Architectural and structural analysis of historical buildings: The case of Kırklareli Museum in Türkiye

  • Traditional immovable cultural assets are significant in terms of societal memory and cultural continuity. Therefore, it is essential to preserve their original qualities without alteration while also assessing their resilience under various influences. This study aims to document the Kırklareli Museum building and conduct a performance analysis for potential earthquake scenarios. To this end, surveys of the structure were conducted, on-site inspections were carried out, and ground and material properties were determined for use in the analysis. The 3D model of the structure was prepared to understand its behavior during earthquakes. The analysis results indicate that there will be no damage to the structure. However, it should be noted that damage could occur in the event of a more severe earthquake than the design earthquake specified by the regulations. This study is significant not only for encompassing the museum structure but also for providing a comprehensive evaluation by determining all material properties.

Deep Reinforcement Learning based Tourism Experience Path Finding

  • In this paper, we introduce a reinforcement learning-based algorithm for personalized tourist path recommendations. The algorithm employs a reinforcement learning agent to explore tourist regions and identify optimal paths that are expected to enhance tourism experiences. The concept of tourism experience is defined through points of interest (POI) located along tourist paths within the tourist area. These metrics are quantified through aggregated evaluation scores derived from reviews submitted by past visitors. In the experimental setup, the foundational learning model used to find tour paths is the Deep Q-Network (DQN). Despite the limited availability of historical tourist behavior data, the agent adeptly learns travel paths by incorporating preference scores of tourist POIs and spatial information of the travel area.

역사 지진 피해 발생 읍성 지역에 대한 부지 고유의 지진 응답 특성 평가 (Evaluation of Site-specific Seismic Response Characteristics at Town Fortress Areas Damaged by Historical Earthquakes)

  • 역사 지진으로 인해 성칩이 붕괴되었던 국내 두 읍성 지역에 대한 국부적 부지 효과를 평가하기 위하여, 현장 시추 조사 및 탄성파 시험을 통해 전단파속도($V_s$) 주상을 포함한 지반 특성을 결정하고 이를 토대로 등가 선형 기법의 부지 응답 해석을 수행하였다. 대상 부지는 심도 30m까지의 평균 전단파속도가 $500{\sim}850m/s$의 분포를 보임에 따라 지반 분류C와 B로 구분되었고, 부지 고유주기는 성벽과 성첩의 고유주기를 포함하는 범위인 $0.06{\sim}0.16$초의 단주기 분포를 보였다. 대상 영역에서의 부지 응답 해석 결과, 지반 분류 B와는 달리 대부분의 부지 조건인 지반 분류 C의 경우 부지 고유 지진 응답 특성인 단주기에서의 큰 증폭으로 인해, 국내 내진 설계 기준의 단주기($0.1{\sim}0.5$초) 증폭계수 $F_a$와 중장주기 ($0.4{\sim}2.0$초) 증폭계수 $F_v$는 각각 지반 운동을 단주기 영역에서는 과소평가하고 중장주기 영역에서는 과대평가함을 확인하였다. 이러한 부지 고유 응답 특성은 단주기 고유 응답을 보이는 성벽 구조물이 지진 발생 시 공진이 발생할 가능성이 높음을 의미하며, 그에 따라 역사 지진 피해 사례인 성첩 붕괴의 지배적인 영향 인자로서 작용했을 것으로 판단된다.

The use of SMA wire dampers to enhance the seismic performance of two historical Islamic minarets

  • This paper represents the final results of a research program sponsored by the European Commission through project WIND-CHIME ($\underline{W}$ide Range Non-$\underline{IN}$trusive $\underline{D}$evices toward $\underline{C}$onservation of $\underline{HI}$storical Monuments in the $\underline{ME}$diterranean Area), in which the possibility of using advanced seismic protection technologies to preserve historical monuments in the Mediterranean area is investigated. In the current research, the dynamic characteristics of two outstanding Mamluk-Style minarets, which similar minarets were reported to experience extensive damage during Dahshur 1992 earthquake, are investigated. The first minaret is the Qusun minaret (1337 A.D, 736 Hijri Date (H.D)) located in El-Suyuti cemetery on the southern side of the Salah El-Din citadel. The minaret is currently separated from the surrounding building and is directly resting on the ground (no vaults underneath). The total height of the minaret is 40.28 meters with a base rectangular shaft of about 5.42 ${\times}$ 5.20 m. The second minaret is the southern minaret of Al-Sultaniya (1340 A.D, 739 H.D). It is located about 30.0 meters from Qusun minaret, and it is now standing alone but it seems that it used to be attached to a huge unidentified structure. The style of the minaret and its size attribute it to the first half of the fourteenth century. The minaret total height is 36.69 meters and has a 4.48 ${\times}$ 4.48 m rectangular base. Field investigations were conducted to obtain: (a) geometrical description of the minarets, (b) material properties of the minarets' stones, and (c) soil conditions at the minarets' location. Ambient vibration tests were performed to determine the modal parameters of the minarets such as natural frequencies and mode shapes. A $1/16^{th}$ scale model of Qusun minaret was constructed at Cairo University Concrete Research Laboratory and tested under free vibration with and without SMA wire dampers. The contribution of SMA wire dampers to the structural damping coefficient was evaluated under different vertical loads and vibration amplitudes. Experimental results were used along with the field investigation data to develop a realistic 3-D finite element model that can be used for seismic risk evaluation of the minarets. Examining the updated finite element models under different seismic excitations indicated the vulnerability of such structures to earthquakes with medium to high a/v ratio. The use of SMA wire dampers was found feasible for reducing the seismic risk for this type of structures.

우리나라 과거 가뭄사상의 정량적 특성 분석 -5대강 유역의 가뭄빈도분석을 중심으로- (Quantitative Characterization of Historical Drought Events in Korea - Focusing on Drought Frequency Analysis in the Five Major Basins -)

  • 본 연구에서는 표준강수지수(SPI)를 이용하여 우리나라의 과거 가뭄사상을 규모적 관점에서 정량적 평가를 실시하였다. 이를 위하여, 5대강 권역에 대한 가뭄사상의 지속기간, 규모, 평균심도를 연속이론을 바탕으로 산정하였다. 또한 과거 가뭄사상의 재현기간을 추정하고 가뭄 평균심도-지속기간-빈도 곡선을 작성하기 위하여 가뭄빈도분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과, 우리나라에 발생했던 심한 가뭄의 재현기간은 대부분 30~50년으로 분석되었으며, 가뭄규모로 평가할 때 가장 가뭄이 심했던 해는 1988년과 1994년으로 나타났다. 특히, 1994년과 1995년에서는 2년 연속 가뭄이 발생하여 가장 극심했던 장기가뭄으로 분석되었다. 또한 2014년의 가뭄은 한강 권역을 중심으로 발생하였으며 가뭄의 규모와 평균심도 면에서 볼 때 우리나라 역사상 가장 극심했던 가뭄으로 평가되었다.

근대적 중앙은행제도로서의 제정 한국은행법: 검토 및 평가 (The Bank of Korea Act Enacted as an Apparatus for Modern Central Banking: A Review and Evaluation)

  • 한국은행법 제정(1950.5.5)과 한국은행 설립(1950.6.12)으로 우리나라 최초의 근대적 중앙은행제도가 도입되었다. 연준 직원 2명(블룸필드 미션: A. Bloomfield와 J. Jensen)이 1949년 9월 방한하여 약 반년 동안 작성한 법률 초안이 제정 한국은행법의 모태였다. 그럼에도, 블룸필드 미션이 기술지원을 수행하게 된 경위나 시대적 맥락에 대한 본격적 분석은 지금껏 거의 없는 것으로 보인다. 연준이사회 직원이던 타마냐(F. Tamagna)가 미국 ECA 대표 자격으로 제시한 제안을 한국정부가 받아들였다는 정도의 사실만 알려져 있을 뿐이다. 이 글은 우선 사료(史料)를 통해 블룸필드 미션의 성립 경위를 재구성하고 당시의 시대적 맥락을 파악하고자 시도한다. 1949~50년은 미·소 대립 속에 전 세계가 냉전으로 치닫던 시기였다. 이 글은 블룸필드 미션이 당시 대한 부흥원조당국이던 주한ECA와 함께 미국 대외정책(냉전정책)의 산물이었다는 점과, 동 미션의 기술지원이 처음부터 주한ECA가 추진하던 경제안정화 프로그램의 일환으로 구상·편제되었다는 점을 새롭게 밝힌다. 당시의 시대적 상황을 여건으로 본다면, 이러한 사실은 블룸필드 미션이 역사적 필연이었음을 시사한다. 다음으로, 이 글은 블룸필드 미션의 법률 초안이 완성되는 과정과 재무부로 제출된 동 초안이 정부 검토를 거쳐 국회로 부의된 후 본회의를 통과하기까지의 과정을 각각 조명한 후 제정 한국은행법의 핵심 내용을 검토한다. 한편, 이 글은 법률적 지속성의 관점에서 현행 한국은행법 조문 대부분에서 제정법이 지금도 살아 숨 쉬고 있음을 확인한다. 끝으로, 양질의 제정법이 나오는 데에 기여한 것으로 보이는 다섯 가지 주된 요인도 논의한다.

경험자료에 의한 동해안의 지진해일 재해도 평가 (Tsunami Hazard Evaluation for the East Coast of Korea by using Empirical Tsunami Data)

  • 본 연구에서는 지진해일에 의한 원자력발전소의 확률론적 안전성 평가를 위하여 필수적으로 도출해야 하는 지진해일 재해도 곡선을 도출하기 위한 연구를 수행하였다. 1900년도 이후에 기록된 동해안에서의 지진해일 기록과 1900년도 이전에 역사지진기록에서 찾을 수 있는 지진해일 기록을 이용하여 지진해일에 의한 최대파고에 대한 재현주기를 산정하고자 하였다. Power law, upper-truncated power law 그리고 지수함수에 의해서 추세선을 작성하였으며 그 결과를 비교하였다. 동해안에서 발생한 지진해일의 기록이 10건 내외에 불과하므로 기록에 의한 지진해일 재해도 곡선추정 연구에 제한이 있으나 국내에는 지진해일의 재해도곡선 추정에 관한 연구가 전무한 현실이므로 지진해일 확률론적 안전성 평가를 위한 초석을 놓은 것으로 판단된다.

Development Of Fashion Cultural Products using Traditional Korean Culture to Enhance Global Competition - Study on Face/Human Images for Digital Textile Printing -

  • The purpose of this study is to develop highly valued fashion cultural items using Korean face and human images to enhance global competition. The methods of this study include: historical study on the face/human images which appear on the dress; design by stage according to Lamb & Kallal's apparel design process; development of products using digital textile printing technology; and case study by objective evaluation through Grant's alpha-beta model. The procedure and the results of this study are as follows: First, in the problem identification stage, the need to develop fashion cultural products of Korean face/human images which are symbolic, aesthetic, and functional was recognized in order to enhance global competition. Second, in the preliminary idea stage, the fashion cultural products and the components that meet the above 3 standards for design were determined and first design was drawn up. The source of the design was extrapolated from face/human images, which appeared on the murals of the ancient Korea, the portraits and custom paintings from the Chosun Dynasty. From these images, a total of 7 design series of T-shirts with an "ULGUL" logo, scarves, and artwalls were developed using "obangsaek" which are five Korean traditional colors including red, blue, black. white, and yellow on cottons and silks. Third, in the design refinement stage, based on the preference survey, more varying design methods were used to develop 25 new designs. Fourth, in prototype development stage, based on the preference survey conducted on fashion professionals and general public from the previous stage, which showed preference for T-shirts and scarves, 3 designs on T-shirts and 2 designs on scarves were printed and produced using the DTP (Digital Textile Printing). Fifth, in the evaluation stage, Grant's alpha-beta model was used to perform comparative evaluation on the symbolic, aesthetic, and functional criteria of the new designs over the existing ones. The new designs received excellent results in all three criteria and a special recognition was given to symbolism of the new designs.

탄소 저장량 감시에서 배수구역과 행정구역의 비교 평가 - 금강산에 대한 UN-REDD 대응 차원에서 - (Comparative Evaluation between Administrative and Watershed Boundary in Carbon Sequestration Monitoring - Towards UN-REDD for Mt. Geum-gang of North Korea -)

  • UN-REDD (United Nations programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) is currently being emerged as one of important mechanism to reduce carbon dioxide in relation to the deforestation. Although administrative boundary has already gained world-wide recognition as a typical method of monitoring unit in the process of GHG (Greenhouse Gas) reduction project, this approach did not provide a realistic evidence in the carbon sequestering monitoring in terms of UN-REDD; the meaningful comparison of land use patterns among watershed boundaries, interpretation for distribution trends of carbon density, calculation of opportunity cost, leakage management, etc. This research proposes a comparative evaluation framework in a more objective and quantitative way for carbon sequestering monitoring between administrative and watershed boundary approaches. Mt. Geumgang of North Korea was selected as a survey objective and an exhaustive and realistic comparison of carbon sequestration between the two approaches was conducted, based on change detection using TM satellite images. It was possible for drainage boundary approach to identify more detailed area-wide patterns of carbon distribution than traditional administrative one, such as estimations of state and trends, including historical trends, of land use / land cover and carbon density in the Mt. Geumgang. The distinctive changing trends in terms of carbon sequestration were specifically identified over the watershed boundary from 4.0% to 34.8% while less than 1% difference was observed in the administrative boundaries, which were resulting in almost 21-22%. It is anticipated that this research output could be used as a valuable reference to support more scientific and objective decision-making in introducing watershed boundary as carbon sequestering monitoring unit.

공간유형별 농촌경관 평가 및 비교 분석 - 전북 고창 선동권역의 주민과 방문객을 대상으로 - (An Evaluation of Rural Landscape and Comparative Analysis in Accordance with Space Types : Focused on Residents and Visitors of Seondong Region, Gochang-Gun, Jeollabuk-Do, Korea)

  • This study has intended to evaluate rural subjective landscape through participation of residents and visitors according to space types, and to perform comparative analysis of evaluation results between residents and visitors. This study has employed a survey method for which 58 residents of 8 villages within Seondong region at Gochang-gun and 70 visitors to Green Barley Field Festival in the target region have participated. 42 landscape view points were selected according to landscape scopes and space types, and then the preference was evaluated using landscape adjectives after showing pictures already taken for each landscape view point. This study has found the following results. First, whereas residents gave high points to natural landscape and artificial one at the historical culture areas in comparison with other landscape scopes, visitors gave them low points on the other hand. Second, visitors evaluated the cultivated area among space types of mixed landscapes with high value. Third, based on t-test for comparative analysis, the statistically significant differences of evaluation results appeared at 6 places among 8 natural landscapes, 3 places among 12 artificial landscapes, and 3 places among mixed landscapes.
