  • Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have gained attention for applications in quantum dot light emitting diodes (QLEDs) due to their high photoluminescence quantum yield, narrow emission spectra, and tunable bandgap. Nevertheless, non-radiative recombination induced by electron and hole imbalance deteriorates the device efficiency and stability. To overcome the problem, researchers have been trying to enhance hole transport properties of hole transporting layers (HTL) and/or slow down the electron injection in electron transport layer (ETL). Here, we summarize two approaches: i) development of interfacial materials between QD and ETL (or HTL); ii) engineering of HTL by blending or multi-layer approaches.

  • Solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have the advantages of low cost, fast fabrication, and large-area devices. However, most studies on solution-processed OLEDs have mainly focused on solution-processable hole transporting materials or emissive materials. Here, we report fully solution-processed green OLEDs including hole/electron transport layers and emissive layers. The electrical and optical properties of OLEDs based on solution-processed TPBi (2,2',2"-(1,3,5-Benzinetriyl)-tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole)) as the electron transport layer were investigated with respect to the spin speed and the number of layers. The performance of OLEDs with solution-processed TPBi exhibits a power efficiency of 9.4 lm/W. We believe that the solution-processed electron transport layers can contribute to the development of efficient fully solution-processed multilayered OLEDs.

  • We studied the electrical properties of Copper(II)-phthalocyanine (Cu-Pc) as a hole transport layer in organic light emitting devices (OLEDs). OLEDs were constructed with ITO/CU-Pc/triphenyl-diamine (TPD)/tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum ( Alq$_3$) + 4- (Dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM)/Al. It was consisted of a thin DCM in Alq$_3$emission layer. We observed that the change of recombination zone was moved toward the cathode as the hole mobility increased due to the heat-treatment temperature of Cu-Pc layer increased.

  • Electrophosphorescent devices with ionomer-type hole transport layers were investigated. On top of the 3,4-ethylenedioxy thiophene:poly(4-styrene sulfonate) [PEDOT:PSS] structures, fluoropolymer interfacial layers (FPIs) with different side chain lengths were introduced. Both for the PEDOT:PSS/FPI (layered) and PEDOT:PSS (mixed) structures with soluble phosphorescent emitters, the short-side-chain FPIs showed higher efficiency. The difference in the electrical properties of the two FPIs for bipolar (light-emitting) devices was not clear, but the hole-only device clearly showed the favored hole injection at the PEDOT:PSS/FPI structure with a shorter side chain, a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and sulfonyl fluoride vinyl ether.

  • We report on a highly conductive and stable hole transporting layer comprising of N,N'-di(1- naphthyl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine $({\alpha}\;-NPD)$ doped with molybdenum oxide $(MoO_3)$. Compared to the reference device, the device with $MoO_3-doped$ hole transporting material exhibits higher conductivity and thermal stability. The temperature dependence of the current-voltage characteristics are studied for various $(MoO_3)$ doping concentration.

  • The lead-based perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) material has a high molar coefficient, high crystallinity at low temperature, and long range of balanced electron-hole transport length. In addition, PCE of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been dramatically improved by over 22% by amending the electronic quality of perovskite and by using state-of-the-art hole transporting materials (HTMs) such as tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) due to enhanced charge transport toward the electrode via properly aligned energy levels with respect to the perovskite. Replacing the spiro-OMeTAD with new HTMs with the desired properties of appropriate energy levels, high hole mobility in its pristine form, low cost, and easy processable materials is necessary for attaining highly efficient and stable PSCs, which are anticipated to be truly compatible for practical application. Furthermore, Recently Pb-free perovskite materials much attention as an alternative light-harvesting active layer material instead of lead based perovskite in photovoltaic cells. In this work, we demonstrate a Pb-free perovskite material for the light harvesting and emitter as optoelectronic devices.

  • We analysed perovskite $CH_3NH_3PbI_{3-x}Cl_x$ inverted planer structure solar cell with nickel oxide (NiO) and spiroMeOTAD as hole conductors. This structure is free from electron transport layer. The thickness is optimized for NiO and spiro-MeOTAD hole conducting materials and the devices do not exhibit any significant variation for both hole transport materials. The back metal contact work function is varied for NiO hole conductor and observed that Ni and Co metals may be suitable back contacts for efficient carrier dynamics. The solar photovoltaic response showed a linear decrease in efficiency with increasing temperature. The electron affinity and band gap of transparent conducting oxide and NiO layers are varied to understand their impact on conduction and valence band offsets. A range of suitable band gap and electron affinity values are found essential for efficient device performance.

  • The tfTZ(4,4',4''-trifluoro-triazine) was used as a hole blocking material for the electroluminescent devices(ELDs) in this study. In general, the holes are outnumbered the electrons in hole transport and emitting layers because the hole transport is more efficient in most organic ELDs. The hole blocking layer are expected to control the excess holes to increase the recombination of holes and electrons and to decrease current density. The former study using the 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine(TTA) as hole blocking layer showed that the TTA did not form stable films with vapor deposition technique. The tfTZ can generate stable evaporated films, moreover the fluorine group can lower the highest occupied molecular orbital(HOMO) level, which produces the energy barrier for the holes. The tfTZ has high electron affinities according to the data by the Cyclic-Voltammety(CV) method, which is developed for the measurement of HOMO and lowest occupied molecular orbital(LUMO) level of organic thin films. The lowered HOMO level is made the tfTZ to be applied for a hole blocking layer in ELDs. We fabricated multilayer ELDs with a structure of ITO/hole blocking layer(HBL)/hole transporting layer(HTL)/emitting layer/electrode. The hole blocking properties of this devices is confirmed from the lowered current density values compared with that without hole blocking layer.
