  • Smart homes are the new generation of homes where pervasive computing is employed to make the lives of the residents more convenient. Human activity recognition (HAR) is a fundamental task in these environments. Since critical decisions will be made based on HAR results, accurate recognition of human activities with low uncertainty is of crucial importance. In this paper, a novel HAR method based on a difference of convex programming (DCP) problem is represented, which manages to handle uncertainty. For this purpose, given an input sensor data stream, a primary belief in each activity is calculated for the sensor events. Since the primary beliefs are calculated based on some abstractions, they naturally bear an amount of uncertainty. To mitigate the effect of the uncertainty, a DCP problem is defined and solved to yield secondary beliefs. In this procedure, the uncertainty stemming from a sensor event is alleviated by its neighboring sensor events in the input stream. The final activity inference is based on the secondary beliefs. The proposed method is evaluated using a well-known and publicly available dataset. It is compared to four HAR schemes, which are based on temporal probabilistic graphical models, and a convex optimization-based HAR procedure, as benchmarks. The proposed method outperforms the benchmarks, having an acceptable accuracy of 82.61%, and an average F-measure of 82.3%.

  • A human ribosomal protein S3 (rpS3), which also functions as a DNA repair enzyme(UV endonuclease III), was expressed in a methylotrophic yeast, Pichia pastoris, and biochemically characterized. UV endonuclease activity was preiously characterized, and this activity of mammalian rpS3 was found to be non-specfic upon purification and storage. Under the Pichia expression system, the subcloned cDNA of the human rpS3 gene revealed a peptide of 42 kDa by SDS-PAGE and Western blot. The secreted form of human rpS3 rendered no endonuclease activity while the intracellular form showed UV specific endonuclease activity by the nick circle assay.

  • Proteolytic enzymes secreted by Aspergillus, as pathogenicity factors, affect blood coagulation and fibrinolysis, and therefore the target proteins of their action in the bloodstream are of significant interest. In the present study, the action of the isolated protease of A. terreus 2 on different human plasma proteins was shown. The protease of A. terreus 2 exhibited the highest proteolytic activity against hemoglobin, which was 2.5 times higher than the albuminolytic activity shown in both of the protein substrates used. In addition, the protease has significant ability to hydrolyze both fibrin and fibrinogen. However, the inability of the A. terreus 2 protease to coagulate rabbit blood plasma and coagulate human and bovine fibrinogen indicates the severity of the enzyme's action on human blood coagulation factors. It should be considered as a potential indicator of this isolated protease's participation in fungal pathogenesis. The protease shows no hemolytic activity. Furthermore, its activity is insignificantly inhibited by thrombin inhibitors, and is not inhibited by plasmin inhibitors.

  • The accuracy of training-based activity recognition depends on the training procedure and the extent to which the training dataset comprehensively represents the activity and its varieties. Additionally, training incurs substantial cost and effort in the process of collecting training data. To address these limitations, we have developed a training-free activity recognition approach based on a fuzzy logic algorithm that utilizes a generic activity model and an associated activity semantic knowledge. The approach is validated through experimentation with real activity datasets. Results show that the fuzzy logic based algorithms exhibit comparable or better accuracy than other training-based approaches.

  • Effects of nitric oxide and hypoxia on ethoxyresorufin deethylase in Hepa I cells and MCF-7 human breast cancer cells were examined. TCDD treatment have resulted in the stimulation of ethoxyresorufin deethylase activity based on fluorometry in Hepa I in dose and time dependent manner. 0.1 nM TCDD showed maximal stimulation of ethoxyresorufin deethylase activity and 24 hour treatment also showed maximal stimulation of ethoxyresorufin deethylase activity. In MCF-7 human breast cancer cells, untreated cells showed high basal level of ethoxyresorufin deethylase activity. TCDD treatment to MCF-7 cells resulted minor stimulation of ethoxyresorufin deethylase activity compared to that in Hepa I cells. Nitric oxide and hypoxia inhibit TCDD effects on ethoxyresorufin deethylase activity in both cell lines. And also flavonoids, such as quercetin showed an inhibition of ethoxyresorufin deethylase activity that is stimulated with TCDD or 3-Methylcholanthrene. Estrogen and estrogen metabolite such as 16 a-estriol and 2-hydroxyestradiol also affects the ethoxyresorufin deethylase activity in MCF-7 cells.

  • This paper describes the current spatial patterns of the net primary productivity (NPP) of the terrestrial vegetation and carbon emission (C) in the world due to the burning of fossil fuels in order to clarify the amount of expansion of human activity. The C/NPP value varies spatially from almost zero to several tens of thousand times the local NPP. C/NPP is higher under the condition of extensive human activities due to a high human population density or when the local NPP is extremely low in severe climatic zones. In contrast, the low C/NPP areas are distributed mainly in sparsely populated districts, loading to a low impact of human activity. Although the area where C/NPP is less than 10% accounts for about 70% of the entire land area, one-third of these areas cannot contribute to carbon absorption because of low NPP with a shortage of climatic resources. Since more than half of the areas of the remaining areas are agricultural land and forest ecosystems with high NPP, the possible afforestation area was evaluated to be maximum of $30{\times}10^{6}\;km^{2}$; here only sequestrate carbons that correspond to 2% of the global total NPP are present. These analyses revealed that presently most of the areas where the NPP is high are those exclusively used by humans and that it is difficult for large-scale forest plantations to absorb a substantial amount of the carbon emitted annually by humans.

  • Context-awareness is an essential part of ubiquitous computing, and over the past decade video based activity recognition (VAR) has emerged as an important component to identify user's context for automatic service delivery in context-aware applications. The accuracy of VAR significantly depends on the performance of the employed human body segmentation algorithm. Previous human body segmentation algorithms often engage modeling of the human body that normally requires bulky amount of training data and cannot competently handle changes over time. Recently, active contours have emerged as a successful segmentation technique in still images. In this paper, an active contour model with the integration of Chan Vese (CV) energy and Bhattacharya distance functions are adapted for automatic human body segmentation using depth cameras for VAR. The proposed technique not only outperforms existing segmentation methods in normal scenarios but it is also more robust to noise. Moreover, it is unsupervised, i.e., no prior human body model is needed. The performance of the proposed segmentation technique is compared against conventional CV Active Contour (AC) model using a depth-camera and obtained much better performance over it.

  • This study examines the effects of Korean Crataegi fructrus(KCF) and Chinese Crataegi fructrus(CCF) on the antioxidative activity and antiproliferation of human cancer cells(HCT-116 human colon, Hep G2 human liver, and A549 human lung cancer cells). The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, and antioxidative index of the Crataegi fructrus ethanol extracts were significantly higher in KCF than in CCF. The DPPH radical-scavenging activity of the KCF ethanol extract was 82.26%(1000 ppm), and that of the CCF ethanol extract was 77.64%. Antiproliferation effects of 80% ethanol extracts of KCF and CCF on human cancer cells(HCT-116, Hep G2 and A549) increased in a dose-dependent manner. Inhibitory effects of KFC on HCT-116 and A549 cells were greater than those of CCF. The results suggest that ethanol extracts of Crataegi fructrus have antioxidative and hyperplasia inhibition effects on human cancer cells.

  • This study was undertaken to clerify the cytotoxic effect of syringic acid by colorimetric assay on human cancer cells. For the evaluation of cytotoxicity of syringic acid, the cell viability and cell adhesion activity of syringic acid on cancer cells, human oral epithelioid carcinoma cells were determined using by colorimetric assays such as MTT (3-[4,5dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay and XTT (2,3-bis-[2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl]2H-tetrazolium-5-caboxanilide) assay, respectively after human oral epithelioid carcinoma cells were treated with syringic acid for 48 hours. In this study, the cell viability of syringic acid on human oral epithelioid carcinoma cells showed a significant decrease by MTT assay compared with control, and also, the cell adhesion activity by XTT assay was decreased significantly in these cells after cells were treated with various concentrations of syringic acid for 48 hours. $MTT_{50}\;and\;XTT_{50}\;were\;282.3\;{\mu}M\;and\;418.8{\mu}M$ syringic acid, respectively. These results suggest that syringic acid shows midcytotoxic effect on human oral epithelioid carcinoma cells by the decreasement of the cell viability and the cell adehision activity assessed by colorimetric assay in these cultures.

  • A new series of highly water soluble platinum(II) complexes {Pt(II)[1,3-bis(phenylthio) propane](trans- -1,2-diaminocyclohexane) (PC-1) and Pt(II)[1,3-bis-(phenythio)propane] cis-1,2-diaminocyclohexane(PC-2)} were synthesized, and characterized by their elemental analysis and by various spectroscopic techniques[infrared(IR), 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)]. In vitro antitumor activity of new Pt(II) complexes was tested against P-388 and L-1210 mouse lymphocytic leukemia cell lines, PC-14 / P, PC-14/ADM and PC-14 / CDDP human pulmonary adenocarcinima, DU-145 human prostate carcinoma, HT-1376 human bladder carcinoma, ZR-75-1 human breast carcinoma, MKN-45/P and MKN-45/CDDP human gastric adenocarcinoma cell lines using colorimetric MTT[3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazol-2-yl)-2.5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide] assay for cell survival and proliferation. PC-1 showed active against L-1210, P-388 leukemia, human lung, stomach, prostate, bladder and breast cancer cell lines, and the antitumor activity of these compounds were comparable or superior to those of PC-2 and displatin. The nephrotoxicities of PC-1 and PC-2 were found quite less than that of cisplatin using MTT and [3H] thymidine uptake in rabbit proximal tubule cells and human kidney cortical cells. Based on these results, this novel platinum (II) complex compound (PC-1) represents a valuable lead in the development of a new anticancer chemotherapeutic agent capable of improving antitumor activity and low nephrotoxicity.
