  • This study has the purpose to reveal the differences of residents' satisfaction level & demand of community environment and recognized residents' improvement priority of community environment at 3 complexes at the big city in the provinces. The 3 residential complexes had differentiated developmental concepts; the residence-oriented complex, the residence-government mixed complex with an eco-friendly concept, and the outskirt residence-industry mixed complex. Followings are the results of the study. 1) The satisfaction of residents in the community environment correlates with the increasing convenience facilities after construction. In the new outskirt complexes of smaller cities, dissatisfaction occurs more with public transportation rather than the road system, so that efficient public transportation systems, inner and neighboring areas, is requisite. 2) Even in the residence-oriented complex, the education environment does not entirely account for satisfaction level; the green environment is also second in priority after the education environment. In the residence-government mixed complex with an eco-friendly concept, a good natural environment does not entirely account for satisfaction level; education environment is also second in priority after the natural environment. The supply of sufficient schools may be fulfilled in the ways of reform of the education zone with neighboring existing residential areas. In the outskirt residence-industry mixed complex of smaller cities, priority was placed more on the location and convenience; this explains the complex's poor access to downtown.

The major findings are as follows. 1) The kitchen space in mountain areas remained in the state of a combined style(depicting both western and traditional styles), while the kitchen space in the plains after the 1980s showed a tendency toward the western style. Generally speaking, the physical state of kitchens in mountain farmhouses, therefore, was at a low level in comparison with that of the plains. 2) The kitchen improvement projects of Sae-Ma-Eul Movement fostered a trend toward the western and combined style kitchens in the plains, but it did exert a little influence only on a part of the four mountain areas, and it resu]led in a combination of both styles. 3) Among the socio-demographic characteristics under consideratien. only the level of education achieved by the wi fe was found to be a determinant factor of the kitchen type in the mountain areas. but the level of education achieved by the husband and the family life cycle were two determinant factors in the plains. Under the category of family life style. the factors affecting the kitchen type in the mountain areas were cooking-heating fuel and the position of the refrigerator, while the main factors in p]ains were the place and the method of eating. cooking-heating fuel, the position of refrigerator, and numbers of family-memorials.

  • The aim of this study lies in answering the question "How to form weighting cells to enhance sample representativeness in telephone, Internet and mobile surveys\ulcorner". For this, we explored 2% raw data of Year 2000 Population and Housing Census of Korea looking for meaningful patterns for ownership of telephones, the usage of Internet and/or mobile phones. We found that telephone coverage rates vary significantly by household size; 84.6% for one member households, contrasting 98.5% for two-or-more member households. Thus, telephone survey samples need to be weighted differently in sub-groups by household size for proportional representation of target population. Searching socio-demographic factors influencing the use of Internet by C5.0 tree models, we found that education levels and the occupation (or housing type, the automobile ownership) are two most important factors in addition to gender and age. Thus, surveyor might form weighting cells by such factors at the stage of post-stratification or set quotas, a priori, proportional to size of the cells by such factors. For mobile surveys, we approached similarly and found that education levels and the occupation (or the automobile ownership, marriage status) are two additional factors that may be used in forming weighing cells or in setting quotas for cells.

  • This study was conducted to examine elderly users' satisfaction with welfare services and the environments of the senior citizen centers in mid-sized and small cities in Korea. Three hundred and two elderly users were surveyed for this study. Age and gender differences in the level of satisfaction were found. The male elderly users and older users were more satisfied with the education programs than the female and younger users. The elderly people who reside in single-family residences were more satisfied with the educational programs and part-time job opportunities offered at the center than the elderly users who were living in apartment buildings. This could be explained by the fact that dwellers of single housing had more freedom and more room for self-regulation in scheduling their program participation, whereas the apartment building residents had rarely experienced social exchanges with their neighbors. There were significant differences in satisfaction with the environments of the centers by gender, marital status, age, level of education, religion, and housing type. The group differences were explained by the abundance of community activities that are centered around younger and female participants. Based on these findings, it is suggested that more specialized educational and social programs should be developed for the younger users in their early 60s, that co-ed religious activities and hobby programs should be expanded, and that the home-visiting welfare staff should regularly provide the elderly users the information on programs and activities.
