  • This study investigated the colors of the costumes and backgrounds of characters in the films "Thirst" and "Mother" from an integrated perspective. As a study method, ten scenes per film, which contained the characters and backgrounds from the start to the end of the DVDs of "Thirst" and "Mother" were examined. For integrated color analysis of the costumes and backgrounds, the colors of the captured scenes were simplified to extract representative colors, and then color palettes were presented according to the ratio of area. The colors of costumes were analyzed by recognition through the eyes based on the I.R.I. Hue and Tone 120. Furthermore, the color images of the two films were analyzed using the I.R.I. adjective image scales and the I.R.I. color image scales. The colors of the film "Thirst" were generally low in brightness and high in chroma. They are characterized by dark, gloomy toned-down background in the first half, highly chromatic vivid background in the second half, and the contrast of purple blue colors and red colors. The colors of the film "Mother" are characterized by complementary colors between background and costume colors, and various tones of blue and green colors. From the aspect of color tones, they were relatively high in brightness compared to the film "Thirst" but low in chroma. On the I.R.I. adjective image scale, contrasting adjectives were extracted simultaneously from the film "Thirst" as the adjectives were evenly distributed at hard, dynamic and static, whereas the adjectives extracted from the film "Mother" were distributed at hard and statistic. On the I.R.I. color image scale, both films were located at hard, but the film "Thirst" was located at dynamic whereas the film "Mother" was located at static.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of color characteristics on tactile sensation / sensibility image of silk fabrics and to provide prediction models for their tactile sensation/sensibility image by both mechanical properties and color characteristics. As results, some of tactile sensation/sensibility terms including 'smooth', 'buoyant', 'thick', 'stiff', 'unique', 'casual', 'rural', and 'modern' seemed to be influenced by color characteristics such as achromatic/chromatic and hue / tone as well as by mechanical properties of silk. Moreover, red or green silk was more strongly felt than gray ones for 'thick' and 'stiff' as well as pale or vivid was. On the other hands, 'Rural' and 'casual' were respectively evaluated more highly for green, pale, or vivid silk. These results imply that color could give an effect on subjective tactile sensation / sensibility. Finally, prediction models for some of tactile sensation / sensibility of silk fabrics by both mechanical properties and color characteristics were established.

  • This study investigates effective ways to help users form a correct mental model of the hierarchical information space (HIS) in small display. The focus is the effect of color cue on understanding the structure and navigating the information space. The concept of color space (CS) corresponds well to the HIS - one color has a unique position in the CS as a piece of information does in HIS. In this study, we empirically examined two types of color cue, namely, categorical and depth cue. Hue was used as a categorical cue and tone was used as a depth cue. In our experiment, we evaluate the effectiveness of the color cues in the mobile internet system. Subjects were asked to perform four searching tasks and four comparison tasks. The results of experiment reveal that the categorical cues significantly improve the user's mental model whereas decrease navigation performances. The depth cues cannot aid in understanding the HIS as well as improve navigation performances. This study concludes with limitations of the study and descriptions of future studies.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the color characteristics of menswear in different cities, focusing on the Paris, Milan, New York, Tokyo, and London collections. To answer the research question, the sampled colors were classified according to their hues and tones for frequency analysis and cross-analysis. The results are as follows: 'Red', which appeared frequently in the S/S and F/W seasons, was a core color in menswear design, and regardless of the season, 'blackish tones' were most commonly used. The cross-analysis uncovered a significant difference in the trends of hues in the F/W season between the cities. The colors that were more frequently used among the cities were as follows: 'blue-green' in the Paris collection, 'blue' and 'purple' in the Milan collection, 'purple' and 'purple-blue' in the London collection, 'yellow' in the New York collection, and 'red' and 'green' in the Tokyo collection. This study illustrates the significance of the F/W season's use of colors in menswear design and discovered through analysis that hues, rather than tones, were used to express individuality. These results are expected to be used as basic data for the analysis of menswear design trends.

  • Recent color plans in school buildings are made by experts through public offerings for prizes for designs etc in relatively many cases. But it is necessary to review if such color plans are actually well conform to students' emotions and what trend the color plans made as such have. Therefore, this study examined and analyzed the exterior colors of the school buildings planned by public offerings for prizes for designs and reviewed the result comparing to the color preferences of students that had already been studied to figure out the differences between existing theories and the realities. And it was examined what differences were existing in the trends of color plans and color images examined between each of school levels. The result of the study compared to theories is as follows. First, when the color distributions were reviewed for each school level, it could be confirmed that the overall distributions moved from Y category to B category and whereas warm colors were more widely distributed and the number of colors were greater compared to cold colors in case of elementary schools, the distributions of warm colors gradually decreased as school level moves to high schools. Second, the color use distributions of elementary school students were revealed to be more diversified than middle and high school students and also the number of colors used was 9.5 in average in elementary school and middle schools and high schools were similar to each other with average 5.86 colors in middle schools and 6.33 colors in high schools showing a little differences in color use distributions among school levels of elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. Third, in case of elementary schools, except main colors, both of subsidiary colors and emphasizing colors had the distributions of warm colors of R, YR, Y categories and cold colors of B, PB categories and this is also consistent with the results of existing research results indicating that low grade students prefor for warm colors and high grade students prefer for cold colors. Fourth, in case of middle schools and high schools, although the distributions of warm colors decreased, the distributions of warm colors and cold colors were revealed to be similar. This is considered to be consistent with the existing research results indicating that girl students prefer for warm colors even if their ages go up. Fifth, as for the images of main colors, subsidiary colors and emphasizing colors resulted from the comparisons by solid color Image Scales and adjective Image Scales, first, in case of main colors, natural images or clear images appeared the most in all of elementary schools, middle schools and high schools indicating that basically calmness is emphasized with soft images rather than hard images and static images rather than dynamic images. Also, in case of subsidiary colors or emphasizing colors, cheerful images or splendid images are also seen to decrease as school level goes from elementary schools to high schools in adjective Image Scales and this is considered to reflect the color sentiment differences between children and juveniles based on ages.

  • Today the importance of color image is increasing for the brands as well as the products. This study was performed to classily the color image of baby's wear brands and to suggest how the color is effectively planned for the image. In order to classify the color image of 7 baby's wear brands, color palettes of 7 brands were also made by 6 subgroups, each season(summer, fall) by gender(boy, girl, new-born) and based on manufactured garments which were collected by on-line shops. Questionaries were organized with 40 pieces of the color palettes prints for 6 subgroups by 7 brands and 20 baby's wear image adjectives. The total 320 copies were used in the survey to students majored in fashion design. Questionaries were analyzed by factor analysis from SPSS 12.0 package program. There are 4 main factors for the color images of baby's wear brands, 'liveliness', 'loveliness', 'chic', 'neatness'. Not hue, but tone is more important to express the characteristics of color images of baby's wear brands. Also white and black are importantly used for baby's wear. The consistency of the brand color image across gender and season is very important to identify and strengthen the color image of brand.

  • In these days, the technology development of the imaging/optic industry and the digital broadcasting replace the classic CRT with the new display devices that is getting slimmer and larger. Especially, when the general TV signal is applied directly to the wide gamut display using LED or laser, which can display higher chromatic colors that can't be reproduced on CRT, the color distortion occurs and it causes serious problems. Thus, in this paper the gamut mapping is studied, which gets rids of the color distortion and utilizes the wider color gamut than that of the CRT sufficiently. In the gamut mapping the general mapping concept is the increasement of the chroma on the same hue plane but it causes the over chromatic enhancement. So, the vector mapping, which increases the lightness md the chroma at the same time, is proposed to prevent the side effect. In the vector mapping the chromaticity is maintained constantly, hence the image can be seen more natural than that of the chroma mapping. By using the gamut fitting, it is compensated that the tone disappearance or the contour effect that is arose from the geometric properties of the input and the output color gamut. These gamut mapping and gamut fitting can prevent the color distortion and reproduce the natural image on the wide gamut displays.
