In order to fabricate a highly performing cathode for low-temperature type solid oxide fuel cells working at below $700^{\circ}C$, electrode microstructure control and electrode polarization measurement were performed with an electronic conductor, $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}MnO_3$ (LSM) and a mixed conductor, $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3$(LSCF). For both cathode materials, when $Sm_{0.2}Ce_{0.8}O_2$ (SDC) buffer layer was formed between the cathode and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte, interfacial reaction products were effectively prevented at the high temperature of cathode sintering and the electrode polarization was also reduced. Moreover, cathode polarization was greatly reduced by applying the SDC sol-gel coating on the cathode pore surface, which can increase triple phase boundary from the electrolyte interface to the electrode surface. For the LSCF cathode with the SDC buffer layer and modified by the SDC sol-gel coating on the cathode pore surface, the cathode resistance was as low as 0.11 ${\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ measured at $700^{\circ}C$ in air atmosphere.

In this study, we prepared electrodes containing ionic liquid for high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Effects of ILs on electrochemical properties of the electrodes were investigated carrying out measurement of cyclic voltammograms of the various electrodes with the content of IL in a strong supporting electrolyte. As the ILs content increased in electrodes, electrochemical surface area(ESA) decreased due to the leakage of ILs from Nafion ionomer. In addition, two case of cyclic voltammograms under two simulated environment, i.e. IL leakage from Nafion ionomer in I) electrode and ii) polymer electrolyte, were investigated. As a result, IL leakage from polymer electrolyte showed worse results in electrochemical properties of the electrode.
[ $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{1-x}Mn_xO_3$ ] cathode as a high performance cathode on YSZ electrolyte was studied by analyzing impedance spectra. It was shown that cathode property of $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{1-x}Mn_xO_3$ is bet ter than that of$La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}CoO_3$. At $700^{\circ}C$ in air environment, $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.6}O_3$ cathode on CGO- layered YSZ electrolyte showed very low area specific resistance of $0.14{\Omega}cm^2$, which is low enough for intermediate-temperature sol id oxide fuel cells. This is because material properties of ionic conductivity and thermal expansion compatibility with electrolyte were optimized. Judging from activation energy and oxygen part i al pressure dependance of cathode property, it was noted that oxygen surface exchange kinetics is dominantly influential on cathode property in higher temperature region than $700^{\circ}C$ and oxygen self-diffusion in cathode material is more influential in lower temperature region.
This paper describes the preparation and characterization of two kinds of fluorinated polybenzimidazole (PBI)s which can be potentially used for phosphoric acid-doped, high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Two kinds of perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB)-containing monomers were prepared via following synthetic steps; after fluoroalkylation of methyl 3-(hydroxy) benzoate and methyl 4-(hydroxy) benzoate with 1,2-dibromotetrafluoroethane and subsequent Zn-mediated dehalogenation, these compounds were cyclodimerized at $200^{\circ}C$ affording the ester-terminated monomers containing PFCB ether groups. The synthesized intermediates and monomers were characterized using FT-IR, $^1H-NMR,\;^{19}F-NMR$, and mass spectroscopy. The fluorinated PBIs were then successfully prepared through the solution polycondensation of the monomers and 3,3'-diaminobenzidine in polyphosphoric acid. Compared with traditional PBI, the glass transition temperatures of the fluorinated PBIs were obtained at $262^{\circ}C\;and\;269^{\circ}C$ which are lower than that of PBI and their initial degradation temperatures were still high over $400^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen. The fluorinated PBIs showed higher d-spacing values and improved solubility in several organic solvents as well as phosphoric acid, which confirmed they could be good candidates for the high temperature fuel cell membranes.
In this work, the effects of different sintering inhibitors added to $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}MnO_{3-{\partial}}$ (LSM) were studied to obtain an optimum cathode material for cathode-supported type of Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) in terms of phase stability, mechanical strength, electric conductivity and porosity. Four different sintering inhibitors of $Al_2O_3$, $CeO_2$, NiO and gadolinium doped ceria (GDC) were mixed with LSM powder, sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$ and then they were evaluated. The phase stability, sintering behavior, electrical conductivity, mechanical strength and microstructure were evaluated in order to assess the performance of the mixture powder as cathode support material. It has been found that the addition of $Al_2O_3$ undesirably decreased the electrical conductivity of LSM; other sintering inhibitors, however, showed sufficient levels of electrical conductivity. GDC and NiO addition showed a promising increase in mechanical strength of the LSM material, which is one of the basic requirements in cathode-supported designs of fuel cells. However, NiO showed a high reactivity with LSM during high temperature ($1300^{\circ}C$) sintering. So, this study concluded that GDC is a potential candidate for use as a sintering inhibitor for high temperature sintering of cathode materials.
We developed a novel double dopant bismuth oxide system with Tb and W. When Tb was doped as a single dopant, a Tb dopant concentration more than 20 mol% was required to stabilize bismuth oxides with a high conductivity cubic structure. High temperature XRD analysis of 25 mol% Tb-doped bismuth oxide (25TSB) confirmed that the cubic structure of 25TSB was retained from room temperature to $700^{\circ}C$ with increase in the lattice parameter. On the other hand, we achieved the stabilization of high temperature cubic phase with a total dopant concentration as low as ~12 mol% with 8 mol% Tb and 4 mol% W double dopants (8T4WSB). Moreover, the measured ionic conductivity of 10T5WSB was much higher than 25TSB, thus demonstrating the feasibility of the double dopant strategy to develop stabilized bismuth oxide systems with higher oxygen ion conductivity for the application of SOFC electrolytes at reduced temperature. In addition, we investigated the long-term stability of TSB and TWSB electrolytes.
The fuel cell is one of the green energy receiving a lot of attention. Among the fuel cells, it is generally referred to SOFC(solid oxide fuel cell) which is made up composites of a solid. SOFC has excellent merits in the side of environment and energy. However because of the high operating temperature, it has economic loss by the using of expensive materials and problems of structural instability by thermal stresses. Therefore, this study aims to the effect of analysis by the FEMLAB. The results have deformations and the maximum stresses from the variation of the thickness of vulnerability spots. The deformation shows expansion as 0.82% and the stress ${\sigma}_{xx}$ is 392MPa in electrolyte and -56.31MPa in anode. When increasing or decreasing the thickness to 50% of the reference thickness about the electrolyte which is vulnerable spots.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have been recognized as one of emerging renewable energy sources, due to minimized pollutant production and high efficiency in operation. The performance of SOFCs is largely dependent on the electrode polarization which involves the oxidation/reduction in cathodes and anodes along with the charge transport of ions and electronic carriers. Atomic layer deposition is based on the alternate chemical surface reaction occurring at low temperatures with high uniformity and superior step coverage. Such features can be extended into the coating of metal oxide and/or metal layer onto the porous materials. In particular, the atomic layer deposition is can manipulated in controlling the charge transport in terms of triple phase boundaries, in order to control artificially the electrochemical polarization in electrodes of SOFC. The current work applied atomic layer deposition of metal oxides intro the electrodes of SOFCs. The corresponding effect was monitored in terms of the electrochemical characterization. The roles of atomic layer deposition in solid oxide fuel cells are discussed towards optimized towards long-term durability at intermediate temperature.
