  • Prader-Willi syndrome is a complicated genetic disorder caused by a mutation on chromosome 15q11-13. The disease results in morbid obesity due to hyperphagia, growth disturbance, multiple endocrine problems from hypopituitarism, developmental delay, and cognitive or behavioral problems. Recombinant human growth hormone has been used to improve body composition and muscle mass, which plays a main role in treating patients with Prader-Willi syndrome. We describe previous studies showing the efficacy and safety of growth hormone treatment in children with Prader-Willi syndrome and provide treatment guidelines. Growth hormone therapy could be beneficial for children with Prader-Willi syndrome and improve their quality of life.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the degree of menopause symptoms and associated factors in patients with breast cancer who were receiving hormone therapy. Methods: Data were collected with questionnaires from 150 patients with breast cancer who had been on hormone therapy at a hospital in Seoul. Data were analyzed with the t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient to compare the degree of menopause symptoms by demographic, clinical and psychological factors. Results: The mean menopause symptoms score was $13.39{\pm}7.97$. Most participants reported having hot flushes and sweating (75.3%), physical and mental exhaustion (82.7%) and sexual problems (64.7%). Menopause symptoms and depression were correlated with each other (p<.01). Somato-vegetative symptoms were different significantly by age, menopausal status at time of operation, occupation and tumor. Psychological symptoms were different significantly by marital status, operation type and chemotherapy. Urogenital symptoms were different significantly by prior history of cancer, occupation, operation type and radiation therapy. Conclusion: These findings can be used to provide tailored nursing interventions by identifying high risk groups for menopausal symptom among breast cancer patients receiving hormone therapy.

  • Objective: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate potential effects of HRT (hormone replacement therapy) on motor functions in postmenopausal women. Method: In this meta-analysis, 19 studies that examined changes in motor functions between postmenopausal women with and without HRT intervention were qualified. We additionally conducted moderator variable analyses including: (1) motor function type, (2) hormone type, and (3) duration of HRT intervention. Results: The random effects model showed no significant overall effects (SMD = 0.199; SE = 0.115; 95% CI = -0.026~0.425; Z = 1.730; p = 0.084; I2 = 93.258%). Additional three moderator variable analyses revealed no significant effect sizes indicating that specific HRT protocols did not improve different motor functions in postmenopausal women. Conclusion: These meta-analytic findings suggest that HRT had no positive effects on motor functions in postmenopausal women.

  • As the population ages, the life of women after menopause becomes much longer than the past, and the quality of life of old age becomes increasingly principal issue. There is a period that women experience the physical symptoms of menopause, although there are differences in degree, and the management of this period is a suitable time for women to improve their quality of life. According to the menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) and Timing Hypothesis, which has been proven in the Kronos Early Estrogen Prevention Study (KEEPS) and the Early vs Late Intervention Trial with Estradiol (ELITE) study, a relatively young woman before and after menopause can benefit from long-term beneficial effects such as prevention of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease by early initiation of hormone therapy to alleviate menopausal symptoms. MHT should be considered for all women in healthy (without other important diseases) menopausal years, expecting to improve their quality of life through symptom relief in menopausal women and, in the long term, to prevent cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. When applying hormone therapy to individuals, it is necessary to establish various treatment strategies according to the menopausal symptoms of individual patients (individualization of treatment) and judge the suitability of clinical application.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of the gender role identity and quality of life of women applying hormone replacement therapy with hysterectomy and to identify the relation among these variables. Methods: The subjects were 121 outpatients applying hormone replacement therapy with hysterectomy at a university hospital in Busan province. The data were collected using self-reported questionnaire and medical record, from September to October 2008. Results: There were statistically significant differences in the degree of quality of life according to the age, educational level, occupation, family economic status, Body Mass Index (BMI), menopause state, duration to restarting intercourse from hysterectomy, discomfort from intercourse, satisfaction from intercourse and duration, sources, and formulation of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The femininity identity group occupied the largest proportion (31.4%), and then the masculinity identity group (28.1%), the undifferentiated identity group (26.4%), and finally the androgyny identity group (14.1%). There was a positive correlation between femininity and quality of life (r=.276, p=.002). Conclusion: These results indicate that HRT helps the women's sense of loss caused by hysterectomy to be reduced, the postmenopausal symptom after hysterectomy to be relieved and the quality of life to be improved.

  • Today's mobile phones and tablet PCs offer a considerably wider range of functionalities than before. Mobile applications (apps) are increasingly used for managing various daily health tasks. Currently, more than 165,000 health-related apps are offered on all the stores of different platforms. Pf Jin and the Association for Research on MPS and Rare Diseases (AMARD) have helped Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) families through medical information and family support since 2015. AMARD developed the first mobile application for Korean patients with PWS, which was released to a limited number of patients under the age of 3 and only provided to Android users. The first version of the PWS application focused on growth hormone therapy and the assessment of growth and development by parents in infant and early-childhood PWS patients. The 2016 version of the PWS application has been improved in many different ways. We have expanded the subjects of the application to late childhood and adolescent groups, changed the user interface accordingly, and made the application available for iOS users. We will show the specialized growth curves of older children with PWS. Therefore, patients with PWS over the age of 3 and their parents can assess the patients' growth. Additionally, we have upgraded the growth hormone therapy menu by improving the input system for the growth hormone therapy injection schedule and the daily growth profile (height and weight). We expect that the new version of the PWS application will help many PWS families cope with growth hormone therapy and evaluate the effects of growth hormones in better ways. Additionally, we are making a constant effort to provide more useful information about patients with PWS in many aspects.

  • Purpose: Endocrine therapy is the preferred treatment for hormone receptor (HR)-positive metastatic breast cancer (MBC). We investigated the efficacy of combined aromatase inhibitor (AI) and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonist in premenopausal patients with HR-positive MBC. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 21 HR-positive premenopausal MBC patients treated with combined AI and LHRH agonist therapy. Results: The median follow-up period was 32.9 months. The overall response rate was 47.6%, with three complete responses (14.3%) and seven partial responses (33.3%). Nine patients (42.9%) achieved stable disease lasting more than 6 months; thus, the clinical benefit rate was 90.4%. The median time to progression was 45.4 months. No patients experienced grade 3 or 4 toxicity. Conclusion: Combined AI and LHRH agonist treatment safely and effectively induced remission or prolonged disease stabilization, suggesting that this could be a promising treatment option for HR-positive premenopausal patients with MBC.
