Magnetic particles in a novel, wound-healing ointment were studied using M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy and VSM to estimate the stability of the properties of the magnetic particles. The isomer shifts of $Fe_3O_4(A)$ were found to be 0.49-0.56 mm/s relative to iron metal, this indicates that the iron ions in $Fe_3O_4(A)$ are $Fe^{3+}$. On the other hand, the isomer shifts of $Fe_3O_4(B)$ were found to be 0.91-1.13 mm/s relative to iron metal, this shows that the ion state of $Fe_3O_4(B)$ is a mixed state of $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$. It is noted that this composition, as well as that of the initial pure component in the form of a highly dispersed fraction (${\sim}10\;{\AA}$), differs from the stoichiometric one. It was found that the area ratio of the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer subspectra of $Fe_3O_4(A)$ / $Fe_3O_4(B)$ taken at 87 and 181 K linearly increased in comparison to the initial pure magnetic particles, but the rate of increase of the area ratio at 181 K was about two times that at 87 K. From the magnetic hyperfine field, despite their small size, the particles exhibit no superparamagnetism.

A porous metal-organic framework (MOF), MIL-101, was synthesized in the presence of sulfated zirconia (SZ) to produce acidic SZ/MIL-101 composites for the first time. The composites were characterized with XRD, nitrogen adsorption, FT-IR, scanning electron microscope, chemical analysis and so on. The composites (SZ/MIL-101s) were successfully applied in a liquid-phase esterification for a high yield of ester. This catalytic result of SZ/MIL-101, compared with that of pure SZ or MIL-101 (showing a negligible yield of ester), suggests that the SZ in the composite is highly active in the acid catalysis probably because of the well-dispersed active species of SZ. Moreover, the esterification is catalyzed in heterogeneous mode as confirmed by negligible esterification after filtration of the catalyst. Finally, microwaves can be efficiently applied both in the synthesis of the composites and the esterification reaction to accelerate the two processes of synthesis and esterification by about 5 times.
MALDI-TOF-MS technique was applied to obtain structural and compositional information of synthetic polyamides, Nylon6 and Nylon66. Mass spectra of both the original and the hydrolyzed polyamide samples were analyzed using the self calibration method as well as the internal calibration method with the standard materials of known masses. The MALDI-TOF mass spectra of Nylon6 samples showed the presence of protonated, sodiated, and potassiated ions that were assigned to cyclic and NH2/COOH terminated linear oligomers. From the MALDI-TOF mass spectra of Nylon66 samples, the potassiated linear oligomers with three different end groups are identified as well as the cyclic oligomers, i.e., NH2/COOH terminated oligomers, NH2/NH2 terminated oligomers, and COOH/COOH terminated oligomers. Full characterization of the molecular species and end groups present in the polyamide samples has been achieved, and also the changes in mass spectral patterns after the hydrolysis of the samples are presented.
The sol-gel technique has been studied to fabricate a homogeneous Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst. Ambient effects (air, Ar, and $H_2$) on thermal decomposition of the citrate precursor have been systematically investigated to fabricate an Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst. Severe agglomeration of metal catalyst was observed under thermal decomposition of citrate precursor in air atmosphere. Ar/$H_2$ atmosphere effectively restricted agglomeration of bimetallic catalyst and formation of highly-dispersed Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst with high specific surface-area due to the formation of Fe-Mo nanoclusters within MgO support. High-quality thin-multiwalled carbon nanotubes (t-MWCNTs) with uniform diameters were achieved on a large scale by catalytic decomposition of methane over Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst prepared under Ar-atmosphere. The produced t-MWCNTs had outer diameters in the range of 4-8 nm (average diameter ~6.6 nm) and wall numbers in the range of 4-7 graphenes. The as-synthesized t-MWCNTs showed product yields over 450% relative to the utilized Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst, and indicated a purity of about 85%.

Few-walled carbon nanotubes (FWNTs)-based field emitters with long term stability are fabricated by using a spray method. Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) sol as a binder was mixed with dispersed solution of FWNTs to enhance the adhesion of FWNTs on the cathode substrate. Due to the strong intermolecular interaction of TEOS to the functional groups attached on CNTs and substrate, CNTs are tightly adhered to the cathode electrode when heat treatment is performed at $150^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, resulting in a stable electron emission of CNT emitters for long time. Excellent field emission characteristics were exhibited, with a large field enhancement factor and low turn-on voltage, comparable to those of CNT emitters fabricated by a screen printing of CNT paste. Therefore, FWNTs / TEOS hybrid films could be utilized as an alternative for the efficient and reliable field emitters.

We have developed an efficient method to generate highly active Pd and PdO nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed on graphene and graphene oxide (GO) by an impregnation method combined with thermal treatments in $H_2$ and $O_2$ gas flows, respectively. The Pd NPs supported on graphene (Pd/G) and the PdO NPs supported on GO (PdO/GO) demonstrated excellent carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions under a solvent-free, environmentally-friendly condition. The morphological and chemical structures of PdO/GO and Pd/G were fully characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We found that the remarkable reactivity of the Pd/G and PdO/GO catalysts toward the cross-coupling reaction is attributed to the high degree of dispersion of the Pd and PdO NPs while the oxidative states of Pd and the oxygen functionalities of graphene oxide are not critical for their catalytic performance.

A cloud computing system can be characterized by the provision of resources in the form of services to third parties on a leased, usage-based basis, as well as the private infrastructures maintained and utilized by individual organizations. To attain the desired reliability and energy efficiency in a cloud data center, trade-offs need to be carried out between system performance and power consumption. Resolving these conflicting goals is often the major challenge encountered in the design of optimization strategies for cloud data centers. The work presented in this paper is directed towards the development of an Energy-efficient and Performance-aware Cloud System equipped with strategies for dynamic switching of optimization approach. Moreover, a platform is also provided for the deployment of a Wind Farm CMS (Condition Monitoring System) which allows ubiquitous access. Due to the geographically-dispersed nature of wind farms, the CMS can take advantage of the cloud's highly scalable architecture in order to keep a reliable and efficient operation capable of handling multiple simultaneous users and huge amount of monitoring data. Using the proposed cloud architecture, a Wind Farm CMS is deployed in a virtual platform to monitor and evaluate the aging conditions of the turbine's major components in concurrent, yet isolated working environments.

The reduction of NO by hydrocarbons was investigated over Cu/Al$_2$O$_3$catalysts using a stainless steel flow reactor under highly oxidising diesel exhaust conditions(up to 15%). Three different Cu loadings(1,5 and 10wt.%) on an $Al_2$O$_3$support were prepared and characterized using spectroscopic techniques. The catalytic activity tests show that different Cu loadings as well as temperature, oxygen, and hydrocarbon concentration levels significantly influence the NO reduction. Increasing Cu loadings up to 5 and 10wt.% decreases the catalytic activities for NO reduction due to the formation of a bulk crystalline CuO phase, as observed from XRD and SEM images. In particular, the visualization of the copper dispersion on the surface using the SEM-BEI technique provides information on the extent of copper saturation, particle size, and the effects on NO reduction. However, the lower Cu loading(1 wt.%) increases the catalytic activity with a temperature window of 720-810K, thereby favoring the formation of well dispersed isolated Cu species, e.g. Cu(sup)2+ ions, which is related to selective NO reduction. The effects of other reaction parameters, such as oxygen, the hydrocarbon level and type, and byproduct emissions are further discussed.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) pre-treated by concentrated mixed acid or oxidized at high temperature were melt mixed with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) using a twin screw extruder. The morphologies and electrical properties of the MWNT/PMMA composites were investigated. The thermally treated MWNTs (t-MWNTs) were well dispersed, whereas the acid treated MWNTs (a-MWNTs) were highly entangled, forming large-sized clusters. The resulting electrical properties of the composites were analyzed in terms of the carbon nanotube (CNT) dispersion. The experimental percolation threshold was estimated to be $3 wt\%$ of t-MWNTs, but no percolation occurred at similar concentrations in the a-MWNT composites, due to the poor dispersion in the matrix.
