  • Honeycomb panel has a constructive advantage because it is constructed with a honeycomb core, so it has relatively higher strength ratio to weight. Therefore honeycomb panel has been used as the light weight panels in the high-speed railway technology and high-speed ship like as cruise yachts. Also it has been used in the aircraft and aerospace industry as a structural panel because light weight structure is indispensible in that field of industry. Recently, the honeycomb panel is embossed in the viewpoints of high oil prices as the lightweight panel of the transport machine, however the sound insulation capacity of the honeycomb panel is poorer than those of uniform and another sandwich panels. In this paper a method to improving the sound absorption coefficient of a honeycomb panel Is studied by using the Helmholtz resonator. The sound absorption coefficients for some kinds of honeycomb cores are demonstrated by the normal incident absorption coefficient method.

  • The effect of the core cell shape on shock absorption characteristics of biomimetically inspired honeycomb structures has been numerically investigated. The finite element models of honeycomb test specimen composed of five core cells of identical mass have been constructed, and numerical simulations have been run on PAMCRASH. The dimensions of the sides of core cells as well as the angle between the sides have been shown to influence the shock absorption characteristics of the honeycomb structure. The specimen with regular hexagonal core cell shape is found to show the best shock absorbing capacity, and specimen with rectangle-like core cell are found to provide good shock absorbing characteristics.

  • In this paper, a study on low-velocity impact response of honeycomb sandwich panels was done for the changes of impact location and core fabrication angles. The test specimens were made of glass/epoxy laminate facesheet and aluminum honeycomb core. Square samples of 100mm and 100mm sides were subjected under low-velocity impact loading using instrumented testing machine at three energy levels. Impact parameters like maximum force, time to maximum force, deflection at maximum force and absorbed energy were evaluated and compared for the changes of impact location and core fabrication angle. The impact damage size were measured at facesheet surface by 3-Dimensional scanner. Also, sandwich specimens after impact test were cut to analyse the failure mode.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate on the pulsating combustion of a granular coal in a Rijke type pulse combustor. The combustor is made of a 120cm long pipe with a honeycomb as a fire grate in the lower half. A fixed amount of coal is laid on the honeycomb and burned downward after ignition by using propane gas. Then the combustion driven acoustic oscillation occurs and makes the combustion pulsate with a very high amplitude. The effect of the pulsation and the air flow rate on the combustion characteristics is examined in comparison with the normal combustion. The non-pulsating combustion is made possible by placing absorbing material under the honeycomb. The combustion phenomena are observed visually, the burning time is measured in order to evaluate the combustion rate, and the variation of the gas temperatures is recorded. It is found that the fuel particle is greatly agitated like boiling by the flow pulsation and the burning-down velocity is so fast that the fuel is burned almost simultaneously. The combustion rate can be increased as twice as that of non-pulsating combustion with increase of the air flow rate. And the combustion becomes clean with less soot deposit and emission.

  • In this paper, we prove mesh-like networks can be embedded into Petersen-Torus(PT) networks. Once interconnection network G is embedded in H, the parallel algorithm designed in Gcan be applied to interconnection network H. The torus is embedded into PT with dilation 5, link congestion 5 and expansion 1 using one-to-one embedding. The honeycomb mesh is embedded into PT with dilation 5, link congestion 2 and expansion 5/3 using one-to-one embedding. Additional, We derive average dilation. The embedding algorithm could be available in both wormhole routing system and store-and-forward routing system by embedding the generally known Torus and honeycomb mesh networks into PT at 5 or less of dilation and congestion, and the processor throughput could be minimized at simulation through one-to-one.

  • The characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop of several different porous materials which can be used as inserts inside solar volumetric air receivers were experimentally investigated. Generally, porous materials were inserted into solar volumetric air receivers to increase the thermal performance. In the present work, honeycomb (diameter: 100 mm, thickness: 30 mm), laminated mesh (diameter: 100 mm, thickness: 1 mm) are considered as the inserts for the experiment. The experimental apparatus consists mainly of a cylindrical ceramic duct as a receiver and an electric heater as an energy source. This system is an intake open loop, which used as air of working fluid. The temperatures inside the ceramic tube are measured by thermocouples, which are installed at each layer of the porous materials. The pressure-drop experimental apparatus is fabricated alike the above experimental equipment. An acrylic tube is used like as the ceramic tube, which has the same specifications of the ceramic tube. The pressure drop of porous materials inserted in the acrylic tube is measured between front and rear of those by transmitter. The results show that the laminated mesh surpasses the honeycomb of heat transfer and pressure drop increase as the porous material thickness and Reynolds number.

  • Aluminum honeycomb sandwich panel (AHSP) not only have high flexural rigidity and strength per density but also excellence in anti-vibration and anti-noise properties. Their properties are very useful for build airplane and high speed crafts, which need lighter-weighted and more strengthed element. Recently, the AHSP is regarded as a promising strength member of light structures like the hull of high speed crafts. Generally, the core shape of aluminum sandwich panel (ASP) is the hexagonal shape of honeycomb. But, in this paper, authors proposed the ASP with pyramid core, as the ASP model of new type, and analysed the structural and vibrational characteristics for aluminum pyramid sandwich panel (APSP) as this new ASP type, according to the thickness variation of core and face, the height variation of core. The applied sandwich models have isotropic and symmetrical aluminum faces and pyramid cores. And, the applied boundary conditions are simple, fixed and free support.

  • As the operating condition for the penetrating missile has been more advanced, the survivability of main charge has been strongly required when the warhead impacts the target. Lots of efforts to desensitize explosives such as the development of insensitive molecular explosives or optimizing plastic-bonded explosives(PBX) systems has been made to enhance the survivability of main charge. However, these efforts face their limits as the weapon system require higher performance. Herein, we suggest a new strategy to secure the survivability of main charge. We applied structurally supportable aluminum honeycomb(HC) structure to cast PBX. The aluminum HC structure reinforces the mechanical strength of cast PBX and helps it to withstand external pressure without the reaction like detonation. In this study, impact resistance character, shock sensitivity and internal blast performance of PBXs reinforced with HC structure were investigated according to the application of aluminum HC structure. The newly suggested aluminum HC structure applied to cast PBX was proved to be a promising manufacturing method available for high-tech weapon systems.

  • Herein, novel porous structures were fabricated from monomer solutions of dimethylsiloxane and benzene by directional crystallization in twice. First, a honeycomb-like structure was fabricated by $1^{st}$ directional crystallization of solvent. By infiltration of the solution and subsequent $2^{nd}$ directional crystallization, novel structures of different pores in the honeycomb-like structure were fabricated. The porous materials prepared by the repeated directional crystallization have higher indentation modulus and hardness than those of the samples prepared by single directional crystallization. When a higher solution concentration was used in $2^{nd}$ directional crystallization, the maximum increase (indentation modulus: 2140% increase, indentation hardness: 2330% increase) was obtained. On the other hand, porosity and contact angle were lower in the samples from $2^{nd}$ directional crystallization than those from $1^{st}$ directional crystallization. A large decreases was observed, when a relatively high concentration was used in $2^{nd}$ directional crystallization (porosity: 21% decrease, contact angle: 36% decrease).
