  • M-mode imaging of the in vivo murine myocardium using optical coherence tomography (OCT) is described. Application of conventional techniques (e.g. MRI, Ultrasound imaging) for imaging the murine myocardium is problematic because the wall thickness is less than 1.5 mm (20 g mouse), and the heart rate can be as high as six hundred beats per minute. To acquire a real-time image of the murine myocardium, OCT can provide sufficient spatial resolution ($10{\mu}m$) and imaging speed (1000 A-scans/s). Strong light scattering by blood in the heart causes significant light attenuation, which makes delineation of the endocardium-chamber boundary problematic. To measure the thickness change of the myocardium during one heart beat cycle, a myocardium edge detection algorithm is developed and demonstrated.

  • We investigate characteristics of gold and silver metal strip waveguides based on long range surface plasmon polaritons (LRSPPs) along thin metal strips embedded in a polymer for practical applications at the wavelengths of 1.31 and 1.55 um. Guiding properties of the metal strip waveguides are theoretically and experimentally evaluated. In addition, surrounding technologies such as the development of TM-mode laser, coupling properties, as well as high-speed digital signal transporting experiments will be explained for board-to-board optical interconnections by using the LRSPP waveguides.

  • Experiment on the modal balancing of a flexible rotor supported on two kinds of fluid film bearings is performed to verify the modal balancing theory. The fluid film bearings are a tilting pad bearing and a two axial grooved journal bearing. One is inherently stable, but the other is not. The experimental result shows that the modal balancing method is effective for balancing of a high speed flexible rotor system. Besides, the critical speeds and mode shapes measured experimentally are in good coincidence with the results of rotordynamic analysis. Oil whip, which is the instability phenomenon due to fluid film force, is also observed during the experiment.

  • A new high-performance liquid chromatographic method with column switching has been onto a Bondapak phenyl/corsil $(37-50{\;}{\mu}m)$ precolumn and polar plasma components were washed with 0.06 M borate burffer. After valve switching, the concentrated drug were eluted in the back-flush mode and separated on a ${\mu}-Bondapak$ C18 column with acetonitrilke-phosphate buffer as the mobile phae. The method showed excellent precision, accuracy and speed with detection limit of $0.01{\;}{\mug}/ml^{-1}$. Total analysis time per smaple was less than 20 min and the coefficients of variation for intra and inter-assay were less than 5.635. This method has been successfully applied to plasma smaples from eats after oral administration of omeprazole.

  • The Korean high speed railroad is scheduled to open in 2004. For railroad-based integrated transfer system, it is essential to develop the intermodal information system for easy transfer to other travel modes. The understanding of mode choices by KTX passengers is crucial for the intermodal transportation planning. Recent development of Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS) made it possible for railroad users to access the transportation information in a cabin or waiting areas at the station. Development of intermodal transportation information system will influence the relative demand for traveling by train from competing other transportation modes. The research is focused on a general overview of the ITS with an emphasis on intermodal transportation information system.

  • For detection of digitally modulated signals, the receiver must be provide with accurate carrier phase and symbol timing estimates. So far, tots of algorithms have been suggested for those purposes. In general, a interpolation filter with TED(Timing Error Detection) like Gardner algorithm is popularly used for symbol timing estimate of digital communication receiver. Apart from the performance point of view, a multiplicative operation of any interpolation filter limits the symbol rate of the system. Hence, we suggest a new symbol timing estimate algorithm for high speed burst-mode fixed wireless communication system and analyze its performance in the AWGN channel.

  • By combining a digital DLL and an analog DLL in 2-stage, an improved DLL is implemented in this paper. The proposed DLL is composed of a RDLL (Register Controlled DLL) and a conventional analog DLL. The phase comparator used in the DLL is built with sense-amp based D flip-flops for high speed operation. The proposed DLL circuits have been designed, simulated in 0.18um, 1.8V TSMC CMOS library. The implemented DLL have demonstrated the fast lock-on time of 1us and low jitter of 72ps.

  • Confluence buffers and single flux quantum (SFQ) switches are essential components in constructing a high speed superconductive Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU). In this work, we developed a SFQ confluence buffer and an SFQ switch. It is very important to optimize the circuit parameters of a confluence buffer and an SFQ switch to implement them into an ALU. The confluence buffer that we are currently using has a small bias margin of $\pm$11%. By optimizing it with a Josephson circuit simulator, we improved the design of confluence buffer. Our simulation study showed that we improved bias global margin of 10% more than the existent confluence buffer. In simulations, the minimal bias margin was $\pm$33%. We also designed, fabricated, and tested an SFQ switch operating in a DC mode. The mask layout used to fabricate the SFQ switch was obtained after circuit optimization. The test results of our SFQ switch showed that it operated correctly and had a reasonably wide margin of $\pm$15%.

  • This paper describes the effectiveness of laser pulse shaping in eliminating weld defects such as porosity, cracks and undercuts in pulsed Nd:YAG Laser welding. A large porosity was formed in a keyhole mode of deep penetration weld metal of any stainless steel. Solidification cracks were present in Type 303 with about 0.3%s. The conditions for the formation of porosity were determined in further detail in Type 316. With the objectives of obtaining a fundamental knowledge of formation and prevention of weld defects, the fusion and solidification behavior of a molten puddle was observed during laser spot welding of Type 310S. through high speed video photographing technique. It was deduced that cellular dendrite tips grew rapidly from the bottom to the surface, and consequently residual liquid remained at the grain boundaries in wide regions and enhanced the solidification cracking susceptibility. Several laser pulse shapes were investigated and optimum pulse shapes were proposed for the reduction and prevention of porosity and solidification cracking.

  • This paper provides an overview of Pakistan Railways scheduling and rescheduling. First of all, Pakistan Railways is introduced with its brief history and importance in this country. Assets of this network with passengers and freight using this are given. Current hope less situation is leading to privatization of this system as well as promoting short distance traveler to use road and Government efforts to retain is also presented. Train scheduling in Pakistan is being done manually, based on manual time distance graph preparation and resolution of conflicts based on manager's experience and ability. In Real-time management of this traffic Lahore head office is connected with six control stations in the Pakistan, decision for resolution of any disturbance is coordinated among them. It is recommended that computer aided tools must be developed for this system to help traffic managers and it is needed to invest on the segments to increase their speed limits which might attract passengers to use this mode of transportation with high priority.
