers internal processes. Each job type reflected its' own preferred BSC index to that of the other job types. In comparing a preference of four BSC index of each own job type, it was statistically different at p<.001. In conclusion, one who emphasize organizational goal contribution in pursuing goal orientation has a more strong orientation toward mastery approach goal rather than performance approach goal. A hospital should overcome and harmonize the different preferences of four BSC index since the differences might cause organizational conflicts among job types with having each unique professional norm.
This paper presents a novel approach to face detection by localizing faces as the goal-specific saliencies in a scene, using the framework of selective visual attention of a human with a particular goal in mind. The proposed approach aims at achieving human-like robustness as well as efficiency in face detection under large scene variations. The key is to establish how the specific knowledge relevant to the goal interacts with the bottom-up process of external visual stimuli for saliency detection. We propose a direct incorporation of the goal-related knowledge into the specification and/or modification of the internal process of a general bottom-up saliency detection framework. More specifically, prior knowledge of the human face, such as its size, skin color, and shape, is directly set to the window size and color signature for computing the center of difference, as well as to modify the importance weight, as a means of transforming into a goal-specific saliency detection. The experimental evaluation shows that the proposed method reaches a detection rate of 93.4% with a false positive rate of 7.1%, indicating the robustness against a wide variation of scale and rotation.
In (Advaita) $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ although human beings are destined to have a pessimistic starting point in life, their goal of life is to become a Perfect Being which is called 'Liberation' (mokṣa) by self-transcendence. This human goal together with several means are accepted by $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ as solely valuable thing in the life. In this way there must be a self-recognition of his own value in the process of Liberation, through which one recognizes his own true nature i.e. ${\bar{A}}tman$. ${\bar{A}}tman$ is clearly defined to be 'Existence, Consciousness, Bliss' (Being, Illumination, Good), and this definition is made with the view of revealing that It is ultimate foundation and source of human beings ontologically, epistemologically and axiologically. However, as $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$points of view on human goal are not without critical limitations, it may be necessary to revaluate 'the process of self-inquiry' devised to achieve human goal. Inquiry is, first of all, an accepting process of what is given in $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ as the scenario that gives rise to most actual result, then, a performing and verifying process of that scenario in one's own experience consistently. In this process, a shift of action from worldly life to unworldly life is what is called 'self-adjustment', a removal of 'the self in excess' through knowledge of the real Self is what is called 'simplification of the self', and at the end of simplification a state of ultimate Self is 'Liberation'. Therefore, the inquiry of $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ into human goal can be summarized as following formula; 'good action = self-adjustment' ${\rightarrow}$ 'good knowledge = simplification of the self' ${\rightarrow}$ 'Liberation = ultimate Self'.

The focus of this study was to investigate whether flow occurs during both goal-directed and experiential activities, if experiential and foal-directed flow states differ in terms of various measures and dimensions. Fifty male and eighteen female subjects were participated in controlled, comparative experiment between goal-directed and experiential activities in problem-solving tasks. The findings indicate that subjects experience more curiosity and involvement(focus) in problem solving tasks with experiential activities. However, the results showed subjects experience more enjoyment in tasks with goal-directed activities. Findings of this study suggested that more sophisticated and quantitative measures in various dimensions should be constructed and verified in order to apply flow theory to human-computer interaction.
Global climate change is associated with all of the human activity, and its sudden change can be taken an issue of the serious environmental problem in our human society. The purpose of this study is to develope the goal and the content system for the climate change education. As a result, first, according to the questionnaires on climate change, students from Grade 3 to Grade 10 seem to interpret it as fragmentary perspectives. In addition, in terms of students' own actions as the corresponding strategy to climate change, the higher their grades were, the lower their actions were. Second, the development goal on climate change and its educational directions were set by reflecting students' perception. The education goal on climate change is to perceive the changing environment by understanding phenomena of climate change, to propose plans that can mitigate and adjust climate change through a variety of research, and to keep practicing the proposed plans as a member of a community for the global environment. Third, fields and items of educational contents to climate change were created and drawn out. The content system is composed of 'basic science of climate change', 'relationship with climate change', and 'coping with climate change'. Furthermore, concrete contents for the climate change education in elementary school were suggested so that its goal and content system can be used in the existing curriculum.
Background: Physical activity (PA) is ranked as a leading health indicator and the workplace is a key setting to promote PA. The purpose of this study was to examine how goal-setting and exercise self-efficacy (SE) during a health promotion program influenced PA level among Japanese workers. Methods: Using a cross-sectional study design, we surveyed 281 employees. The short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to assess PA level. Exercise SE was assessed using a partially modified version of Oka's exercise SE scale. Personal goals were assessed as the total numbers of "yes" responses to five items regarding "details of personal goals to perform PA". A mediational model was used to examine whether exercise SE mediates between the number of personal goals and PA level. Results: The mean age of the participants was 46.3 years, 76.2% were men, and the most common occupational category was software engineer (30.6%). The average PA level per week exceeded the recommended level in 127 participants (45.2%). One hundred and eighty-four participants (65.5%) set some form of concrete personal goal to perform PA. The relationship between the number of personal goals and PA level was mediated by exercise SE. Conclusion: Our study showed that exercise SE mediates goal-setting and increases PA. The results suggest that the components of PA promotion programs should be tailored to enhance participants' confidence in performing PA.
This paper presents characteristics of a virtual human's navigation using a limited perception-based mapping. Previous approaches to virtual human navigation have used an omniscient perception requiring full layout of a virtual environment in advance. However, these approaches have a limitation on being a fundamental solution for a human-likeness of a virtual human, because behaviors of humans are basically based on their limited perception instead of omniscient perception. In this paper, we integrated Hill's mapping algorithm with a virtual human to experiment virtual human's navigation with the limited perception. This approach does not require full layout of the virtual environment, 360-degree's field of view, and vision through walls. In addition to static objects such as buildings, we consider enemy emergence that can affect an virtual human's navigation. The enemy emergence is used as the variable on the experiment of this present research. As the number of enemies varies, the changes in arrival rate and time taken to reach the goal position were observed. The virtual human navigates by two conditions. One is to take the shortest path to the goal position, and the other is to avoid enemies when the virtual human encounters them. The acquired result indicates that the virtual human's navigation corresponds to a human cognitive process, and thus this research can be a framework for human-likeness of virtual humans.
This study investigates how well pre-teachers in preschools aware the importance of science teaching methods, goals and efficacy, and how different the pre-teachers recognize the importance of methods and goals in science teaching according to the levels of their science teaching efficacy. The subjects were 207 pre-service preschool teachers in Chonnam University and Chonbuk University. The data were collected by using three questionnaires("Science teaching efficacy", "Science teaching goal" and "Science teaching method"). The data were analyzed by a t-test and descriptive statistic. The results are as follows: first, the efficacy levels of the pre-teachers are higher than the average. The pre-teachers perceive a 'process-oriented' goal more importantly than a 'content-oriented' goal in early science education. Also, they recognize science teaching methods as being significant in the order of an 'interactive' approach, an 'activity-discovery' approach and a 'knowledge-transmission' approach. Second, the pre-teachers with high teaching efficacy recognize a 'process-oriented' goal as being more important than those with low teaching efficacy do.
Extracting primitives from imagery plays an important task in visual information processing since the primitives provide useful information about characteristics of the objects and patterns. The human visual system utilizes features without difficulty for image interpretation, scene analysis and object recognition. However, to extract and to analyze feature are difficult processing. The ultimate goal of digital image processing is to extract information and reconstruct objects automatically. The objective of this study is to develop robust method to achieve the goal of the image processing. In this study, an adaptive strategy was developed by implementing Gabor filters in order to extract feature information and to segment images. The Gabor filters are conceived as hypothetical structures of the retinal receptive fields in human vision system. Therefore, to develop a method which resembles the performance of human visual perception is possible using the Gabor filters. A method to compute appropriate parameters of the Gabor filters without human visual inspection is proposed. The entire framework is based on the theory of human visual perception. Digital images were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed strategy. The results show that the proposed adaptive approach improves performance of the Gabor filters for feature extraction and segmentation.
