Correlation of Assertiveness and Depression in Clinical Nurses (임상간호사의 자기표현성과 우울의 상관관계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the degrees of assertiveness and depression in clinical nurses and identify the relationships between them. Method: The study included 261 clinical nurses working at one university hospital in the Kyunggi province. The assertiveness scale and a micro simple mental diagnosis test were used to assess the variables. Data were analyzed using SPSS. Results: The average assertiveness score was $3.04{\pm}0.38$ and an average depression score $1.23{\pm}0.71$. Statistically significant differences in assertiveness were identified with regards to marital status (p=.034), type of families (p=.005), number of counselling persons (p=.007), and subjective mental health status (p<.001). In addition, the assertiveness scores were statistically significant based on job position(p=.032), and the levels of satisfaction with nursing job (p=.015). There were significant negative correlations between assertiveness and depression of clinical nurses(r=-.237, p<.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest that assertiveness training for clinical nurses is necessary, especially for novice nurses, in order to decrease the level of depression.

Infection Control of Hospital Nurses: Cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (간호사의 중동호흡기증후군 감염 실태와 감염관리 인식)

  • Purpose: The 2015 Korean Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) outbreaks resulted in 186 cases, with 8% (15 persons) of these being nurses. This study aimed to examine MERS-CoV infection status of clinical nurses and to evaluate perception for infection control. Methods: We investigated the MERS-CoV infection status of nurses using MERS-CoV press release data. We examined and analysed perception for Infection control of 121 nurses of the three MERS intensive therapeutic hospitals in July 2015. Results: One to six nurses per hospital in total 8 health care facilities were infected with MERS-CoV. They mainly had short clinical careers and were unaware of infection possibility. The personal and organizational infection control levels that nurses perceive were low and the relationship between two levels was statistically significant. Conclusion: For promoting health protection and infectious disease management competency of nurses, it is necessary to prepare institutional system for controlling infectious disease.

A Study on the Subjective Musculoskeletal Symptoms Associated with Tasks of Operating Room Nurses (수술실 간호사의 간호업무에 따른 근골격계 자각증상에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: To find the factors of subjective musculoskeletal symptoms associated with the general characteristics and tasks of operating room nurses (OR nurses) and then to use the factors as basic information for preventing and managing musculoskeletal symptoms in OR nurses. Method: This study was an exploratory research. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire from OR nurses working at 8 polyclinics in Korea during the period from July 26 2004 to August 19 2004. The questionnaire contains 7 questions on general characteristics and 18 questions on tasks in the operating room. Result: 187 (75.1%) nurses said they 'had' subjective musculoskeletal symptoms. Statistically significant differences were observed according to clinical career, career as an OR nurse, skillfulness, satisfaction with tasks in the operating room, perception on suitable treatment, care of symptoms by the hospital. weight of hospital linen and weight of a basic operation set (p<.05). Conclusion: Musculoskeletal symptoms complained of by OR nurses were significant. This may cause difficulties in nursing tasks in the operating room. Thus, various arrangements should be made for OR nurse with subjective musculoskeletal symptoms at the early stage.

A Study on Experience of Transition from New Clinical Nurse to Competent Step (임상 신규간호사의 상급 초보자에서 적임자로 되어가는 경험)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to describe nurses' experience in transition from new graduate nurses to professional clinical nursees in a hospital. Methods: Ten new clinical nurses working in a hospital participated in this study. Data collected through in-depth interviews were analyzed using phenomenology. Results: The analysis yielded five core category themes from new nurses for becoming a professional nurse: (a) beginning of hardship journey (b) feeling of inability in workplace (c) struggling hard to develop skills (d) enduring hardships by soothing oneself and peer support (e) beginning of an exciting journey. Conclusion: Over time, new nurses face many difficulties in transition to a professional status. To enhance the role development of new clinical nurses in hospital settings, nursing schools and clinical fields must teach and prepare them. Nursing schools should teach a strong theoretical base as well as nursing skills. In addition, in the clinical nursing department, education, teaching the integrated systems, staff development, support, evaluation, and feedback are needed for new nurses's development.

Influence of Nurses' Sense of Coherence on Their Stress and Quality of Life (간호사의 통합성이 스트레스와 삶의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sense of coherence (SOC) on occupational stress, psychosocial stress and quality of life (QOL) of nurses working in a hospital. Methods: The participants were 401 nurses working in S hospital in Seoul. A stratified random sampling was performed for the all nurses in S hospital which were grouped by age and work unit. Data were collected by a self-report survey. Data analyses included descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson correlations, multiple linear regressions, and ANOVA. Results: This study showed nurses' occupational stress was at high risk and their psychosocial stress, at low risk. It also showed that those two types of stress are mutual predictors for each other and that SOC was a predictor for both types of stress. For QOL, SOC was also a predictor in SF-36 and MCS (Mental Component Summary). Therefore, SOC may be considered as a major controlling factor for stress and QOL. Conclusion: The results indicate the need to develop programs that enhances nurses' SOC, programs that could be utilized as an intervention to reduce nurses' stress and to promote nurses' QOL.

Development and Evaluation of the Effect of a Happiness Self-Coaching Program for New Graduate Nurses Working in Cancer Care Unit (암병동 신규간호사를 위한 행복 셀프코칭 프로그램 개발 및 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effect of a Happiness Self-Coaching program for new graduate nurses working in cancer care units. Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest, nonequivalent control-group design was applied to conduct the study. Study participants were new graduate nurses employed within 12 months and working as shift employees at G university hospital, located in J city. A total of 21 new graduate nurses participated in the study, 10 in the experimental group, and 11 in the control group. The happiness self-coaching program was conducted weekly for 70 minutes from February 1 to June 6, 2016 for 6 weeks. The experimental group received the Happiness Self-Coaching program through lectures, presentation, group activities, and strength card play. Data were analyzed by using repeated measure ANOVA and paired t-test. Results: The experimental group demonstrated significantly higher happiness (F=6.82, p=.003) and self-efficacy (F=3.38 p=.045) levels compared to the control group. Conclusion: The Happiness Self-Coaching program was effective in enhancing new graduate nurses' happiness and self efficacy. It is recommended that nursing organizations to apply the Happiness Self -Coaching program to facilitate adaption of new graduate nurses in cancer care units.

Influencing factors on Moral Distress in Long-term Care Hospital and Facility Nurses

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the level of the moral distress for nurses working in long-term care hospitals or nursing homes, and identify factors that influence the moral distress. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires including the Korean version of Moral Distress Scale-Revised (KMDS-R), Jefferson Empathy Scale for Health professionals (K-JSE-HP), Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire (K-MSQ), and the Hospital Ethical Climate Survey (HECS). A total of 194 nurses from 11 long-term care hospitals or 27 nursing homes completed the structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25. As results, the mean score for moral distress was $73.81{\pm}51.29$ in this study. The moral distress of nurses working at nursing homes was higher than that of nurses working in long-term care hospitals. Among the sub-factors of moral distress, the 'futile care' was the highest score and the 'limit to claim the ethical issue' was the lowest. The main factor affecting moral distress among nurses in this study was the ethical climate of organization. In this paper, we propose that in order to effectively reduce the moral distress of nurses working in a long-term care hospital or a nursing home, it is more impactful to address structural issues related to the caregiver workplace than to adjust individual factors.

Differences in Coping and Adaptation Processing, Organizational Socialization according to the New Nurse's Experience of Bullying in Workplace (신규간호사의 직장 내 괴롭힘 경험에 따른 대처적응과정과 조직사회화의 차이)

  • Purpose: This study is a descriptive study to identify the degree of workplace bullying experience of newly graduated nurses and the difference in coping and adaptation processing, organizational socialization in relation to workplace bullying experience. Methods: The Study participants were newly graduated nurses with 3 months to 1-year clinical experience (N=186) and conveniently sampled from a small to medium-sized hospital located in G Metropolitan City. Data were collected in July 2018, using structured questionnaires. Results: Half of the participants (50.0%) reported workplace bullying experience. Most bulling experiences were person or work related. Newly graduated nurses who experienced bullying in the workplace demonstrated significantly lower coping and adaptation process (t=3.34, p=.001) and organizational socialization (t=7.46, p=<.001) than nurses who did not experience bullying in the workplace. Conclusion: Orientation programs for newly graduated nurses need to include contents that can improve the coping and adaptation process. Nursing managers at small and medium-sized general hospitals should actively support the mentor-mentee program to promote the organizational socialization of newly graduated nurses.

Development and Validation of an Instrument to Measure the Job Satisfaction of Perioperative Nurses (수술실 간호사의 직무 만족도 측정 도구 개발 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable instrument to explore and measure job satisfaction as perceived by perioperative nurses, specifically from the perspective of contemporary perioperative nursing in Korea. Method: Items (69) were developed from the responses to two open-ended questions by 168 perioperative nurses in one teaching hospital; (a) reasons that make work enjoyable, (b) reasons that make work unpleasant. Finally 55 items were selected, excluding items with lower correlation with the total scale. The instrument was completed by 885 perioperative nurses from 89 different hospitals nationwide who were attending the annual conference of the Korean Association Operating Room Nurses (KAORN), yielding a response rate of 95.6%. Results: Ten factors were extracted by factor analysis, which explained 60.0% of the total variance; Reliability and internal consistency were established (Cronbach's alpha=.95). A smaller sample of 39 perioperative nurses completed the instrument on two occasions, with a 2-week interval between. Mean scores were computed and two sets of scores were analyzed by Weighted Kappa (W-Kappa=0.680, p=.029). Conclusion: This instrument is a concise, highly practical and flexible tool, which can be used for the perioperative nurse in a wide range of hospital settings.

The influence of new nurses' knowledge, nursing performance, and educational needs of chemotherapy medication on chemotherapy medication errors (신규간호사의 항암 투약 간호 지식, 수행도 및 교육 요구도가 항암 투약 오류에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the chemotherapy medication errors made by new nurses and to use the results as basic data for the development of a chemotherapy medication nursing education program for new nurses. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 189 new nurses working at a general hospital and a tertiary general hospital in Korea. The data collection period was from January 11 to February 7, 2021. The data collected during this study were analyzed using the IBM SPSS statistics version 25.0 program. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, and logistic regression analysis. Results: One factor influencing chemotherapy medication errors was new nurses' educational needs (odds ratio=.18, p=.005). As educational needs increased, the probability of making errors in medication was reduced by .18. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop a chemotherapy medication education program tailored to the educational needs of new nurses by considering the education period, method, and content, with a focus on the content with high demand from new nurses.
