  • Wild boars have expanded their habitats in Korea in recent years and caused serious social problems such as crop damage and appearance in urban areas. This study was carried out from May to October 2012 to investigate the environmental factors that affect crop damage based on actual cases reported in Geochang County of Gyeongnam Province, Korea. The analysis showed that the damages by wild boars occurred mainly between August and September, and rice was damaged most often while sweet potatoes were damaged most intensely. The results indicated that the damages were related to the wild boars' preference of crop and the seasonal availability of crops. Other factors that affected the crop damage included the slope, the topographic relief, and the distances from forest, stream, road, and residential area. There was no significant difference of environmental factor according to damage intensity, suggesting that the wild boars tended to attack the same cropland repeatedly and thus accumulating the damage. Our study suggests that reducing crop damages by wild boars will require cultivating crops less preferred by wild boars, installing electric fences, and controlling wild boar population with hunting and trapping.

  • Purpose: Pyrethroid is an insecticide that produces moderate intoxication in mammals, with neither exposure to skin nor inhalation resulting in severe systemic manifestations. In 2005 we made a nationwide survey of agrichemical human intoxication. The object of this study is to analyze pyrethroid intoxications based on the 2005 survey. Methods: We prospectively collected data from 1 August 2005 to 31 July 2006 by a standard investigation protocol. We analyzed demographic data, exposure data (cause, amount, ingredients), clinical features, and courses. Results: A total of 125 cases of pyrethroid intoxication were surveyed. The mean patient age was $56.78{\pm}16.158$ years old, and the mean amount ingested was $121.85{\pm}110.732ml$. Patients were classified into four severity groups according to symptoms and mental status: the asymptomatic group (27 patients, 21.6%), the mild symptom group (48, 38.4%), the moderate symptom group (21, 16.8%), and the severe symptom group (7, 5.6%). There were statistically significant differences in mental status, severity, and mean ICU days between two groups. Admission days by severity grade for the asymptomatic, mild, moderate, and severe symptom groups were $5.49{\pm}16.051,\;3.65{\pm}4.143,\;4.59{\pm}3.335,\;and\;8.14{\pm}7.199days$, respectively (p=0.047). Conclusion: Nationwide surveillance was extremely telling in uncovering a high frequency of agrichemical intoxication in Korea. In pyrethroid intoxication, severity grading can be a useful prognostic tool.

  • Normal somatic cells proliferate for a limited number of doublings in culture and then enter an irreversible growth-arrest state called replicative senescence. Replicative senescence has been believed a reason for the limited cellular turnover and deterioration of tissue function in aged animals. However, there is no experimental evidence supporting this assumption. Furthermore, cells from aged person have been poorly characterized with an exception of the cases of T cells. In this study, we examined cell biological changes occurring in replicative senescence of fibroblast strains originated from a new-born (NHF-NB) and a 87 year old man (NHF-87). NHF-87 (and the cells from a 75-year old) proliferated to smaller population doublings and with longer doubling times than NHF-NB did. At early passages, NHF-87 exhibited a low senescence-associated ${\beta}-Gal$ (SA ${\beta}-Gal$) activity and lipofuscin level, typical markers for cellular senescence. Furthermore, they maintained low levels of lysosome and reactive oxygen species (ROS). All of these levels increased dramatically in the late passage NHF-87 quite similarly as those in the late passaged NHF-NB did. These results indicate that most cells originated from the aged maintain a phenotype of the cells originated from new-born donors and undergo replicative senescence with the same kinetics as that of the cells from new-born. It is also indicated that not SA ${\beta}-gal$ activity but cell proliferation rate may be qualified as a biomarker for cells aged in vivo.

  • Recently, reports of cruel group sexual assault in India have been frequently reported. The most prominent group sexual assault incident in India was a medical student, Joti Singh case, that six men raped her and damaged her genitals and organs on a bus and caused her death in 2012. This incident led to the launch and passage of a strong punishment bill including death penalty for sexual assault. But since then, sexual assault is still on the rise. As a result of examining the relations with regional characteristics centering on the areas where sexual assaults occurred, it was found that most of the cases of group sexual assault reported in the media occurred in the mid-north of India, and this was consistent with the region of the Hindu stressed region. If so, it can only be concluded that Hindu fundamentalism, in which female neglect is severe, is the cause. Hindu fundamentalists try to revive the traditional values of women with a strong retroism tendency. In Indian society, women are still at risk of collateral damage. The pursuit of Hindu fundamentalism by the ruling party and political leaders will require much more time to improve the women's social status and human rights.

  • Recently, service-related products have gained more attention than general products on the existing social commerce sites. Based on the situation, the effect that the service quality of social commerce has on customer satisfaction was analyzed in this study. It is a study that analyzes how much the service quality affects the customer satisfaction after the purchase, targeting consumers who have made purchases of social commerce products. In the case of social commerce, it is well-known that the diversity and convenience of products have a significant effect on customer satisfaction. Social commerce is currently being dumped beyond the 900 sites and dozens of cases of news, real-time searches of popular portal sites appeared not to be bored enough to related sites to drive the popularity coming quickly dug into our everyday lives of human beings. Yet the perception of social commerce seems not properly established because of the new concept was suddenly going to go through penetration without a collective interpretation and acceptance process. Most of the companies that often mimic the syoseol commerce is large, the blame did not depart from the forms of social shopping. We believe that personal and exhibit their skills and talents, and to wonder to see the social rather than the individuals who make unilateral companies.

  • This study investigated many factors which had to be considered importantly in space planning for the cultural contents exhibition hall on the basis of establishment cases at this time that cultural contents were considered very importantly in the national economy. It must be a priority to set up the concept of the exhibition space which can encompass exhibition spaces, exhibits, the approach to experience exhibitions and others for the effective planning for exhibition spaces showing cultural contents. Visitors' moving lines should be planned based on that concept setting. It is necessary to reflect human attributes that people detect environmental information and perceive the environment through their sensory organs and plan moving lines considering visitors' cognitive, emotional and psychological factors which they can feel according to the temporal order. In addition, this study led visitors to respond exhibits through their five senses and increased the effects that visitors appreciated exhibition spaces, actively getting out of the way that visitors experienced exhibitions, which might be limited to sight. This study will be able to provide specific space planning methods related to the establishment of cultural industry-based professional exhibition halls which have been increased day by day at this time that culture-based industries are considered to be important. Moreover, it will be helpful in reducing the trial and effort factor in the exhibition hall establishment project.

  • We investigated the occurrence of red tide, harmful algal blooms(HABs), at the end of 14th century until the beginning of 19th century recorded in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, which are the authentic and encyclopedic annual records of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. In total, 81 cases of HABs are recorded in the annals for which authors draw a table and maps. The number of HABs occurrence at each sea is as follows: 68 times at the South Sea; 50 times at the East Sea; and 23 times at the Yellow Sea. A region hit by red tide most frequently was Gyeongsang-do Province (over 80 times), which borders on both the South Sea and the East Sea. HABs written in the annals follow two distinctive occurrence patterns. The first pattern shows red tide started at Gangwon-do Province in March, spread north to Hamgyeongnam-do Province in April, and moved further north to Hamgyeongbuk-do Province in May and June. On the other hand, the second pattern shows red tide occurred in Gyeongsangnam-do Province in August and then expanded north to Gyeongsangbuk-do Province in September. HABs generally happened from March to September, culminating in August. Paralytic shellfish poisoning incidents involving human deaths were reported in Jinhae, Geoje and Tongyeong, occurring February to June. Fish mortality increased throughout Gyeongsang-do Province from July to September. HABs occurred on an extensive scale from 1394 to 1451 and again from 1654 to 1706. HABs also occurred on a lesser scale from 1493 to 1534 and again from 1588 to 1609. In general, vast HABs occurred in odd years (1399, 1403, 1413 and 1681).

  • Purpose: The chemokine receptor CXCR4 has been reported to be aberrantly expressed in human cancer and has been shown to participate in cancer metastasis. We compared the expression of CXCR4 in conventional high-grade and low-grade central osteosarcomas, and determined if an association between CXCR4 expression and prognosis could be made. Materials and Methods: We performed the immunohistochemistry for CXCR4 in a total of 63 patients with osteosarcoma and determined the relationships according to the clinicopathologic variables and overall survival rates. Results: CXCR4 was detected in 76.3% of conventional high-grade osteosarcoma patients and in 36% of low-grade central osteosarcomas. Diffuse expression was noted in 47.4% of the high-grade osteosarcomas and all low-grade cases were focal positive. CXCR4 expression was significantly correlated with histologic grade (p<0.0001). While overall survival rate was reduced significantly with increased CXCR4 expression (p=0.0058), higher histologic grade (p<0.0001), and younger age (p=0.0140), survival rate did not correlate with gender, tumor size, or AJCC stage. Conclusion: Our results suggest that CXCR4 expression is associated with higher-grade tumors and with poor prognosis for osteosarcoma patients.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the recurrence rate after performing hallux valgus correction using scarf and Akin osteotomy, and also identified the correlation and cut-off values of both the preoperative and postoperative radiographic parameters as risk factors for the recurrence of hallux valgus. Materials and Methods: We reviewed 87 hallux valgus patients (122 feet) who received scarf and Akin osteotomy from January 2007 to August 2015. The clinical outcomes were evaluated using the visual analogue scale (VAS) and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scores. The radiological outcome measures included the hallux valgus angle (HVA), intermetatarsal angle (IMA), and distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA) as determined on the serial weight bearing radiographs. Recurrence was defined as more than 20 degrees of HVA noted on the final follow-up radiograph. Those radiological factors associated with recurrence were evaluated and analyzed. Results: The mean follow-up duration was 20.6 months (12.0~46.5 months) and the mean age was 44 years (13~80 years). The VAS and AOFAS scores were significantly improved at the time of the final follow-up (7.0 to 2.0, p<0.001; 78.0 to 92.0, p<0.001; respectively). Significant corrections in the HVA, IMA, and DMAA were obtained (p<0.001). Eleven (9.0%: 11/122) cases experienced recurrent hallux valgus deformity. The postoperative IMA, DMAA and HVA showed significant moderate to strong correlation with HVA at the final follow-up (Pearson correlation coefficient: 0.44, 0.70, and 0.88, respectively; p<0.001). Postoperative HVA>16.7 degrees, postoperative DMAA>13.9 degrees, and postoperative IMA>8.2 degrees showed statistically significant correlation with radiological recurrence at the last follow-up, and the odds ratio of each variable was high in order. Conclusion: Our radiographic results indicated that postoperative HVA>16.7 degrees, postoperative DMAA>13.9 degrees, and postoperative IMA>8.2 degrees can be risk factors for hallux valgus recurrence. These risk factors may be helpful for modifying surgical procedures and preventing the recurrence of hallux valgus.
