Housing is one of the most important factors determining the quality of rural life. Housing condition in rural area has been deteriorating over the past years in spite of many rural development programs. Korean government formulated 'Rural Housing Environment Improving Plan' including rural rent-house program in 2006. This study aims to find the fundamental intension of rural people for adopting the rent-house system in rural area. To do this, background and current state of rural rent-house program are presented and the demand for rural rent-house is analyzed based on the survey results done by Korea Rural Community Corporation in 2005. Major findings from the survey analysis imply that the size/age/ownership of the current houses and the age of householders, motive and time period of current residing, and components of households are significant factors when considering whether they are willing to apply rural rent-house.
This paper analyzes how and why household debt distribution by the householder age has changed over the past decade both in Korea and the US. Data shows that the proportion of household debt held by younger households has decreased, while that held by older households has increased. Empirical analysis shows that a change in the demographic distribution of householders is the main driving force that has shifted the household debt distribution. Given that demographic aging is an inevitable trend, the proportion of household debt held by older households is also expected to increase. Therefore, the Korean government must preemptively prepare for the household debt problem, especially for debt held by older households, by strengthening macro-prudential policies, preventing asset price deflation, restructuring household debt contract structures, and reforming labor market inflexibility.

In the studies on residential move, there has been tendency of dichotomy where short distance moves are largely caused by housing to adjust to changes in households while long distance moves are induced by shift in labor market. However, some empirical studies have proven that residential move is so complex process that the simple dichotomy should be elaborated. In this sense, the present study seeks to identify compounded course of residential move in Korea. In determining migration history, families with younger householders, renters, householders with higher educational attainment and smaller households show a higher probability to move. In case of mobility, women were more prone to move compared to man. Women compared to man, older age augmented the probability to own a house after migration. Families with householders following an occupation of sales and technical service showed lowest tendency to own houses while it marked the highest in the group of professionals. Higher land price of a region was negatively related to owning houses after migration. The present study revealed that factors in macro level as well as micro level significantly affect the move of individuals with varying effects in accordance with migration history.
The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of residential interior design according to social classes in Korean television dramas. To achieve the study purpose content analysis through slides and video tapes was used. Eighty three houses out of twenty eight dramas from 1990 to 1996 were classified into three classes ; upper class middle-upper class middle-lower class. Those houses were analyzed based one the five review points : total interior images finishing materials window treatments furniture and accessories. Background: Health is affected by various local factors. This study aims to investigate the age-standardized mortality variation of Seoul as well as the characteristics of the factors related to the mortality variation. Methods: The Korea Community Health Survey data, Seoul Survey data, Seoul statistics, and e-regional indicators of the National Statistical Office were used. To investigate the basic boroughs standardized mortality variation in Seoul, external quotient, coefficient of variation (CV), and systematic component of variation (SCV) values were suggested; correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted to investigate the characteristics related to standardized mortality rate. Results: The highest and the lowest standardized mortality rate of Seoul by boroughs had as much as 1.4 times difference; a low level of variation was shown in CV by 8.2; and was shown in SCV by 79. As a result of the multiple regression analysis of the factors that affect standardized mortality variation, the higher the rate of householders with college or higher, the lower the standardized mortality rate, and the higher the high-risk drinking rate, the higher the standardized mortality rate. Of the two, the rate of householder with a degree equivalent or higher than college was shown to have the biggest impact, followed by high-risk drinking rate. Conclusion: We found a variation in age-standardized mortality rate of boroughs in Seoul. The results suggest that policy makers should take into account socioeconomic environmental characteristics of community in developing community-based health promotion rather than focusing on lifestyle changes of residents.

To improve family well-being of single-parents, the utilization of familial social resources-including formal supports, informal supports, and social capital-has become one of the most important family resource management issues. The purpose of this study was to compare the levels of familial social resources of single-parent households with those of two-parent households and to investigate the differences according to three factors, specifically poverty, family types by gender and age of parent, and householders' employment. In addition, the determinants of single-parent households' wellbeing were analyzed from two perspectives: economic wellbeing and psychological life satisfaction. Data from the 5th wave of the Korean Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS) were used. The major findings were as follows. First, single-parent households utilized their familial social resources more actively than their counterparts, especially in terms of the formal support of child care. Second, single parent households utilized their familial social resources differently in relation to poverty, family types, and parents' employment. Third, the determinants of economic wellbeing and psychological life satisfaction were different according types of familial social resources. Based on these empirical results, policy implications for the future economic wellbeing of baby boomers were provided.
The purpose of this research is to analyze the wealth effects of home-owning baby-boomers on household consumption on non-durable goods in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. In so doing, this empirical study utilized the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) of 2002 and 2012. The statistical findings reveal that household wealth in the period had sharply risen in household income, asset, debt and consumption, and the substantial increase came from growing income and consumption embedded into an expansionary stage of the family life cycle. Further, housing wealth had a much greater effect on consumption expenditure than did financial asset in 2012 while financial wealth effect was larger than housing wealth effect in 2002. Housing wealth effects had become far stronger as the age of the baby-boomer householders increased. As the baby-boomers are close to the retirement stage, post-retirement income security becomes of concern, so that the wealth effect of real estate income as an income alternative for retirees is explicit. The results imply that retirement of baby-boomers is likely to reduce consumer spending, aggravating slowdown of the real economy. Thus, diversification of household asset portfolio in a pre-retirement period is of great significance in maintaining adequate household consumption in later life.
Purpose - This study is to verify the mediating effect of voluntariness in retirement and the moderating effects of leisure life to examine which parts of later life preparations have influence on the retired life. Research design, data, and methodology - In this study, the 6th Korean Retirement and Income Study was conducted on 5,254 members of households with householders over the age of 50. To examine the relationship between later life preparation and retired life, this study used personal data based on the serial number of the household members. Results - First, physical preparation for later life had a positive influence on retired life satisfaction among retirement satisfaction. People showed higher retired life satisfaction. Secondly, physical preparation for later life had a positive influence on satisfaction over relationship after retirement among retirement satisfaction. People showed higher satisfaction over relationship after retirement when they were more physically prepared for later life. Conclusions - In particular, leisure life had a mediating effect for the influence of physical preparation for later life on the retired life. Also, leisure life and physical preparation for later life showed a close influencing relationship. People showed active leisure life and higher retired life satisfaction when they were more physically prepared for later life.

The purpose of this study was to examine low-income households' financial problems and the demand for financial counseling. For these purposes, a survey of 500 low-income households was conducted by an on-line survey company. The results were as follows. First, four types of low-income households classified by income and job criteria were: the not-working poorest (16.2%), the working poor (27.0%), the not-working low-income (13.8%), and the working low-income (43.4%). Also, seven areas of financial problems were found through factor analysis. They included difficulty of survival, insufficient funds for special expenditures, defaults on financial obligation, decrease of income, increase of debts, emotional anguish, and difficulty in meeting living expenditures. 61.6% of respondents requested financial counseling, and 44.5% of them preferred internet counseling to counseling by phone or in-person, while 49.5% desired access to public counseling organizations. The five types of financial counseling content for low-income households that were found through factor analysis were financial planning, credit management, asset management/investment, public support, and use of credit cards. The low-income householders demanded financial planning counseling and pubic support counseling more than the other types of financial counseling. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the demand for financial counseling participation was significantly influenced by age and income. The demand for financial counseling content was age, income, and types of financial problems. Therefore, general financial counseling programs for low-income households should be expanded. Furthermore, those counseling programs can be useful if they not only include credit management but also financial planning, economic support information and savings.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the economic characteristics of single-person households and explain the effects of them on the food service industry. Methods: For this paper, I analysed the data related with single-person households and the food service industry in two surveys, Household Income and Expenditure Survey and Wholesale and Retail Trade Survey published by Statistics Korea from 2006 to 2015, with an empirical test performed utilizing these data. The indicators of the age of householders, disposable income per capita, and the rate of household of worker were compared between single and multi-person households. Furthermore, sales and the number of establishments in the food service industry were used as industry-variables, and disposable income, eating-out expenses and the rate of single-person households as the household-variables were used in a panel analysis. Results: The results showed that household incomes were lower, age of householder was higher, and the percentage of household of worker was lower in single-person households in contrast to multi-person households. According to the empirical analysis, eating-out expenses of single-person households, in comparison to multi-person households, has significantly positive effects on the growth of the food service industry. This means that the recent trend of increasing numbers of single-person households may help the growth of the food service industry. Conclusions: The growth in the rate of single-person households has been one of the most striking demographic shifts in recent decades. Their economic characteristics and the effects were analyzed to give the managers in the food service industry and the policy-makers useful information in dealing with this new trend. Moreover, in considering the fact that single-person households eat out more frequently than multi-person households, the food service business should develop the managerial strategies focused on acclimatizing to single-person households.
