  • A Non-Evaporable Getter(NEG) pump was fabricated using Zr-V-Fe alloy modules to obtain $10^{-9}$ Pa range pressures. Pumping performances and activation characteristics were investigated and the pumping speeds for hydrogen, deuterium and carbon monoxide gases of the NEG pump were measured. And hydrogen desorption characteristics were examined during activation at $450^{\circ}C$. Futhermore the vacuum performance was compared with those of other high vacuum pumps as turbo-molecular pump, sputter-ion pump, and cryo pump by analyzing the residual gases of the system.

  • Ion pumps continue to be a staple in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) applications. Since their adoption as a primary UHV pump in the 1960's, it has been known that a variety of particles can emanate from within the ion pump and cause undesirable effects on current measurements and optics components. Historically the solution has been baffling and shielding which results in longer conductance paths to the ion pump. Those solutions can work, but require a larger pump and more vacuum plumbing to compensate for conductance losses. The first step was to fully understand the nature of the particles and their charges. Once those were characterized options for emissions reduction were evaluated. It was determined that an efficient design of shielding near the source of the particle generation site was the most cost effective solution. With a slight modification to the chamber of a small ion pump, internal shielding was developed that reduced the emissions by a factor of up to 1000 times.

  • Even if ion pumps are widely and mostly used in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions, virtually every existing ion pump has its maximum pumping speed around 1E-6 mbar (1E-4 Pa). Discharge intensity in the ion pump Penning cell is defined as the current divided by pressure (I/P). This quantity reflects the rate of cathode bombardment by ions, which underlies all of the various pumping mechanisms that occur in ion pumps (chemisorption on sputtered material, ion burial, etc.), and therefore is an indication of pumping speed. A study has been performed to evaluate the influence of magnetic fields and cell dimensions on the ion pump discharge intensity and consequently on the pumping speed at different pressures. As a result, a combination of parameters has been developed in order to design and build an ion pump with the pumping speed peak shifted towards lower pressures. Experimental results with several different test set-ups are presented and a prototype of a new 200 l/s ion pump with the maximum pumping speed in the 1E-8 mbar (1E-6 Pa) is described. A model of the system has also been developed to provide a framework for understanding the experimental observations.

  • Vacuum facility is required for high altitude space environment test to develop satellites or space launch vehicles. We, at Chungnam, National University, developed turbo molecular pump vacuum test facility up to $1.0{\times}10-6$ torr to simulate 200 km altitude environment. In this paper, we present some preliminary vacuum performance test results.

  • Vacuum facility is required for high altitude space environment test to develop small thruster to be applied for micro-satellite. After selecting vacuum equipment and integrating the chamber to simulate 100-120km attitude with max, $10^{-5}\;torr$. We tested the performance of high vacuum chamber. We designed, fabricated the knudsen pump and analyzed pressure gradient efficiency of membrane according to Knudsen number under vacuum conditions. We described the upgrade plan to a thermal vacuum chamber.

  • Effect of design factors on the performance of vacuum system was simulated for optimum design of system. In this investigation, the feasibility of modelling mechanism for $VacSim^{Multi}$ simulator was proposed. Simulation results of pumping design factor showed the possibilities of simulation fore-study for the detailed design factors. Simulation of roughing pump presented the expected pumping behaviors based on the specifications of commercial pump. Application of booster pump exhibited the high pumping efficiency for middle vacuum range. Combinations of optimum backing pump for diffusion and turbo vacuum system were obtained. And, the characteristics of process application of both systems were also acquired.

  • Outgassing from such sources as paints, coatings, adhesives and other non-metallic surfaces can contaminate satellites, especially second surface mirror and optical lens, it cause satellite to fail in own missions. The vacuum bake-out test using high temperature(more than $85 ^{\circ}C$)and high vacuum(less than $5.0{\times}1-^{-3}$ Pa) certify that the components of satellite work properly and can survive and operate in space environment like high vacuum. In the bake-out chamber installed at SITC of KARI, Rotary vacuum pump and Booster pump produce low vacuum of 5.0 Pa, and then two cryopumps produce high vacuum of below $5.0{\times}10^{-3}$ Pa. Also 48 ceramic heaters were provided to simulate high temperature. During the vacuum bake-out test, we detected contaminants using RGA(Residual Gas Analyzer) and measure the outgassing rate of the contaminant using the TQCM(Thermoelectric Quartz Crystal Microbalance). Also, IR/UV Spectrometer and witness plate be used to certify that the components were suitable for the spacecraft. This paper includes the preparation and procedures of the bake-out test for SAR(Solar Array Regulator) and MLI(Multi Layer Insulator), which were the components of the spacecraft. Especially, we discussed the methods and results of the contamination measurement. In the bake-out for SAR, the contamination was measured continuously although it was on the decrease from TQCM results. And RCA established that it is a highly polymerized compound. In the MLI bake-out using RGA and witness plate, we didn't detect any contamination materials.

  • Recently, high vacuum pumps are widely used in the semi-conduction and liquid-crystal display ( LCD ) process. The composite-type high vacuum pumps are widely used in the various processes. In this study, the pumping performance of composite-type molecular pumps has been investigated experimentally. The experimented pumps are a compound molecular pump ( CMP ) and hybrid molecular pump ( HMP ). The CMP consists with helical-type drag pump, at lower part, and with turbomolecular pump ( TMP ), at upper part. The HMP consists with disk-type drag pump, at lower part, and with TMP, at upper part. The experiments are performed in the outlet pressure of $0.2\;{\sim}\;533\;Pa$. We have measured the ultimate pressure, compression ratio, and pumping speed

  • Parametric study has been conducted to calculate the capacity of vacuum pump system that will be used to maintain the pressure of the tube system under atmosphere level. Recently many railroad researchers pay attention to the tube train system as one of the super high speed transportation system. To achieve the ultra super high speed, the inside of tube system should be maintained the low pressure level. In the low pressure environment, it is well known that air resistance of train is drastically decreased. Vacuum pump system will be used to make the low pressure level of tube system, exhaust the leakage air and supplement additional vacuum pumping. Qualitative and quantitative study has been conducted to review the effects of major parameters concerned with the capacity of vacuum pump system. As a results of these studies, we get the lump capacity of vacuum pump for various parameters. These results can be used to analyse the effects of the reduction of air resistance.
