Drying Kinetics of Onion Slices in a Hot-air Dryer

  • Onion slices were dehydrated in a single layer at drying air temperatures ranging from $50{\sim}70^{\circ}C$ in a laboratory scale convective hot-air dryer at an air velocity of 0.66 m/s. The effect of drying air temperature on the drying kinetic characteristics were determined. It was found that onion slices would dry within $210{\sim}460\;min$ under these drying conditions. Moisture transfer during dehydration was described by applying the Fick's diffusion model and the effective diffusivity changed between $1.345{\times}10^{-8}$ and $2.658{\times}10^{-8}\;m^2/s$. A non-linear regression procedure was used to fit 9 thin layer drying models available in the literature to the experimental drying curves. The Logarithmic model provided a better fit to the experimental drying data as compared to other models. Temperature dependency of the effective diffusivity during the hot-air drying process obeyed the Arrhenius relationship with estimated activation energy being 31.36 kJ/mol. The effect of the drying air temperature on the drying model constants and coefficients were also determined.

  • In order to prevent the environmental pollution, the dryers are commonly used to treat sludge that one of sewages is polluting the quality of water. Generally, the drying method is various as to the property of material and use. Rotary dryer is a good apparatus to treat them. The rotary dryer is the way that is to make substance transmission and heating using hot air between sludge particles and heated gas. In this paper, we performed a numerical analysis of the inner air flow of the ANDRICH type dryer through the changing rotational speed from 3rpm to 10rpm. A PIV can be applied to research a inner flow of ANDRICH type dryer.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the performance of a heat recovery heat pump dryer using a R245fa refrigerant experimentally. In this study, the main components of the heat pump dryer were an evaporator, a compressor, a condenser, and an expansion valve. As a result, when the amount of refrigerant varied from 15 kg to 16 kg, the hot air outlet temperature in the condenser and the heat transfer rate were almost kept constant. Therefore, the amount of refrigerant at 16 kg was considered to be a suitable amount in the heat pump. As the air inlet velocity varied from 0.5 m/s to 1.5 m/s, the highest temperature in the condenser could be obtained when the air inlet velocity was 0.5 m/s. The heat transfer rate, system (COP), and hot air outlet temperature were 5.6 kW, 3.4, and $102.5^{\circ}C$, respectively, when the bypass ratio and water temperature were 0% and $60^{\circ}C$.

  • Recently, instead of hot air type dryers that require a lot of heat, energy-efficient heat pump dryers have been used in various fields such as paper, textile, wood, food, etc. In this paper, the characteristics of heat pump cycle were theoretically evaluated with hot-gas bypass system to further improve the energy efficiency by minimizing the use of electric heaters in early warm-up stage of the dryers for frozen agricultural products. In addition, damper system that leads outside air to flow into the dryer were optimized to obtain extra heat for higher energy efficiency.

  • In tradition, there have been two kinds of drying methods, which are sun drying and artificial drying. The sun drying method which has been adopted traditionally has been replaced by the hot-air drying method which is one of the most general methods of artificial drying, with its simple drying system, low initial cost of drying plant, and easy operating method. But the hot-air drying method has some defects; (1) much energy loss happens due to the discharge of hot air during the drying process, (2) control of drying rate is not easy on account of changing relative humidity of inlet air for uniform hot air temperature, (3) high temperature of foods in drying process brings about the production of low-grade drying products. Vacuum drying takes advantage of energy saving and mass production because it reduces the drying time by increasing the drying rate under low temperature condition. The aim of this paper is to develop the low temperature vacum dryer, with low initial investments and operating costs, easy operating method and trouble-free operation.

Energy Performance Comparison of Electric Heater and Geothermal Source Heat Pump type Agricultural Hot Air Dryers (전기히터식 및 지열원 히트펌프식 농산물 열풍건조기의 에너지 성능 비교)

  • Energy performance of electric heater and geothermal source heat pump type hot air dryers are compared in this study. For set temperatures of $30^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$, radish is dried from initial mass 60 kg until it gets 5 kg, where the difference equals the amount of water removed. As set temperature is increased, drying time is shortened for both electric heater and heat pump types, however energy efficiency is decreased due to increasing electricity consumption. Moisture extraction rate(MER) of electric heater is 2.58~2.84 kg/h, and for heat pump type 2.56~2.71 kg/h, showing little difference between the two types. Specific moisture extraction rate (SMER) of electric heater is 0.94~0.96 kg/kWh, and for heat pump type 1.72~2.21 kg/kWh. SMER of heat pump type is greater by 0.78~1.25 kg/kWh than the electric heater hot air dryer, which is 1.8~2.3 times better in terms of energy efficiency.

  • About 55% of total energy is consumed in the industrial division. The industrial heat pump application will show magnificent energy saving effect as well as higher cost efficiency because of larger energy consuming volume of each facility and longer operation hour and higher stability against seasonal temperature change. Over 90% of dryer for industrial usage has hot wind heat source and hot wind dryer is the representative type covering 68.7% while its 30 ~ 50% lower heat efficiency causes lots of energy loss by exhaust air. Re-usage of exhaust air can improve energy efficiency of dryer because 68% heat energy or 78% of hot air lose in exhaust air. Therefore, high temperature heat pump dryer can be the best alternative. Comparing to the existing dryer with 30% ~ 50% energy efficiency, newly developing high temperature heat pump dryer will enhance energy efficiency up to 60% ~ 80% efficiency. In this paper, heat pump system for high temperature was designed, constructed and tested. The results have shown that system COPh is estimated as 3.3.

And reasonable relation was found between analysis and experiment.

  • The curing processes of waterborne adhesives are in general undergone by using hot-air dryer. The hot-air dryer curing the adhesives with heat has a disadvantage of requiring high temperature over $100^{\circ}C$ as well as curing time as long as 20 min. When it comes to the heat control, high temperature open disturbs the adhesion of substrates by extremely lowering the viscosity of the adhesives. Furthermore, the humidity resulting from the drying process makes the curing condition irregularly. In this report, dehumidifying membrane dryer was used in order to keep the curing process same by removing humidity caused by the evaporation of water during the drying process, and to shorten the curing time. Here, we compared the peel strength of attached substrates in the dehumidifying membrane dryer to find out appropriate curing condition and confirm the effects of the dehumidifying membrane.
