The recent national contract (Ecotechnopia 21) supported by the ministry of environment puts much significance on new issues for the assessment of human effects arising from vibration and noise exposed to human. This paper focuses only on hand-arm vibration since it has been a major problem in protecting vibration exposure to human. To set up a systematic way of assessing adverse effects of hand-arm vibration, surveys were made on recent international standards and researches related to hand-arm vibration. The measurement and evaluation methods of hand-arm transmitted vibration, the relationship between vibration exposure and effects on health, and the assessment methods of nerve dysfunctions are addressed in this paper. Those methods are linked into a logical way of assessing effects of hand-arm vibration on human. Finally, the current activities and achievements in this work are briefly summarised.

During the communication and interaction with a human using motions or gestures, a humanoid robot needs not only to look like a human but also to behave like a human to make sure the meanings of the motions or gestures. Among various human-like behaviors, arm motions of the humanoid robot are essential for the communication with people through motions. In this work, a mathematical representation for characterizing human arm motions is first proposed. The human arm motions are characterized by the elbow elevation angle which is determined using the position and orientation of human hands. That representation is mathematically obtained using an approximation tool, Response Surface Method (RSM). Then a method to generate human-like arm motions in real time using the proposed representation is presented. The proposed method was evaluated to generate human-like arm motions when the humanoid robot was asked to move its arms from a point to another point including the rotation of its hand. The example motion was performed using the KIST humanoid robot, MAHRU.

A master-slave system for teleoperation is usually used to control the robor's motion on remote place such as abyss, outer space etc.. When the slave robot is a humanoid one, it can make a better performance if the configuration of the master arm is similar to that of the slave arm and of the human. The master arm proposed in this paper has a type to be put on the human arm, that is, the exoskeleton type, and has a combination of serial joint and parallel mechanism imitating the human's arm structure of muscles and bones, so called hybrid mechanism so that it can follow arm's movement effectively. But it is easy to solve the forward kinematis of the parallel structure because relating equations are implicit functions. In order to solve that, the virtual joint angle corresponding to human arm's joint is introduced and a sequential computation step is employed in calculating virtual joint angles and the posture of the end effector. Also validity is checked up through computational simulation.

This study developed a human robot mast arm, which has a structure similar to the human arm, with the objective of taking over human works. The robot arm was structured to reproduce human actions using three axes on each of the shoulder and the wrist based on mechanics, and the actuator of each axis adopted an ordinary DC motor. The servo system of the actuator is a one body type employing an amp for electric power, and it was designed to be small and lightweight for easy installation. We examined the posture control characteristics of the developed robot mast arm in order to test its interlocking, continuous motions and reliability.

The human sensibility caused by the motion of an object grasped by a human operator is defined as kinesthetic sense of arm. Due to nonlinearity and ambiguity of human sense, there is no absolute standard for quantification of kinesthetic sense. In this research, a so-called 2-dimensional arm motion generator is developed to present various mechanical impedance (i.e., stiffness or damping) characteristics to a human arm. The kinesthetic words representing arm kinesthetic sense are selected and then the subject's satisfaction levels on these words for given impedance values are measured and processed by the SD method and factor analysis. In addition, the quantification method using neural network is proposed to take into account the individual difference between the mean sensibility and each subject's sensibility. Through this proposed algorithm, the sensibility of human motion described qualitatively can be converted into engineering data ensuring objectivity, reproducibility, and universality.

There are few representative humanoid robots including Japanese ASIMO from Honda and HUBO from KAIST. We cannot consider ASIMO and HUBO the perfect humanoid robots, however. The basic principles when developing humanoid robot is to make them to work in a similar way as human's movement of arm. In this paper, we proposed method of designing humanoid robotic arms based on the morphological.eurological analysis of human's arm tor robot's arm to work in a similar way as human's ann, and we also implemented arm movement control system to humanoids robot by using SERCOS communication.

A man model can be used as an effective tool to design ergonomically sound products and workplaces, and subsequently evaluate them properly. For a man model to be truly useful, it must be integrated with a posture prediction model which should be capable of representing the human arm reach posture in the context of equipments and workspaces. Since the human movement possesses redundant degrees of freedom, accurate representation or prediction of human movement was known to be a difficult problem. To solve this redundancy problem, a psychophysical cost function was suggested in this study which defines a cost value for each joint movement angle. The psychophysical cost function developed integrates the psychophysical discomfort of joints and the joint range availability concept which has been used for redundant arm manipulation in robotics to predict the arm reach posture. To properly predict an arm reach posture, an arm reach posture prediction model was then developed in which a posture configuration that provides the minimum total cost is chosen. The predictivity of the psychophysical cost function was compared with that of the biomechanical cost function which is based on the minimization of joint torque. Here, the human body is regarded as a two-dimensional multi-link system which consists of four links ; trunk, upper arm, lower arm and hand. Real reach postures were photographed from the subjects and were compared to the postures predicted by the model. Results showed that the postures predicted by the psychophysical cost function closely simulated human reach postures and the predictivity was more accurate than that by the biomechanical cost function.

This thesis aims to investigate new approaches to the control strategies of human arm movements and its application for the human interface. By analyzing myoelectric signal(MES) from the arm movements of the normal human subjects, neurological informations obtained patterned could be used to identify different movement patterns of the arm movement. In this paper Artificial neural network for separation of the contraction patterns of four kinds of arm movements, i.e. and flexion and extension of the elbow and adduction and abduction of the forearm were adopted through computer simulation and experiments results were compared with the experimental added-load arm movements.
Patients with spinal cord injuries cannot move their limbs using their intact muscles. A suitable controller can be used to move their arms by employing the functional electrical stimulation method. In this article, a fuzzy exponential sliding-mode controller is designed to move a musculoskeletal human arm model to track an optimal trajectory in the sagittal plane. This optimal arm trajectory is obtained by developing a policy for the central nervous system. In order to specify the optimal trajectory between two points, two dynamic and static optimal criteria are applied simultaneously. The first dynamic objective function is defined to minimize the joint torques, and the second static optimization is offered to minimize the muscle forces at each moment. In addition, fuzzy logic is used to tune the sliding-surface parameter to enable an appropriate tracking performance. Simulation results are evaluated and compared with experimental data for upward and downward movements of the human arm.
