  • The nonstoichiometric chalcogenides with NaCl-type structure were prepared and the physical and structural properties were studied. The homogeneous range and the structural change were studied based on X-ray powder diffractions using Rietveld-type full-profile fitting technique. Wide homogeneous ranges were observed in Y-S and Y-Se systems, and relatively narrow homogeneous ranges were observed in Yb-S and Yb-Se systems. Both in $Yb_{1-x}S\;and\;Yb_{1-x}Se$, a vacancy ordering transition occurred in (111) plane direction. The ordered superstructure had cubic symmetry(Fm$\bar{3}m) with doubled unit cell "a" parameter compared to the original NaCl-type. The superlattice developed in a continuous second-order transitiion was characterized by the reduced waved vector k= $(a^*+b^*+c^*)/2$. Y-S system had metallic, and YSe, YbSe system had semiconducting properties in their homogeneous ranges. It was observed that the change of electronic transport properties in extended homogeneous range did not depend on the relativeratio of metal to nonmetal, but on the quantities of vacancies.

  • In this paper, with a graphical approach, a series of stability charts for homogeneous slopes with benches are presented based on the upper bound limit analysis theory and strength reduction technique. The objective function of the slope safety factor $F_s$ is optimized by the nonlinear sequential quadratic programming, and a substantial number of examples are illustrated to use the stability charts for homogeneous slopes with benches driven by only the action of the soil weight. These charts can be applied to quick and accurate estimations of the stability status of homogeneous slopes with benches. Moreover, the failure modes and the formula for safety factor Fs of homogeneous slopes with benches are provided to illustrate the stability analysis of slopes with benches, which is validated by samples.

  • The main aim of this study is to introduce optimal design of homogeneous earth dams with oblique and horizontal drains based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) incorporating weighted least squares support vector machine (WLS-SVM). To achieve this purpose, the upstream and downstream slopes of earth dam, the length of oblique and horizontal drains and angle among the drains are considered as the design variables in the optimization problem of homogeneous earth dams. Furthermore, the seepage through dam body and the weight of dam as objective functions are minimized in the optimization process simultaneously. In the optimization procedure, the stability coefficient of the upstream and downstream slopes and the seepage through dam body as the hydraulic responses of homogeneous earth dam are required. Hence, the hydraulic responses are predicted using WLS-SVM approach. The optimal results of illustrative examples demonstrate the efficiency and computational advantages of PSO with WLS-SVM in the optimal design of homogeneous earth dams with drains.

  • Previous studies on multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) mostly assume a homogeneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), where each user has the same average SNR. However, real networks are more likely to feature heterogeneous SNRs (a random-valued average SNR). Motivated by this fact, we analyze a multiuser MIMO downlink with a zero-forcing (ZF) receiver in a heterogeneous SNR environment. A transmitter with Mantennas constructs M orthonormal beams and performs the SNR-based proportional fairness (S-PF) scheduling where data are transmitted to users each with the highest ratio of the SNR to the average SNR per beam. We develop a new analytical expression for the sum throughput of the multiuser MIMO system. Furthermore, simply modifying the expression provides the sum throughput for important special cases such as homogeneous SNR, max-rate scheduling, or high SNR. From the analysis, we obtain new insights (lemmas): i) S-PF scheduling maximizes the sum throughput in the homogeneous SNR and ii) under high SNR and a large number of users, S-PF scheduling yields the same multiuser diversity for both heterogeneous SNRs and homogeneous SNRs. Numerical simulation shows the interesting result that the sum throughput is not always proportional to M for a small number of users.

  • Embedded processors often accommodate two instruction sets, a standard instruction set and a compressed instruction set. With the compressed instruction set, code size can be reduced while instruction count (and consequently execution time) can be increased. To achieve code size reduction without significant increase of execution time, this paper proposes a new compressed instruction set architecture, called TOE (Two Operations Execution). The proposed instruction set format includes the parallel bit that indicates an instruction can be executed simultaneously with the next instruction. To add the parallel bit, TOE instruction format reduces the destination register field. The reduction of the register field limits the number of registers that are accessible by an instruction. To overcome the limited accessibility of registers, TOE adapts non-homogeneous register partition in which registers are divided into multiple subsets, each of which are accessed by different groups of instructions. With non-homogeneous registers, each instruction can access only a limited number of registers, but an entire program can access all available registers. With efficient non-homogeneous register allocator, all registers can be used in a balanced manner. As a result, the increase of code size due to register spills is negligible. Experimental results show that more than 30% of TOE instructions can be executed in parallel without significant increase of code size when compared to existing Thumb instruction set.

  • Recently, as high-rise buildings increase steeply, sub-structures of them are often supported on in-homogeneous foundation. And there are many machines in sub-structures of buildings, and slabs of sub-structures are affected by vibration which they make. This paper deals with vibration of plates with concentrated masses on in-homogeneous foundation. Machines on plates are considered as concentrated masses. In-homogeneous foundation is considered as assigning $k_{w1}$ and $k_{w2}$ to Winkler foundation parameters of central region and side region of plate respectively, and foundation is idealized to use Pasternak foundation model which considered both of Winkler foundation parameter and shear foundation parameter. In this paper, applying Winkler foundation parameters which $k_{w1}$and $k_{w2}$ are 10, $10^2$, $10^3$ and shear foundation parameter which are 10, 20 respectively, first natural frequencies of thick plates with concentrated masses on in-homogeneous foundations are calculated.

  • Total suspended particulate matters in the ambient air were analyzed for eight chemical elements (Ca, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Si, and Zn) using an x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) at the Kyung Hee University - Suwon Campus during 1989 to 1994. To use these data as basis for source identification study, membership of each sample was selected to represent one of the well defined sample groups. The data sets consisting of 83 objects and 8 variables were initially separated into two groups, fine (d$_{p}$<3.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and coarse particle groups (d$_{p}$>3.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). A hierarchical clustering method was examined to obtain possible member of homogeneous sample classes for each of the two groups by transforming raw data and by applying various distances. A disjoint principal component analysis was then used to define homogeneous sample classes after deleting outliers. Each of five homogeneous sample classes was determined for the fine and the coarse particle group, respectively. The data were properly classified via an application of logarithmic transformation and Euclidean distance concept. After determining homogeneous classes, correlation coefficients among eight chemical variables within all the homogeneous classes for calculated and meteorological variables (temperature. relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and precipitation) were examined as well to intensively interpret environmental factors influencing the characteristics of each class for each group. According to our analysis, we found that each class had its own distinct seasonal pattern that was affected most sensitively by wind direction.ion.

  • In this study, artificial neural network (ANN) and multiple regression (MR) models were developed to predict the critical factor of safety ($F_s$) of the homogeneous finite slopes subjected to earthquake forces. To achieve this, the values of $F_s$ in 5184 nos. of homogeneous finite slopes having different slope, soil and earthquake parameters were calculated by using the Simplified Bishop method and the minimum (critical) $F_s$ for each of the case was determined and used in the development of the ANN and MR models. The results obtained from both the models were compared with those obtained from the calculations. It is found that the ANN model exhibits more reliable predictions than the MR model. Moreover, several performance indices such as the determination coefficient, variance account for, mean absolute error, root mean square error, and the scaled percent error were computed. Also, the receiver operating curves were drawn, and the areas under the curves (AUC) were calculated to assess the prediction capacity of the ANN and MR models developed. The performance level attained in the ANN model shows that the ANN model developed can be used for predicting the critical $F_s$ of the homogeneous finite slopes subjected to earthquake forces.

  • This study has two purposes. First, it aims to suggest an appropriate approach to English writing education for Korean high school students in a cooperative learning situation. It also aims to suggest what type of learner grouping, either homogeneous or heterogeneous, is appropriate by comparing the learners' writing abilities and the changes of their affective factors after being exposed to cooperative EFL writing instruction. Two homogeneous classes were selected and instructed to write in English for 11 weeks. One was composed of homogeneous small groups based on the students' writing scores, and the other was composed of heterogeneous small groups, again based on the students' writing scores. The results showed that the improvement between the two class types was quite different across different proficiency levels. For example, although there is little difference between the homogeneous and the heterogeneous classes of low and intermediate-level learners in writing ability improvement, high-level students showed a significant difference between the classes. In addition, it was found that class participation correlated significantly to writing ability improvement. Cooperative learning was proved to be an effective writing instructional approach to encourage learners' interest and increase their self-confidence; however, the results did not show any significant differences in learners' affective domain between the homogeneous and the heterogeneous classes. Similarly, the learners' grouping preference was not affected by the grouping method.
