  • More accurate inspection method for facilities of nuclear power plants is required to guarantee the continuous and stable energy supply. The portion of inspection for pipes and pressure vessels is relatively big in the power plants. Conventional inspection methods using ultrasonic wave, x-ray and eddy current for nondestructive testing in nuclear power plants have been performed as the method of contact with objects to be inspected. With this reason these methods have been taken relatively much time, money and manpower. And the area to be inspected is limited by the location of probe or film. These difficulties make the inspection into a time-consuming work. We propose an optical defect detection method using phase shifting realtime holographic interferometry. This method has an advantage that the inspection can be performed at a time for relatively wide area illuminated by the laser beam, a coherent light source and can help an inspector recognize not only defects but also the high stressed areas. In this paper we show that the quantitative measurement using holographic interferometry and image processing for defect in pressure vessels is possible.

  • This study investigated the time-dependent dimensional changes of elastomeric impression materials using holographic interferometry. Six commercial impression materials, Permlastic(polysulfide), Xantopren VL (condensation silicone), low and medium viscosity of Exafine, Provil (addition silicone), and Impregum(polyether), were selected. Steel plate was used as custom tray, and each impression specimen was 20 mm in width, 15 mm in length and 3 mm in thickness. Each impression material was evaluated at 30 minutes, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 hours after setting using real-time holography. The results were as follow : 1. Xantopren VL and Permlastic showed relatively severe and continuous dimensional changes after setting. Low viscosity of Exafine, Provil, Impregum showed relatively slight dimensional changes with function of time and medium viscosity of Exafine showed almost no dimensional change from 2 hours after setting to 6 hours. 2. On initial dimensional changes within 1 hour, the amount of change in low viscosity of Exafine was the least and Xantopren VL was the largest. 3. On dimensional changes at 4 hours after setting, the amount of change in medium viscosity of Exafine was the least and tile change of Xantopren VL was the largest. 4. In overall dimensional stability during 12 hours, medium viscosity of Exafine was the most stable and Xantopren VL and Permlastic were least stable.

  • Conventional measurement methods using ultrasonic wave or x-ray, eddy current for non-destructive testing(NDT) in nuclear power plants and other industrial plants have been utilized as the method of contact with objects to be inspected. For this reason these methods require relatively much time and inspection area is limited by the location of probe or film. But holograpic interferometry which is a non-contact optical measurement method using a coherent light source has an advantage that quantative measurement can be performed at a time. In this paper a new method using realtime holographic interfreometry and image processing for detecting internal flaws of pressure vessels is presented.

  • An experimental model is investigated in this paper using the experimental method with a shock tube and the numerical technique. The shock-vortex interaction generated by this model is visualized with various methods: holographic interferometry, shodowgraphy, and numerical computation. In terms of shock dynamics, there are two meaningful physics in the present problem. They are reflective wave from the slip layer at the vortex edge and transmitted shock penetrating the vortex core. The discussion in this study is mainly focused on the two kinds of waves contributing to the quadrupolar pressure distribution around the vortex center during the interaction.
