  • There are increasing demands for the producing and breeding new domestic riding horses for the vitalizations of horse riding industry in Korea, according as 'Horse Industry Support Act' became. In this study, we were to develop the functional relation through the conformation comparison & body composition analysis. 76 heads of 5 breeds utilized for riding horses in Korea were used and their body measurements on 12 items were measured and cluster analysis was conducted to determine the correlation relation among them. The measurements were standardized that (height, croup height, pelvis length), and (hip width, width of pelvis) were highly correlated. In these results of the decision tree, we confirmed to classify the breed type determination by their body measurements (hip height, hip width, head length, croup height). This result can be used as basic data for the development of horse type determination (racing, riding, Riding for the Disabled, Working, or fattening) through the analysis of body composition, and be utilized as the basic data for the producing and breeding new domestic riding horses through the 3D Stereosocpic image system analyze.

  • The Chonmachong (Tumulus No. 155 in Whangnam-dong, Kyungju, Korea), which was unearthed in 1973, is an ancient tomb built in the Shilla Era between the 5th∼6th centuries by the method of Juk-suk-mok-gwak. With the excavation of this tomb more than 11,500 articles of luxurious and splendid relics including gold and silver ornaments, weaponry and horse gears were obtained. Among the excavated articles, the saddle flap with a drawing of flying horse on it is the first relic of its kind from the Shilla Era. and 'Chonma'(a flying horse), the name of the tomb. was named after this drawing. The saddle flap is highly valuable in that it provides the idea of how goad the people of Shilla were at drawing. Although a lot of researches have been released about the relics from the Chonmachong, this study is to focus on the fabrics from the excavation, all of which are in the Kyongiu Museum's collection. The findings of this study are as follows : 1 The subject of this study is mainly on the fabrics used in horse gears, the pieces of cloth that were used to spread on a saddle or to underlay beneath a saddle. As the Shilla Dynasty tried to restrict excessive ornamentation on horses and it is assumed that the fabrics used are different. according to the social status. 2. The subject articles are four plain fabrics, three fabrics of combined -construction and one braid, the warp-faced compound woven silks of combined-construction was found for the first tinge in Korea, and is the typical quality sick with patterns woven with dyed threads in different colors. 3. It is ascertained by the Chonmachong excavation that polychrome woven silk was used not only for the clothes of the upper classes but also for the ornaments of their horses in the Era of the Three Kingdoms.

  • The welfare of horses depends on satisfying both the physiological and psychological needs of the animal. The object of this study was to evaluate fence safety at the horse farm. A Thoroughbred colt with cribbing was found dead in a paddock. The fence of paddock is a four-pipe fencing. He cribbed the 2nd pipe from the top. But he couldn't pull his face because his incisors acted as hooks and two ramuses of the mandible was entrapped in a top pipe. So he was embarrassed and went down while he terribly struggled to get out his face. Finally, he was strangulated to death. Safe fencing is essential on a horse farm. The function of these fences are to protect the horses but it was more of a hazard. In order to safe management of horses, facial length of the horse and the pipe interval of the fence should be considered. Further research is needed to put a muzzle on the horses while they are at a paddock. This study provides important benchmarks for the equine industry to consider fence type and evaluate fence safety.

  • A new chemiluminescence immunochromatographic analysis system with high sensitivity and high reproducibility was developed for the determination of microcystins (MCs) in water. Horse radish peroxidase (HRP) labeled microcystin monoclonal antibody was used for the sensitive chemiluminescence detection. The chemiluminescence immunochromatographic analysis system was composed of microcystin LR (MCLR)-monoclonal antibody (mAb)-Horse Radish Peroxidase (HRP) conjugate, MCLR-BSA conjugate, luminol, hydrogen peroxide mixture solution, an immunochromatographic assay strip and luminometer. To detect the concentration of microcystins in water, we utilized one spot analysis of the strip instead of flow type analysis. We could detect the microcystins in water at a concentration as low as 9.45 pg/mL with the chemiluminescence (CL) detection.

  • A 4-year-old gelding Thoroughbred racehorse, which had been undergoing antibiotic therapy at a local veterinary clinic, was referred to the KRA veterinary center with a 20-day history of continuous right nasal discharge. Patient's history, endoscopic examination, and radiographic examination revealed primary maxillary sinusitis. Under sedation, surgical intervention was performed to collect samples and remove the accumulated mucopurulent exudate in the sinus. Swab samples were collected from the sinus during surgery for cytology and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Only one type of bacteria was cultured, and molecular analyses of 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences identified it as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The isolate was resistant to multiple antibiotics, which are frequently used in equine practice. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was chosen based on antibiotic susceptibility test, trephination, and sinus lavage using saline were applied to treat bacterial sinusitis. The clinical signs improved after 1 month and the patient resumed training. This report describes S. aureus isolated from bacterial maxillary sinusitis in a horse and its antibiotic susceptibility.

  • The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using the so-called "double-sandwich"technique was applied to determine Clostridium botulinum type F toxin. Polystyrene tubes were coated with horse anti-type F toxin serum and then toxin sample was added. The tubes were subsequently treated with rabbit anti-type F toxin IgG and sheep anti-rabbit serum IgG-horseradish peroxidase conjugate. By this technique, about 10 mouse intraperitoneal 50% lethal doses (ip LD/50/) of type F toxin could be detected. Low back-ground reading was achieved with the use of phosphate-buffered saline containing 0.05% Tween 20 and 1% bovine serum albumin as diluents of rabbit IgG and conjugate. Addition of EDTA in the diluents of toxin increased ELISA extinction value significantly. No cross-reaction was observed with botulinum type A and B toxin, but type E toxin gave sleight cross-reaction.

  • We have studied the effects of serum concentration and initial cell density on hybridoma cell growth and monoclonal antibody (MAb) production at various media supplemented with different types of serum. The types of serum were fetal bovine sera, newborn bovine calf sera, calf sera including supplemented calf sera, horse serum, and goat serum. The concentrations of each serum were 0.5, 1.25, 2.5, and 5% (v/v) and the inoculum densities were $5{\times}10^4, 1{\times}10^5, 2{\times}10^5,$ cells/ml. The hybridoma cell growth and anti-Hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBsAg) MAb production were found to be enhanced by increasing the serum concentration and by increasing inoculum density regardless of serum type. We found that test sera purchased from different companies show different effects on cell growth and MAb production, although they are the same type of serum.
