  • Laser scanning technology with high positional accuracy and high density automation will be widely applied in vast range of fields including geomatics. Especially, the development of laser scanning technology enabling long range information extraction is increasing its full use in civil engineering. The purpose of this study is to extract accurate highway geometric information taking the advantages of scanning technology. Fulfilling this goal, the information of target highway's three-dimensional data was obtained through terrestrial laser scanning technology. • It is important for highway maintenance and safety assessment to get the accurate highway geometric information. However, it is difficult to acquire good highway geometric information due to missing blueprints or deteriorated highway sections. This research, to get highway geometric information rapidly, has developed a highway geometric analysis algorithm that uses data from vehicles with GPS-IMU integrated system. In conclusion, the result shows that 3.38% of error-ratio for the horizontal alignment and 0.083 absolute value difference for vertical grade comparing with highway drawings. Therefore, the result suggest that the developed method can be applied to the road safety inspection or road safety audit.

  • It is well known that rumble strips contribute to reduce traffic accidents. The present paper provides the reduction effect of traffic accidents under specific highway geometrics after rumble strip installation. Traffic accidents on freeway sections before and after rumble strip installation are compared when conditions of the highway geometric characteristics such as horizontal, vertical geometrics are given. It is shown that rumble strips are effective under highway geometric conditions of down slopes or right curvatures. It is also shown that rumble strips are still effective with shorter length of installation.

  • The state-of-art knowledge of highway performance analysis model was developed in this research and a computerized process named GUCAM(Geometric-specific User Cost Analysis Model) was established to facilitate the computational procedure. A comparison of GUCAM was made to HIAP program using a case study of widening two-lane rural highway into four-lane rural. The comparison indicated that GUCAM was more realistic and sensitive to the highway geometric features by virtue of the new methodology for the distribution of highway curves and grades. However, the model still remains insensitive to improvements at isolated locations such as specific grades or curves. Further research is required to straighten out this problem.

  • The aim of this study concerns with the construction stage analysis of highway bridges constructed with balanced cantilever method using time dependent material properties. K$\ddot{o}$m$\ddot{u}$rhan Highway Bridge constructed with balanced cantilever method and located on the 51st km of Elazi$\check{g}$-Malatya, Turkey, highway over Firat River is selected as an application. Finite element models of the bridge are modelled using SAP2000 program. Geometric nonlinearity is taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta plus large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength variations and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Elasticity modulus, creep and shrinkage are computed for different stages of the construction process. The structural behaviour of the bridge at different construction stages has been examined. Two different finite element analyses with and without construction stages are carried out and results are compared with each other. As analyses result, variation of internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge deck and column are given with detail. It is seen that construction stage analysis has remarkable effect on the structural behaviour of the bridge.

  • Highway geometric design aims to provide drivers with safe and efficient road conditions. Highway design method of Korea doesn't consider demand characteristics of drivers, vehicles etc. Therefore there is a gap between designer's expectation and user's behavior and it hinders to make safer roads. It is required to develop the geometric design criteria and design method based on driving characteristics to provide safe and flexible design. This study suggested a geometric design method of horizontal curves on rural 4-lane highways based on speed distribution.

  • PURPOSES: Design of approach roads of rest areas in highway has many drawbacks such as geometric design elements. There has been traffic accidents occured in these approach roads of rest areas. Thus, design criteria is required in order to protect accidents from being occurred. In case of Korea, geometric structure design criteria of entry facilities, such as toll-gate, interchange, junction etc was established. However there are no presence in a detailed standards for geometric structure of the rest area which affiliated road facilities. METHODS: In this study, analytic on accidents was carried out in regards to the entry of geometric structure of resting areas by utilizing a sight survey and an investigation research of traffic accidents. The survey was targeting 135 general service areas. Collisions with physical channelization and safety facilities occurred due to speeding, rapid entry, and etc at the entrance nose section. At the entrance connector roads, accidents caused by speeding, negligence, over-operation of handle of drivers were main reason of accidents. Discriminant analysis were conducted about geometric elements to distinguish influencing factors for traffic accidents. the lengths and access angles of the entrance connector roads were regarded as to have the high relation with traffic accidents. RESULTS: After classifying the design section of resting areas' entry as well as derive design elements on each section, a speed measurement by targeting entry of rest areas and car behavior surveys were performed, then each element's minimum standard was derived through the analyses. According to the speeds at the starting/end point of entrance connector road, the range of the junction setting angle of the entrance connector road is defined as $12^{\circ}{\sim}17^{\circ}$ and the connector length model was suggested. CONCLUSIONS: Suggest improvement plans for existing rest areas that can be applied realistically. This should be corresponded to the standards of entry and exit of developed rest areas.

  • PURPOSES : It is desirable for buses to be parallel to the face of the bus shelter at a bus stop. In this way, passengers can safely use the buses without moving into the vehicle area. The study was a review of the current bus bay geometric guidelines, to determine whether they lead buses to stop parallel to the face of the bus shelter by analyzing vehicle trajectory. METHODS : A commercial software program for vehicle trajectory analysis was used under our assumptions about bus dimensions and geometric values. The final position of the bus was analyzed for multiple trajectory simulations, reflecting various geometric alternatives. RESULTS : Within the scope of the study, we concluded that the current design guidelines need to be revised by the design values suggested by the study. CONCLUSIONS : The results of the study suggested alternative design values for bus bay geometry, based on the assumption that buses should be parallel to the face of the bus shelter in order to prevent passengers from moving into the vehicle area.

  • Highway design speed is a very important design element which determines highway design level. When determining highway design speed, one would estimate it utilizing the most likelihood of design speed and vehicle operating speed relationship. Existing operating speed prediction models only include highway geometric characteristics and their impacts on speed, which usually can not consider the impact of highway design speed on surrounding roadway environment and land use pattern. If this happens, excessive highway construction cost and huge environmental impact can occur. In this research project, a new vehicle operating speed prediction model was developed which can reflect the effect of surrounding roadway environment into vehicle speed prediction. The followings are the research findings : Firstly, highway terrain types and land use pattern on national roads were classified and integrated into drivers' visual recognition pattern. This was performed using a data management software. Secondly, the developed highway terrain types and land use pattern were related to vehicle speeds and it was found that there were significant statistical differences among vehicle speed for each different terrain and land use pattern. Thirdly. the General Linear Model analysis was employed to analyze the effects of highway geometric features, terrain types, and land use patterns. For two-lane highway and four-lane highway tested in this research project, it was found that R squares were 0.67 and 0.85, respectively. Additionally an optimal highway design speed range table, based on this research project. was proposed for practical use. This table can be reliably used on South Korean national road design, but discretion is required for applying this table to other types of highways including provincial roads and municipal roads.
