  • A T-stub connection with high-strength bolts under tensile force is affected by prying action force and the contact force, among others, between members. If a design equation that does not consider such prying action force and contact force between members is not proposed, the T-stub under tensile force is liable to be fractured under the strength lower than the estimated design strength. To prevent it, many studies have proposed contact force estimation equations between members as well as the prying action force of the T-stub connection with high-strength bolts. However, no design equations based on such research have been proposed in South Korea. Therefore, this study aims to propose an estimation model for more accurate prying action force and contact force, and improve on previously proposed estimation models by implementing the three-dimensional, nonlinear finite element analysis. Throughout the results of three-dimensional, nonlinear finite element analysis, the prediction model proposed in this research for the prying action force and contact force of a T-stub provided much more accurate estimation than that of a existing prediction model previously suggested.

  • Because the torque control method, which is also caled the clamping method in domestic construction sites, is affected by a variation of the torque coefficient, quality control of the torque coefficient is essential. This study was focused to evaluate the effects of several environmental factors and errors when installing bolts while tightening high-strength bolts. Conditioning environmental parameters include wet, rusty and exposure-to-air-only conditions. In addition, because of errors in workability such as instalation of two washers, upset washers are selected. During the tests, torque, torque coefficient, tension and angle of nut rotation were obtained using a bolt testing machine. Test specimens of four types of bolts (High-Strength Hexagon bolt on KS B 1010, Torque Shear Bolt on KS B 2819, High-Strength Hexagon bolt coated with zinc, and ASTM 490 bolt) were recomended. Based on test results, the tightening characteristics subjected to environmental parameters were investigated and compared with the results in normal condition.

  • A slip critical joint has various values to adopt the proper slip coefficient in various conditions of faying surfaces in the following codes: AISC, AIJ and Eurocode 3. However, the Korean Building Code still regulates the unique slip coefficient, 0.45, regardless of the diverse faying conditions. In this study, the slip resistance test, including five kinds of surface treatments were conducted to obtain the proper slip coefficients available to steel plate KS SM490A. The faying surfaces were comprised of a clean mill, rust, red lead paint, zinc primer, and shot blast treatment. The candidates for high strength bolts were torque-shear bolts, torque-shear bolts with zinc coating, and ASTM A490 bolts. Based on the test results, the specimens with a shot blasted surface and rusted surface exhibited $k_s$, 0.61, and 0.5, respectively. It is recommended that the specimens with zinc primer exhibit $k_s{\geq}0.40$. The clean mill treated surface had prominently lower values, 0.27. For red lead painted treatment, the thickness of the coating affects the determinant of slip coefficient, so it is necessary to establish a minimum $k_s$ of 0.2, with a coating thickness of 65 ${\mu}m$. During 1,000 hours of relaxation, the uncoated surfaces exhibited the loss of clamping force behind 3%, while the coated surfaces within a certain limited thickness exhibited the loss of clamping within a range of 4.71% and 8.37%.

  • The initial clamping forces of high strength bolts subjected to different faying surface conditions drop within 500 hours regardless of loading, any other external force or loosening of the nut. This study develops a mathematical model for relaxation confined to creep on a coated faying surface after initial clamping. The quantitative model for estimating relaxation was derived from a regression analysis for the relation between the creep strain of the coated surface and the elapsed time for 744 hours. This study establishes an expected model for estimating the relaxation of bolted joints with diverse coated surfaces. The candidate bolts are dacro-coated tension control bolts, ASTM A490 bolt, and plain tension control bolts. The test parameters were coating thickness, species of coating. As for 96, 128, 168, and $226{\mu}m$ thick inorganic zinc, when the coating thickness was increased, relaxation after the initial clamping rose to a much higher range from 10% to 18% due to creep of the coating. The amount of relaxation up to 7 days exceeded 85% of the entire relaxation. From this result, the equation for creep strain can be derived from a statistical regression analysis. Based on the acquired creep behavior, it is expected that the clamping force reflecting relaxation after the elapse of constant time can be calculated from the initial clamping force. The manufacturer's recommendation of inorganic zinc on faying surface as $75{\mu}m$, appears to be reasonable.

  • The torque-coefficient of torque-shear type high-strength bolts is affected by the environmental factors, such as 'wet', 'rust', 'exposure to air' and workability during tightening high strength bolts. It is difficult to assume the direct tension induced into the bolt due to variation of torque-coefficient for torque-shear type high-strength bolts. Therefore, it is essential to measure tension loads of bolts and to verify the clamping force under construction. In this study, the manufacture of trial product was planned to identify the induced force into the bolts. The algorithm for a trial product was composed of the relation between electricity energy taken from torque shear wrench and tension force from hydraulic tension meter. The regression analysis equation to measure the direct tension was derived by statistical analysis using Minitab program. It is considered that the trial product is reliable tool to evaluate the tension force comparable to a commercial torque wrench.

  • It has been reported that the length parameter of high strength bolts results in the variance in tensile loads. The required turn of nut for each length is specified in AISC RCSC specification. There is no specific regulation datum about the bolt length in the two national codes and specifications in Korea. Therefore this study focused on evaluating influence of the clamping torque subjected to length parameter of high strength bolts. Two types of high strength bolt specimens were manufactured and tested; High Strength Hexagon bolt specified in ASTM A490 and Torque Shear Bolt in KS B 2819. The length parameter ranged from 60mm(3d) to 140mm(7d). The torque, turn of nut, and the clamping force were analyzed to review whether length parameter affects on the required tensile strength. To evaluate the effects of the length parameter on the torque and turn of nut for the required strength and clamping force, statistical analysis was also carried out.

  • Relaxation of high strength bolts was investigated. Block type and splice type specimens were fabricated with different types of bolts and different clamping lengths. Bolts were tightened to the specified torque. Clamping forces were measured through strain gauges installed on the shafts of bolts, while specimens were kept in a constant temperature and humidity. In all cases, ratio of clamping force reduction is less than 10%. Test results of different types of specimens and bolts and different clamping lengths were compared each other by using a simple model, which is suggested in this study for the estimation of bolt relaxation. The suggested model shows reasonably good agreements with test results for all cases. No difference is found between F13T and F10T bolts, but Dacro coated bolts shows higher relaxation than black bolts by approx. 30%. And also the comparison of test results shows that ratios of bolt relaxation become larger as clamping lengths of bolt shorter and the number of faying surfaces greater.

  • Torque control method and turn of nut method are specified as clamping method of high strength bolts in the steel construction specifications. Quality control of torque coefficient is essential activity because torque control method, which is presently adopted as clamping method in domestic construction sites, is affected by variation of torque coefficient. The clamping of torque shear bolt is based on KS B 2819. It was misunderstood that the tension force of the TS bolt was induced generally at the break of pin-tail specified. However, the clamping forces on slip critical connections do not often meet the intended tension, as it considerably varies due to torque coefficient dependent on the environmental factors and temperature variables despite the break of the pin tail. This study was focused to evaluate the effect of environmental factors and errors of installing bolts during tightening high strength bolts. The environmental parameters were composed of 'wet' condition, 'rust' condition, 'only exposure to air' condition. And the manufacture of trial product was planned to identify the induced force into the bolts. The algorithm for a trial product was composed of the relation between electricity energy taken from torque shear wrench and tension force from hydraulic tension meter.

  • This study experimentally investigates the flexural behavior of steel-UHPC composite slabs composed of an innovative negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) steel plate and Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) slab connected via demountable high-strength bolt shear connectors. Eight demountable composite slab specimens were fabricated and tested under traditional four-point bending method. The effects of loading histories (positive and negative bending moment), types of steel plate (NPR steel plate and Q355 steel plate) and spacings of high-strength bolts (150 mm, 200 mm and 250 mm) on the flexural behavior of demountable composite slab, including failure mode, load-deflection curve, interface relative slip, crack width and sectional strain distribution, were evaluated. The results revealed that under positive bending moment, the failure mode of composite slabs employing NPR steel plate was distinct from that with Q355 steel plate, which exhibited that part of high-strength bolts was cut off, part of pre-embedded padded extension nuts was pulled out, and UHPC collapsed due to instantaneous instability and etc. Besides, under the same spacing of high-strength bolts, NPR steel plate availably delayed and restrained the relative slip between steel plate and UHPC plate, thus significantly enhanced the cooperative deformation capacity, flexural stiffness and load capacity for composite slabs further. While under negative bending moment, NPR steel plate effectively improved the flexural capacity and deformation characteristics of composite slabs, but it has no obvious effect on the initial flexural stiffness of composite slabs. Meanwhile, the excellent crack-width control ability for UHPC endowed composite members with better durability. Furthermore, according to the sectional strain distribution analysis, due to the negative Poisson's ratio effect and high yield strength of NPR steel plate, the tensile strain between NPR steel plate and UHPC layer held strain compatibility during the whole loading process, and the magnitude of upward movement for sectional plastic neutral axis could be ignored with the increase of positive bending moment.

  • Fracture behaviors of SCM435 high strength bolt have been studied including macroscopic and microscopic fracture observation, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, Vickers hardness test and applied stress evaluation. cracks (ratchet marks) were generated by the repetitive loads acting on the bolts, initial stress of bolt and the stress concentration. The applied stress was found to be slightly higher than the fatigue limit of the material. The initial stress of bolt must be removed, and the mold temperature during the process must be maintained by room temperature. Bolts are recommended to be peened to improve fatigue limit.
