  • The yielding mechanisms of reinforced concrete (RC) structures are the main cause of the collapse of RC buildings during earthquake excitation. Nowadays, the application of earthquake energy dissipation devices, such as viscous dampers (VDs), is being widely considered to protect RC structures which are designed to withstand severe seismic loads. However, the effect of VDs on the formation of plastic hinges and the yielding criteria of RC members has not been investigated extensively, due to the lack of an analytical model and a numerical means to evaluate the seismic response of structures. Therefore, this paper offers a comprehensive investigation of how damper devices influence the yielding mechanisms of RC buildings subjected to seismic excitation. For this purpose, adapting the Newmark method, a finite element algorithm was developed for the nonlinear dynamic analysis of reinforced concrete buildings equipped with VDs that are subjected to earthquake. A special finite element computer program was codified based on the developed algorithm. Finally, a parametric study was conducted for a three-story RC building equipped with supplementary VD devices, performing a nonlinear analysis in order to evaluate its effect on seismic damage and on the response of the structure. The results of this study showed that implementing VDs substantially changes the mechanism and formation of plastic hinges in RC buildings.

  • The seismic performance of rigid steel frames is widely investigated, but that of semi-rigid (SR) steel frames are not studied extensively, especially for near-field earthquakes. In this paper, the performances of five and ten-story steel SR frames having different degrees of semi-rigidity are evaluated at four performance points in the four different deformation states, namely, the elastic, elasto-plastic, plastic, and near collapse states. The performances of the SR frames are measured by the response parameters including the maximum values of the top floor displacement, base shear, inter-story drift ratio, number of plastic hinges, and SRSS of plastic hinge rotations. These response parameters are obtained by the capacity spectrum method (CSM) using pushover analysis. The validity of the response parameters determined by the CSM is evaluated by the results of the nonlinear time history analysis (NLTHA) for both near and far-field earthquakes at different PGA levels, which are consistent with the performance points. Results of the study show that the plastic hinges of SR frame significantly increase in the range of plastic to near-collapse states for both near and far-field earthquakes. The effect of the degree of semi-rigidity is pronounced only at higher degrees of semi-rigidity. The predictions of the CSM are fairly well in comparison to the NLTHA.

  • Evaluation of tunnel performance in seismic-prone areas demands efficient means of estimating performance at different hazard levels. The present study introduces an innovative push-over analysis approach which employs the standard earthquake spectrum to simulate the performance of a tunnel. The numerical simulation has taken into account the lining and surrounding rock to calculate the rock-tunnel interaction subjected to a static push-over displacement regime. Elastic perfectly plastic models for the lining and hardening strain rock medium were used to portray the development of plastic hinges, nonlinear deformation, and performance of the tunnel structure. Separately using a computational algorithm, the non-linear response spectrum was approximated from the average shear strain of the rock model. A NATM tunnel in Turkey was chosen for parametric study. A seismic performance curve and two performance thresholds are introduced that are based on the proposed nonlinear seismic static loading approach and the formation of plastic hinges. The tunnel model was also subjected to a harmonic excitation with a smooth response spectrum and different amplitudes in the fully-dynamic phase to assess the accuracy of the approach. The parametric study investigated the effects of the lining stiffness and capacity and soil stiffness on the seismic performance of the tunnel.

  • As the line width of the pattern become thin more and more, the accuracy of ultra-precision stage should be increased. Various type stages have been developed and used in fabrication phase and inspection lab. Furthermore the line with become several tens of nanometer recently. We need ultra high precision stage. In this paper a new type stage is proposed in order to reduce the deformation of working table. The table is supported by several flexure hinges and actuated by a PZT. The local deformation is analyzed and the vibratory motion is also examined by FEM package.

  • This research is concerned with dynamic modeling of satellite with deployable solar arrays equipped with strain energy hinges (SEH). It is found from experiments that the SEH has nonlinear dynamic characteristics and complex buckling behavior, which is difficult to explain theoretically In this paper, we use an equivalent one dimensional nonlinear torsional spring for the SEH. Lagrangian equations of motion are used for the derivations.

  • This paper present a piezoelectric actuated mirror with PZT cantilevers, torsional bars and hinges for Micro-CCR (corner cube retroreflector). The actuated mirror with low voltage and large tilting angle is designed and simulated by using FEM (Finite Element Method) simulator (CoventorWare). The tilting angle of actuated mirror is 2.93$^{\circ}$ at low voltage of 5V.

  • The equilibrium path of shallow sinusoidal arches supported by hinges at both ends is investigated. The displacement increment method is used to get the solution of the nonlinear differential equations for these structures and to plot the equilibrium paths by the results. Using the equilibrium paths, the relations between the position of buckling point and buckling type for the case of sinusoidal distributed loads are inferred. From the result that the buckling type changes according to the normalized rise of arch, it is also shown that the arch rise is the governing factor to stability regions

  • A reliability analysis model for the frame structure which grafts the discretized ideal plastic method to the stochastic finite element method is introduced. The proposed method simmulates realistically the sequencial occurrence of plastic hinges and yields the probability of failure directly from the geometrical and material properties of a frame structure. The presented method can also take into account the uncertainties inherent in loads and resisten- ces through the stochastic finite element technique. The analysis results are compared with those of the Monte Carlo Simmulation, the Bound Theory, and the fs-unzipping method, and show good agreement.

  • This paper presents a 3-axis fine positioning stage. All the procedure concerning the design and fabrication of the stage are described. The stage considered here is composed of flexure hinges, piezoelectric actuators and their peripherals. A special flexure hinge is adopted to be able to actuate the single stage in three axes at the same time. A ball contact mechanism is introduced into the piezoelectric actuator to avoid the cross talk among the axes. The final design is obtained with the theoretical analysis on the stage. An actual fine stage is developed and the design specifications are verified through an experiment.
