The small turbocharger for the automotive application is designed to operate up to 200,000 rpm to increase system efficiency. Because of high rotation speed of turbocharger, floating ring bearing are widely adopted due to its low friction loss and high rotordynamic stability. This paper presents a linear and nonlinear analysis model for a turbocharger rotor supported by a semi-floating ring bearing. The rotordynamic model for the turbocharger rotor was constructed based on the finite element method and fluid film forces were calculated based on the infinitely short bearing assumption. In linear analysis, we considered fluid film force as stiffness and damping element and in nonlinear analysis, the fluid film force was calculated by solving the time dependent Reynolds equation. We verified the developed theoretical model by comparing to modal test results of test rotors. The analysis results show that there are two unstable modes, which are conical and cylindrical modes. These unstable modes appear as sub-synchronous vibrations in nonlinear analysis. In nonlinear analysis, frequency jump phenomenon demonstrated when vibration mode is changed from conical mode to cylindrical one. This jump phenomenon was also demonstrated in the test. However, the natural frequency measured in the test differs from those obtained using nonlinear analysis.

An analytical method has been developed for the rapid determination of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in human serum samples. The extraction and purification of PFCs from human serum were performed by the modified method of previous report. Ten PFCs were rapidly separated within 3.3 min by C18-monolithic column liquid chromatography (LC) and detected by electrospray ionization (ESI) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) in negative ion mode. The runtime of PFCs on monolithic column LC was up to 4-fold faster than that on conventional column LC. The effect of triethylamine (TEA) to the mobile phase has investigated on the overall MS detection sensitivity of PFCs in ESI ionization. Quantification was performed by LC-MS/MS in multiple-ion reaction monitoring (MRM) mode, using $^{13}C$-labeled internal standards. Method validation was performed to determine recovery, linearity, precision, and limits of quantification, followed by, the analysis of a standard reference material (SRM 1957 from NIST). The overall recoveries ranged between 81.5 and 106.3% with RSDs of 3.4 to 16.2% for the entire procedure. The calibration range extended from 0.33 to 50 $ng\;mL^{-1}$, with a correlation coefficient ($R^2$) greater than 0.995 and the limits of quantification with 0.08 to 0.46 $ng\;mL^{-1}$. This approach can be used for rapid and sensitive quantitative analysis of 10 PFCs in human serum with high performance and accuracy.

The accurate prediction of dynamic characteristics of high speed rotors, such as gas turbines, is important to avoid the possibility of operating the machinery near the critical speeds or unstable speed regions. However, the dynamic analysis methods and softwares for gas turbines have been developed in the process of producing many gas turbines by manufacturers and most of them have seldom been disclosed to the public. Recently, commercial FEM softwares, such as SAMCEF, ANSYS and NASTRAN, started supporting some rotordynamics analysis modules based on 3-D finite elements. In this paper, the dynamic analysis method using commercial S/W, especially ANSYS, is attempted for the small-size gas turbine engine rotor, and the analysis capability and limitations of its rotordyamics module are evaluated for further improvement of the module. As the preliminary procedure, the rotordyamic analysis capability of ANSYS was tested and evaluated with the reference models of the well-known dynamics. The limitations in application of the rotordynamics module were then identified. Under the current capability and limitations of ANSYS, it is shown that Lee diagram, a new frequency-speed diagram enhanced with the concept of $H{\infty}$ in rotating machinery, can be indirectly obtained from FRFs computed from harmonic response analysis of ANSYS. Finally, it is demonstrated based on the modeling and analysis method developed in the process of the S/W verification that the conventional Campbell diagram, Lee diagram, mode shapes and critical speeds of the small-size gas turbine engine rotor can be computed using the ANSYS rotordynamics module.

A rotordynamic analysis was performed with a dry vacuum pump, which is a major equipment in modern semiconductor and LCD manufacturing processes. The system is composed of screw rotors, lobes picking air, helical gears, driving motor, and support rolling element hearings of rotors and motor. The driving motor-screw rotor system has a rated speed of 6,300rpm, and was modeled utilizing a rotordynamic FE method for analysis, which was verified through the results of its 3-D finite element model. As loadings on the bearings due to the gear action were significant in the system considered, each resultant bearing load was calculated determinately and indeterminately by considering the generalized forces of the gear action as veil as the rotor itself. Each resultant hearing loading was used in calculating each stiffness of rolling element bearings. Design goals are to achieve wide separation margins of critical speeds and favorable unbalance responses of the rotor in the operating range. Then, a complex rotordynamic analysis of the system was carried out to evaluate its forward synchronous critical speeds, whirl natural frequencies and mode shapes, and unbalance responses under various unbalance locations. Results show that the entire system is well designed in the operating range. In addition, the procedure of rotordynamic analysis for dry vacuum pump rotor-bearing system was proposed and established.

In the Part I has been reported a rotordynamic analysis of the driving motor-bull gear rotor-bearing system of a turbo-chiller. In this study, Part II, a rotordynamic analysis is performed with the turbo-chiller compressor pinion-impeller rotor system supported on two fluid film bearings. The pinion-impeller rotor system is driven to a rated speed of 14,600 rpm through a speed-increasing pinion-bull gear. It is modeled utilizing the finite element method for analysis. As loadings on the bearings due to the gear action are significant in the system considered, each resultant bearing load is calculated statically by considering the generalized forces of the gear action as well as the rotor itself. The two support bearings, the generalized forces of the gear action as well as the rotor itself. The two support bearings, partial and 3-axial groove bearings, are designed to take their varying loads along with their varying load angles, and they are also analyzed to give their rotordynamic coefficients. Then, a complex rotordynamic analysis of the compressor pinion-impeller rotor-bearing system is carried out to evaluate its stability, whirl natural frequencies and mode shapes, and unbalance responses under various loading conditions. Results show that the bearings and entire rotor system are well designed regardless of operating conditions, i.e., loads and operating speeds.

To determine the performance characteristics of motorcycle engine using biogas for practical use, the intake system of a 110 cc motorcycle engine is properly modified to operate with biogas as a fuel. Biogas is a potentially renewable fuel for replacing gasoline in future, but it has high percentage of $CO_2$ that could lead to slow the burning rate of biogas-air mixture and cause instability in combustion. Thus, the performance characteristics of biogas-fueled motorcycle engines could be different from those of gasoline motorcycle engines. In this paper, the important parameters of performance characteristics (such as: power output, thermal efficiency, fuel consumption, exhaust emission,${\cdots}$) of biogas-fueled motorcycle engine are studied and estimated with change of engine speed and load. The obtained results when operating with biogas are used to compare with that of gasoline fuel under the same operating conditions. Engine speed in the experimental is changed from 1500 rpm (idle-mode) up to 3500 rpm by a step of 500 rpm. Engine load is changed from zero to maximum load with the help of an exciting voltage device from generator-type dynamometer. The experimental results show that the tested engine operated with richer biogas-air mixture than that of gasoline-air mixture under the same test conditions. Biogas-fueled engine gives a higher fuel consumption and lower thermal efficiency under the same power output. Brake thermal efficiency of biogas engine is found to be about 3% lower than gasoline-fueled motorcycle engine for whole range of speed. Exhaust emission of biogas-fueled motorcycle engine (such as: CO, HC) is found to be lower than the limitation level of the emission standards of Vietnam for motorcycle engines (CO <4.5% HC <1200 ppm).

A numerical method is presented to predict and analyze the shape of a growing billet produced from the "spray forming process" which is a fairly new near-net shape manufacturing process. It is important to understand the mechanism of billet growing because one can obtain a billet with the desired final shape without secondary operations by accurate control of the billet shape, and it can also serve as a base for heat transfer and deformation analysis. The shape of a growing billet is determined by the flow rate of the alloy melt, the mode of nozzle scanning which is due to cam profile, the initial positio of the spray nozzle, scanning angle, and the withdrawal speed of the substrate. In the present study, a theoretical model is first established to predict the shape of the billet and next the effects of the most dominent processing conditions, such as withdrawal speed of the substrate and the cam profile, on the shape of the growing billet are studied. Process conditions are obtained to produce a billet with uniform diameter and flat top surface, and an ASP30 high speed steel billet is manufactured using the same process conditions established from the simulation.imulation.
Dynamic instability of rotating disks is the most significant factor to limit its rotating speed. Application of composite materials to rotating disks may enhance the dynamic stability leading to a possible design of rotating disks with lightweight and high speed. Whereas much work has been done on the effect of transverse shear and rotary inertia, called Timoshenko effect, on the dynamic behavior of plates, there is little work on the correlation between the effect and the rotation of disk, especially nothing in case of composite disks. The dynamic equations of a rotating composite disk are formulated with the Timoshenko effect and the vibrational analysis is performed by using a commercial package MSC/NASTRAN. According to the results, the Timoshenko effect goes seesaw in some modes, unlike the well-known fact that the effect decreases as the rotating speed increases. And it can be concluded, based only on the present results, that decrement of the Timoshenko effect by disk rotation grows larger as the thickness ratio decreases, the diameter ratio increases, the modulus ratio increases, and the mode number increases.
