Although a compression splice length does not need to be longer than a tension splice length due to end bearing effect, current design codes impose a longer compression lap splice than a tension lap splice in high strength concrete. Hence, new criteria for the compression lap splice including concrete strength effect need to be found for economical design of ultra-high strength concrete. An experimental study has been conducted using column specimens with concrete strength of 80 and 100 MPa with transverse reinforcement. The test results showed that splice strengths improved when the amount of transverse reinforcement increased. However, end bearing strength did not increase when larger amount of transverse reinforcement is provided within the spliced zone. Therefore, the splice strength enhancement was attributed to the improvement of bond. From regression analysis of 94 test results including specimens made with concrete strength of 40 and 60 MPa, a new design equation is proposed for compression lap splice in the concrete compressive strength ranging from 40 to 100 MPa with transverse reinforcement. By using the proposed equation, the incorrect design equations for lap splice lengths in tension and compression can be corrected. In addition, the equation has a reliability equivalent to those of the specified strengths of materials.
Although the compression splice needs not be longer than the tension slice due to existence of end bearing, current design codes impose a longer compression lap splice than a tension lap splice in high strength concrete. Hence, new criteria for the compression lap splice including the effects of concrete strength need to be sought for economical design involving ultra-high strength concrete. An experimental study has been conducted with column specimens in concrete strength of 80 and 100 MPa. Test results show that the splice strength can be evaluated to be proportional to square root of compressive strength of concrete. Bar stress developed by end bearing is not affected by splice length and is expressed with a function of the square root of concrete strength. Mean value of stresses developed by end bearing is 16.5 square root of $f_{ck}$. The stresses developed by bond in compression splices are nearly identical to those in tension splices and, therefore, strength increment of compression splices is attributed to end bearing only. From regression analysis of 58 tests, a design equation is proposed for compression lap splice in 40 to 100 MPa of compressive strength of concrete. By the proposed equation, the anomaly of lap lengths in tension and compression is got rid of. In addition, the equation has a reliability equivalent to those of the specified strengths of materials.

In this research, the fire resistance of Concrete-Filled Circular Steel Tube Columns (CFT) was evaluated by numerical analysis. As the materials of CFT columns, the steel of SPSR 400 grade and the concrete of 27.5MPa, 37.8MPa strengths were used. Significant parameters, such as concrete strength, axial load, and cross-sectional dimensions were determined. To verify the accuracy of the numerical analysis, the analysis results were compared with the former experiment results. The effect of the fire resistance time, axial load ratio, cross-sectional dimensions and concrete strength was evaluated by comparison with the fire resistance of the square CFT columns. This research showed that the structural behavior and fire resistance from the findings of numerical parametric studies showed a similarity to that of the experimental results. Therefore, this numerical analysis is reasonable in estimating the fire resistance of the circular CFT column.

The aim of this research is to evaluate the fire resistance of concrete-filled steel square tube columns (square CFT columns) under constant axial loads by numerical analysis. The authors examined the experimental results on the fire resistance of concrete-filled steel square tube columns without fire protection. As the materials of CFT columns, steel of SPSR 400 grade and concrete of 27.5MPa and 37.8MPa strengths were used. The significant parameters were determined, such as load ratio, cross-sectional dimensions, and concrete strength. Detailed analytical simulations of fire resistance and axial deformation showed good agreement with the experimental observations. Therefore, this numerical analysis exhibited a reasonable estimation of fire resistance of the square CFT column. Results of the numerical parametric studies showed that the fire resistance of the CFT columns increased with the decrease of the concrete strength and the increase of the cross-sectional dimensions about the constant axial load ratio ($N/N_c$).
In composite materials technology, the fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) have opened up new horizons in infrastructural engineering field for strengthening existing structures and components of structure. The Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets are well suited for RC columns to this application because of their high strength to weight ratio, good fatigue properties and excellent resistance to corrosion. The main focus of present experimental work is to investigate effect of shapes on axial behavior of CFRP wrapped RC columns having same cross-sectional area and slenderness ratio. The CFRP volumetric ratio and percentage of steel are also adopted constant for all the test specimens. A total of 18 RC columns with slenderness ratio four were cast. Nine columns were control and the rest of nine columns were strengthened with one layer of CFRP wrap having 35 mm of corner radius. Columns confined with CFRP wrap were designed using IS: 456:2000 and ACI 440.2R.08 provisions. All the test specimens were loaded for axial compression up to failure and failure pattern for each shaped column was investigated. All the experimental results were compared with analytical values calculated as per the ACI-440.2R-08 code. The test results clearly demonstrated that the axial behavior of CFRP confined RC columns is affected with the change in shapes. The axial deformation is higher in CFRP wrapped RC circular column as compared to square and rectangular columns. Stress-strain behaviour revealed that the yield strength gained from CFRP confinement was significant for circular columns as compare to square and rectangular columns. This behaviour may be credited due to effect of shape on lateral deformation in case of CFRP wrapped circular columns at effective confinement action.

Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) beam-columns are widely used owing to their good performance. They have high strength, ductility, large energy absorption capacity and low costs. Externally stiffened CFST beam-columns are not used widely due to insufficient design equations that consider all parameters affecting their behavior. Therefore, effect of various parameters (global, local slenderness ratio and adding hoop stiffeners) on the behavior of CFST columns is studied. An experimental study that includes twenty seven specimens is conducted to determine the effect of those parameters. Load capacities, vertical deflections, vertical strains and horizontal strains are all recorded for every specimen. Ratio between outer diameter (D) of pipes and thickness (t) is chosen to avoid local buckling according to different limits set by codes for the maximum D/t ratio. The study includes two loading methods on composite sections: steel only and steel with concrete. The case of loading on steel only, occurs in the connection zone, while the other load case occurs in steel beam connecting externally with the steel column wall. Two failure mechanisms of CFST columns are observed: yielding and global buckling. At early loading stages, steel wall in composite specimens dilated more than concrete so no full bond was achieved which weakened strength and stiffness of specimens. Adding stiffeners to the specimens increases the ultimate load by up to 25% due to redistribution of stresses between stiffener and steel column wall. Finally, design equations previously prepared are verified and found to be only applicable for medium and long columns.
As a way of developing wooden joint development, a glass fiber reinforced wood plate was manufactured to replace a steel plate. Also, the fracture toughness was evaluated. Through application to a cantilever-type specimen made of a column and a beam, the moment resistance performance was evaluated. For the fracture toughness specimen of the wood plate, 12 types were manufactured by varying the combination of a main member (veneer and plywood) and reinforcement (glass fiber sheet and glass fiber cloth). The results of the fracture toughness test indicated that the 5% yield load of the specimen using plywood was 18% higher than that of the specimen using veneer, and that the specimen reinforced by inserting glass fiber sheets between testing materials (Type-3-PS) had the highest average 5% yield load 4841 N. Thus, a moment resistance strength test was performed by applying Type-3-PS to a column-beam joint. The results of the test indicated that compared to the specimen using a steel plate and a drift pin (Type-A), the maximum moment ratio of the specimen using a glass fiber reinforced wood plate (Type-3-PS) and a drift pin (Type-B) was 0.79; and that a rupture occurred in the wood plate due to high stiffness of the drift pin. The maximum moment ratio of the specimen using a glass fiber reinforced wood plate (Type-3-PS) and a glass fiber reinforced wooden laminated pin (Type-C) was 0.67, which showed low performance. However, unlike Type-A, a ductile fracture occurred on Type-C, and the load gradually decreased even after the maximum moment.
We previously reported the protein isolated from Coptidis Rhizoma (CRP), which has antifungal activity against a fungal pathogen, Candida albicans. In the current study, we investigated what portion in the CRP is responsible for the antifungal activity. For the investigation, the CRP was fractionated on a Shepadex G-50 column. Data resulting from the fractionation, seven fractions were obtained. Fractions (Fr.) I, II, and III eluted initially from the column showed no inhibitory effect on the growth of C. albicans, whereas Fr. IV, V, and VI eluted later revealed inhibition of the growth, and Fr. IV and VI showed potent antifungal activity by broth susceptibility analysis. However, Fr. VI was contained in the CRP more than Fr. IV, which led us to select the VI for the following experiments. In a murine model of a subcutaneous candidiasis caused by C. albicans, the Fr. VI displayed a therapeutic effect on nude mice pretreated with anti-neutrophil monoclonal antibody (RB68C5) and then infected subcutaneously with live C. albicans. At day 16, these mice were healed almost up to 78% of the infected area when compared to infected area of control nude mice that received diluent (Dulbecco's Phosphate-Buffered Saline; DPBS), instead of the Fr. VI (P<0.01). The Fr. VI blocked hyphal formation from blastoconidial form of C. albicans (P<0.01), which might prevent penetration of hyphae to the deeper site of skin and thus helps the healing. In the ionic strength test, the effect of Fr. was influenced by $Ca^{2+}$ ion just like other known antimicrobial peptides, but the influence was affected at an extremely high concentration such as 500 mM. Thus, such ion-concentration is considered to be meaningless in the clinical situation. Considering all data together, Coptidis Rhizoma is appeared to produce an antimicrobial peptide that has therapeutic effect on subcutaneous infection caused by C. albicans.
This paper presents an experimental study on the behavior of CFT Column to H-Beam Endplate Connections with penetrated H/T bolts under monotonic loading. The object of this study is to estimate accurately the effect about the thickness of endplate and the arrangement of H/T bolts which was not got a grip on the results reported in the previous paper. Main parameters are the thickness of endplates (12mm, 16mm) and the arrangemement of H/T bolts (EP1, EP2, EP3 Type). The experimental results compared and analysed. 1) The specimens were classified by Bjorhovde's and EC3's method. 2) A formula to predict the ultimate moment of connection was derived based on the T-stub model, and theoretical value $(_tM_u)$ computed by the formula corresponded to the experimental value $(_eM_u)$.
The transfer slab system is a structural system that transfers the loads from the upper shear wall structure to the lower columns. This is a costly system due to a very thick slab, and the relatively high cost can be mitigated by introducing voids in the slab. However, this system of flat plate containing voids is vulnerable to brittle failure caused by punching shear in vicinity of slab-column connection. Thus, the punching shear capacity of the void system is very important. However, the current code doesn't provide a clear design provision for the strength of slabs with a void section. In this study, experimental study was conducted to investigate the punching shear strength of the void slab system. The shear strength of the specimens was predicted by current code and previous researches. In result, the punching shear strength of the void system is determined as the least value calculated at critical section located a distance d/2 from the face of the column and the center of the void section using the effective area at critical section.
