Studies with the Tobacco Mosaic Viruses; W. S Kim, and So, I Y., (Dept. of biology Sung Kyun Kwan Univer. Seoul, Korea.). Using the common strain of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) which was sent from the Dept. of Plant Pathology, University of Wisconsin, U.S.A. as control virus, a possible new strain of tobacco mosaic virus (SMV) was isolated from tobacco leaves collected from Tobacco Experiment Station farms as well as from various blends of manufactured Korean cigaretts. SMV was isolated by single lesion isolation method and by inoculating the virus through various species of host plants. The two viruses, TMV and SMV were indentified by the difference in symptoms, host range, serological reaction, and electron micrograpy. As the results of the above experiment the author believes the virus isolate SMV is a different strain of TMV. The experimental evidences that SMV belongs to the TMV group are as follows; 1. Both viruses produced local necrotic lesions on Nicotiana glutimosa L. 2. Both showed a dilution end point of $10^8$. 3. Aphid transmission was failed with the viruses. 4. Both had an isoelectric point around pH 3.3. 5. Two viruses were serological reactive. 6. The size of the virus particles was around 270-300mu as they were observed under the electron microscope. The virus SMV, however, is different from the common strain of TMV and the experimental evidences are as follows; 1. SMV produced quite different symptoms from TMV on various host plants like tobacoo(Nicotiana tabacum L., White Burley), Nicotiana rustica L., Chenopodium Koreanse Nakai. Bata vulgaris L., and Datura tatula L., SMV produced distinct local lesions on these host plants whereas TMV incited largely mosaic diseases. 2. The serological titers obtained from the heterologous combinations were lower than those from homologous combinations of antigens and antiser.
We found skin flukes in snubnose pompano (Trachinotus blochii) from a public aquarium and attempted clear identification of them to the species level by morphology and molecular analyses. Skin flukes were collected from snubnose pompano showing dyspnea, anorexia and mild hemorrhage on the skin. All the fish samples (n=2) were infected with the flukes on the skin, gill and eyes, covered with excessive mucus. The isolated worms were transferred for making slide specimen and PCR amplification targeting 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (mt cox1) and cytochrome b (Cytb) genes for further analyses. Morphology and measurements data of our slide specimen coincided with those of Neobenedenia girellae. The sequence data of 2 genes (28S rDNA and Cytb) and the phylogenetic trees revealed that our specimen consistently belonged to the N. girellae clade. For 18S rDNA and mt cox1 genes, there was no sequence of either of these 2 Neobenedenia species from the type host available in GenBank. This is the first record of N. girellae in snubnose pompano, but it is still unclear if the snubnose pompano is a natural host for N. girellae or not because N. girellae is known to have an unusual broad host range and the host-switching can occur particularly in captive conditions such as aquarium or aquaculture facilities.
Marine birnavirus (MABV) has wide host range in marine organisms. To clarify various infection properties of MABV in different host species, in vitro study was performed by subculture for 10 passages in several fish cell lines. In CHSE-214, RTG-2 and RSBK-2 cells, the virus produced high yield of virus. Typical CPE with high protein expression was observed in these cells. On the contrary, the virus grown in EPC, FHM and BF-2 cells exhibited no CPE appearance although virus protein was detected. In EPC and FHM cells, the virus titer increased in later passages. The plaque size was distinctly bigger in CHSE-214, RTG-2 and RSBK-2 cells than in other cell lines. The nucleotide sequence of VP2/NS junction region on genome segment A exhibited one specific nucleotide change at 195. The different infection properties in several cell types performed in the present work might reflect in vivo MABV infection in various host species occurring in natural conditions.
Different types of smut fungi have been reported from different geographical places, depending on the distribution of host plant. Therefore, a survey was conducted to investigate the host plant of smut fungi and occurrence situations in three Asian countries. As a result 12 genera of 4 families and 19 species,24 families 87 genus and 191 species, and 12 families 140 species were occurred in Korea, Japan and China, respectively. Six genera(Enty-loma, Yilletia, Sorosporium, Sphacelotheca, Urocysitis, Ustilago) of korean smut fungi species were reported until 1998. In Japan, Ito reported for first time 14 genera and 140 species of smut fungi in 19361 and then were more described into 17 genera 114 species by Kaki hits a in 1984. Two genera (Schizonella and Namnfldtiomyces) and 8 species were newly listed, later by other researchers. In China, Ling reported that smut fungi classified into 14 genera, 109 species in 1953. In addition, Liroa, Glomosporium, Gahmphopora and Microbotryum genus including 49 species were recently reported, thus 18 genera and 158 families of smut fungi in China. These results suggest that the number of plant related with smut fungi is seemed to be more increase in future. Smut disease, occurred on the whole or part of plant and flower.

The Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex includes many phytopathogenic species, causing anthracnose disease on a wide range of host plants and appearing to be globally distributed. Seventy-one Colletotrichum isolates in the complex from different plants and geographic regions in Korea were preserved in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (KACC). Most of them had been identified based on hosts and morphological features, this could lead to inaccurate species names. Therefore, the KACC isolates were re-identified using DNA sequence analyses of six loci, comprising internal transcribed spacer, gapdh, chs-1, his3, act, and tub2 in this study. Based on the combined phylogenetic analysis, KACC strains were assigned to 12 known species and three new species candidates. The detected species are C. siamense (n = 20), C. fructicola (n = 19), C. gloeosporioides (n = 9), C. aenigma (n = 5), C. camelliae (n = 3), C. temperatum (n = 3), C. musae (n = 2), C. theobromicola (n = 2), C. viniferum (n = 2), C. alatae (n = 1), C. jiangxiense (n = 1), and C. yulongense (n = 1). Of these, C. jiangxiense, C. temperatum, C. theobromicola and C. yulongense are unrecorded species in Korea. Host plant comparisons showed that 27 fungus-host associations are newly reported in the country. However, plant-fungus interactions need to be investigated by pathogenicity tests.
The object of this paper is to emphasize the role of 'common limit range property' and utilize the same with variants of R-weakly commuting mappings for the existence of common fixed point under strict contractive conditions in metric spaces. We also furnish some interesting examples to validate our main result. Our results improve a host of previously known results including the ones contained in Pant [Contractive conditions and common fixed points, Acta Math. Acad. Paedagog. Nyhàzi. (N.S.) 24(2) (2008), 257-266 MR2461637 (2009h:54061)]. In the process, we also derive a fixed point result satisfying $\phi$-contractive condition.
The compound SrA1₂(BO₃)₂O is a good host lattice for negative thermal expansion. We have measured thermal expansion over the limited temperature range by X-ray diffraction and ceramic dilatometry. In the aluminum borate compound, a thermal contraction is observed with a coefficient -1.64×10/sup -4/ Å/℃ on the c axis in the temperature range 23∼215℃ and with a maximum change -1.75㎛ in length of a ceramic bar of 20㎜ in the temperature range 110∼170℃, respectively.
This study investigated spawning characteristics of Hangang bitterling, Rhodeus pseudosericeus inside the host mussel, Unio douglasiae sinuolatus at the Heukcheon Stream in Korea from April to June 2017. 327 mussels were collected, among them, 34 (14.1%) were spawned mussels of R. pseudosericeus with glochidia. The mean number of R. pseudosericeus embryos with or without glochidia by the mussel gill position was 5.0±3.58 (range, 1~8) vs. 2.8±2.13 (1~9) in the left outer demibranch, 1.5±0.96 (1~3) vs. 1.7±0.82 (1~3) in the left inner demibranch, 1.4±0.51 (1~2) vs. 2.1±1.85 (1~6) in the right inner demibranch, and 6.4±4.82 (1~20) vs. 3.0±1.86 (1~6) in the right outer demibranch. The frequency of R. pseudosericeus embryos with or without glochidia by the mussel gill position was 82.6% vs. 73.4% in the left outer demibranch, 17.4% vs. 9.4% in the left inner demibranch, 26.1% vs. 15.6% in the right inner demibranch, and 58.7% vs. 67.2% in the right outer demibranch. The mean number of R. pseudosericeus embryos with or without glochidia was 8.5±6.43 (1~23) vs. 4.5±3.38 (1~14). The number and frequency of R. pseudosericeus embryos were higher in the mussel with glochidia and the outer demibranchs than those without glochidia and with inner demibranchs.

To obtain biological basic data for the conservation strategies establishment of a rare mistletoe species, Loranthus tanakae(Loranthaceae) in Korea, the distribution range, habitat characteristics and an assessment of the conservation status on the natural populations of L. tanakae were investigated. As a result, the natural populations of L. tanakae were distributed in Bakdudaegan from Mt. Chiri to Mt Seorak in Korea penninsula, and 97.8% of surveyed individuals of the mistletoe species were found in Gangwon province. In natural populations, 1,385 individuals of L. tanakae were parasitic on 480 host trees, and distributed in sunshiny ridges of mountains of altitude range of 353 m to 1,250 m. The range of host trees of L. tanakae were composed of 5 families, 6 genera, 9 species, 1 subspecies, and of these, Quercus mongolica was preferred with 81.5% (389 trees among 480 host trees). As a result of assessing the conservation status through IUCN, L. tanakae was evaluated as Vulnerable (VU). It was considered that Mt. Seorak, Mt. Taegi and Mt. Odae population as habitats with the highest density of distribution of natural populations of L. tanakae should be designated as the protected areas. Thus, conservation strategies and related methods of the natural populations of L. tanakae were also discussed for the sustainable conservation.
Phages of Lactobaciilus casei (PLC) isolated from plant drainage were classified and characterized. The results are as follows : 1. On the basis of host range pattern, phages could be divided into 2 groups (PLC-B and PLC-C). PLC-B group phages could be further divided into 5 sub-groups $(B_1, \;B_2, \;B_3, \;B_4, \;and\;B_5)$. Although PLC-C group phages had the same host range, they could be also divided into 2 sub-groups $(C_1\;and\;C_2)$ by morphlogical type. 2. It was $B_3$ group phages that represented a major proportion (44.4%) of phages tested. However, $B_1$ group phages were shown to have the widest host range. 3. Electron micrographs revealed that the phages fell into three different morphological types. $(B_1, \;B_2, \;and\;B_3)$ group phages hd a hexagonal head (52nm in diameter) and a sheathless noncontractile (245 nm in length). $B_4\;and\;C_2$ group phages had a hexagonal head (56 nm) and a short flexible tail (169nm) having no sheath. $B_5\;and\;C_1$ group phages were shown to have a hexagonal head (81 nm) and a contractile tail (140 nm) having a sheath, a base plate and tail fibers. 4. The inactivation of the phages by antisera indicated that serological relationships correlated completely with morphological types. 5. $B_1, \;C_1\;and\;C_2$ group phages produced a large (1, 2 mm in diameter) plaque with a clear ring. The morphology of plaques of $B_3\;and\;B_5$ group phages was the same as those produced by the above, but the average plaque sizes for $B_3\;and\;B_5$ were 0.8 mm abd 0.5 mm, respectively. $B_2\;and\;B_4$ group phages produced a small (0.5 mm) turbid plaque with an irregular edge. 6. The latent period and the average burst size of $B_1\;and\;B_3$ group phages were 90 min and 100, respectively. These phages reuqired calcium ions for their miltiplication. 7. $B_3$ group phages could not be absrobed to R-variant $KC_1$. 8. The order of resistance of phages to heat was $B_2\;>\;B_1, B_4\;and\;B_5\;>\;B_3\;and\;C_2, \;B_5$ group phages were more stable than $B_3$ in various pH values. $C_2$ group phages were more sensitive to UV irradiation than $B_1\;and\;B_3$ group phages. 9. Strains YIT9018 and IAM 1043 were induced by mitomycin C treatment. Phage particles detected in the lysates had a hexagonal head (38 and 49 nm, respectively), but no tail. Any sensitive indicator strain could not be isolated in spite of repaeated trials.
